Dangers ahead, unimaginable mess and new euphemism

988

I’m still meeting people who haven’t noticed.  Hibernian are on an outstanding run of form, having won their last three games and undefeated in six.  The last reversal they had was at Celtic Park the first weekend in April.  On Sunday we’re playing the team with the best recent form in Scotland; the warning signs are painted in large green font.

They are dangerous up front, Leigh Griffiths has scored four goals more than any Celtic player, including several stunners.

The weight of the world rested on Hibs’ shoulders at last season’s Scottish Cup final, when the stage was set for a century of pain to be wiped away by defeating their greatest rivals.  It was too much.  Now they take the field unburdened and vastly more dangerous than St Mirren, Hearts or Kilmarnock were when they overcame Celtic at Hampden recently.

Odds on Hibs are very generous.

I caught some chat online last night.  “Blackmail”, “extortion”, “imprisonment”, “getting rid of the problem”, “a catastrophe of an intensity that you…. clearly do not appear to understand”, “fraudulent”, “once the genie is out it will have a life of its own”.

What an unimaginable mess.

I think “Been an admirer of your recent work” is bound to become a euphemism in years to come for when something that should never have been said or written slips out.  This is a small glimpse into how the whole thing happened.

Fantastic Q&A with Willie Wallace this morning, thanks to Willie and Winning Captains.  Willie’s recollections of our great times are irresistible.  Reading the book as it came together was a joy.  You’ll love it.

Remember you can start Cup Final weekend by meeting Willie at a book signing at Waterstons’ on Sauchiehall St, tomorrow – 25th May, 46 years on from the day – from 2pm until 4pm.  If you can’t make it you can order a signed copy below.

I have never cried over football but I had tears in my eyes when I watched that video particularly when Jock Stein walked up to the entrance of Celtic Park with the European Cup. If the wife hadn’t been sitting next to me I would have been bubbling.

Thanks for posting it and well done to Canal +.

Financial fair play is to protect the club, it is to protect the club from the bankrupt,’ he says, ‘from the problems that they will see in the future. It’s not a matter to be more competitive. Financial fair play is to put regulation. If you want to buy a Ferrari, if you have the money, you buy a Ferrari; if you don’t have the money, you can’t buy the Ferrari. In football if you do not have the money, you can buy the Ferrari, the player and you pay him and everything, and you win – cheating.

‘That is not correct. My job is to regulate this situation. It’s not to have a better competition, it’s to protect the club.

‘Glasgow Rangers, Portsmouth and many others, they are in big bankrupt and they will disappear.

‘That was my point. But this is also very interesting and it could be a reflection for me next time. To put more competition.’

It was brought to my attention last night that some posters have been using nicknames from celtc fans, among other unacceptable names, for our manager. Fat Sally, fat tramp, McSCIAF, and other highly offensive terms. I don’t care what you think of our manager, these terms are simply unacceptable. I’m not asking everyone to call him Super Ally, but just have some respect. Frankly, anyone using a name for our manager that comes from celtc fans wants to take a long, hard look at themselves.

You are, as ever, free to have whatever opinions you want of our manager – debate his managerial abilities, his dress sense, whatever you want – but do not resort to these pathetic names for him.

I’ve sent a few PMs out this morning to repeat offenders and I will be monitoring this. Anyone who continues to use these terms will find themselves unable to use this site. “

  20. Hope this makes sense. I am trying to look at the idea that because rangers are no longer around Celtic should be winning the cups in Scotland front now on.

In the last 10 years of cup competitions Celtic have drawn Rangers obvious a

Total of 8 out of a possible 20 – only 40% of the time, Scottish Cup 3 times League Cup 5: SC Celtic wins=3 LC =2.

So 60% of the time the winner of a cup has nothing to do with a Celtic v Rangers game.

In the last 10 years we have won the Scottish Cup 4 times (5 on Sun).

Of those 4 we beat rangers 3 times in the knockout stages…there hasn’t been a Celtic v Rangers final in 10 yrs.

So out of the last 10 SCs we have only met rangers 3 times…30% only.

Out of the last 10 Scottish Cup finals 3 didn’t have Celtic or Rangers in it. 4 involved Celtic, 3 rangers.

So Celtic have played 40% , 30% Rangers, 30% neither.

But the msm say we should be winning the Scottish cup every yr from now on.

  22. sometimes I get jealous looking at the bigger leagues with the t.v income and their superstar players. then I watch arsenal celebrate 4th placed finish as if they had actually won something, when in fact all they have gain is more money to buy and pay those superstars who help them to come 4th in a league for rich boys. sorry, not for me.

now, if celtic spend/ reinvest in the club i.e. complete the celtic triange, build a hotel or two, restaurants, bars, museums, cafes, celtic stores, food stalls, improve the stadium, make celtic accessible to her followers, cheaper seats, better seats, standing areas, singing areas, media development, improving brand awareness, selling the celtic story worldwide etc… we could potentially be looking at a business with £100 million turnover or more over the next 5-10 years.

we stay in the scottish league we challenge, we win, we access Europe we sign the best players we can and we sell if they want to go, if they want more than we can afford we look elsewhere.

we don’t have superstars, we don’t pay silly money, we don’t celebrate 4th placed finishes as if we have won the league, we don’t grow supersize ego’s or look down our noses at small clubs and smaller leagues.

Just sitting in the London sunshine reflecting upon that day 45 years ago when I travelled to Lisbon with my late father and two brothers.

My Mum cooked a chicken for us – well it was an away game- we missed the start of the game and Inter’s goal and failed to eat the chicken in all the excitement. It was brought safely back to Glasgow on our midnight flight.

Nice wee day out for that chicken.

Anyway now watching groups of Bayern fans wandering around Central London. All very quiet and restrained- not at all like Lisbon, Seville and even Milan.

Good luck to the Celts tomorrow and look forward to continued unbroken success and our next European Final.
