Dangers of a league without whipping boys

792

At 1:45 yesterday afternoon the prospects of Celtic stretching their lead at the top of the table by the end of the day appeared slight.  The tide has turned in Celtic’s favour in recent weeks but leagues are hard to win and we need only think back to how many chances St Mirren peppered Fraser Forster’s goal with to appreciate the difference between winning games and dropping points.

Teams in the SPL are well organised, even eighth place St Mirren, who are on a run of poor form but apart from a couple of lapses defended well, created more chances than Celtic and played with adventure and confidence.

Celtic are the best team in the league but there will not be a single game before the end of the season in which they will be able to take anything for granted.  The result from yesterday we should pay most attention to is bottom of the league Dunfermline’s 0-3 win at Kilmarnock.  This is a league without whipping boys.

  1. As I watched the game yesterday I had Andrew’s quick flag down to the fact we had players in offside positions before the kick was taken. In other words he couldn’t wait to stick it in the air and up us.

For me it was a good goal, not a good call.

Maybe the dissalowed goal didn’t have a bearing on the result, but it blew my goals over coupon for a few hundred quid, and I’m sure there were many other punters were in the same boat.

They are cheats, plain and simple.

  4. So when Healy moves toward the ball last week and Jelavic scored, that wasn’t offside?

No consistency – Rankers rules and rules for

    The rest

  5. re Jelavic `s first goal last week

i immediately thought that Healy was offside

    nobody made mention of it

i thought i was misunderstanding the laws

then i realise that what i have misunderstood in the the fact that there are two sets of laws …one for them and one for us

  6. Offside on Beeb

‘A change to the rule was introduced two years ago, which allows a player to be in an offside position provided they are not “actively involved in play”.

It was designed to promote attacking football, but it is open to interpretation.

Fifa, world football’s governing body, gives the following definition:

“Interfering with play means playing or touching the ball passed or touched by a team-mate.”

However, a player does not necessarily have to touch the ball to influence play. They are still offside if, in the opinion of the referee, they are judged to be:

Interfering with an opponent If an attacker interferes with an opponent by either preventing them from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which deceives or distracts an opponent, then they are offside.’

Bold bit covers both Healy’s movement toward the ball and most certainly the Hamilton goal.

Although we all knew that anyway. Curious that the officials for those two games didn’t.

  7. tlwio

Ye beat me to it :-)

Incredible that Healy can be looked upon as anything than active!!

Well he can be looked upon as being a wee rat faced bigot but that’s another matter entirely.

  8. PFayr

    I wasn’t suggesting you were, I was though :>)

In fairness, I have done good from their cheating, especially when the hun are concerned, when betting in play and they go a goal down their odds get to a decent level and with the help of the officials there is usually money to be made.

Personally I would rather it wasn’t the case, but never look a gift horse in the mouth.

  9. PFAyr

The same, Sorry I was away checking up any credible rumours.

It seems PhilMac has got everyone going with his ‘experienced euro striker’ tweet.

I have heard the name Heskey mentioned twice today, please no…

  10. nothing without fans

I wouldn’t put it past the officials in our sectarian little country, there has been whispers. but nothing that can be substanciated, but we all know where their hearts lie.

  11. Just watched the highlights on BBC website of Aberdeen game. Tell me who the player is and why he is not booked/sent off for the assault on the Aberdeen goalie…about 5 seconds in!!!

    Broony…

for me, isn’t the best in the footballin stakes

if the point was pure technical ability, there would be any permutation of our midfield I’d put ahead of him

However – unless you’re the sons of Hamilcar – more is required, especially in oor wee league. Broony brings somethin we don’t yet have in abundance; he brings steel, and character, and the guts tae mix it. We lose somethin with him in the team, but we gain somethin else… I think it pays off.

  17. BULL67

That’s a sore one, I don’t like betting on the bhoys always have a fear I will jinx them, I bet on the hun all the time, and am actually happy to lose my money when they don’t win, tis a strange thing is the gambling, a buzz when you win, a buzz when you lose :>)

I’m not a fan of Brown, but he does bring something to the team.

I love it when my team is winning

I have no need of a scapegoat.

I have no need for invented controversy.

I find questioning of the manager’s selection risible when he has been shown to be right (Broonie made one and scored one; Sammi was a long way from being our worst player and has a lengthy spell of recent good form in the bank with the support)

And, when you have a modest football background and a lengthy record of wrong calls yourself (Adam Virgo, Mark Miller etc;) then a wee bit more humility in your own views and a wee bit more respect for your betters (those who have made a living in this environment) might not go amiss.

Your posting style involves a lot of bombastic wordsmithery and simplistic thought processes. Are you sure you would not be better suited to a tabloid style organ and readership rather than to a blog which claims to avoid lazy journalism?

No doubt you will attempt to spin that my replying indicates that you have successfully “hooked” another one but I am biting with my eyes wide open and with a questioning attitude.

I have posted this question before. Do you have a long term bet with Paul67 that, when your schtick fails to produce replies, you will agree that lazy journalism has died a death? So long as replies are forthcoming, you will believe that the Shug Keevins stylee still has merit???

Otherwise, what is it all about? The wee enthusiasms for cheap players? The desperate re-posts to get attention if your point is received with tumbleweed? The passive aggressive cries of being persecuted/hated when someone disagrees.

Does it serve Celtic well? Does it raise the standards of this blog or undermine them? Could an Edinburgh jury reach a verdict on these matters?

  21. The Exiled Tim, yeah a sore one. I know what you’re saying but I still couldn’t back that lot

  22. kelvinbhoy- Wee Healy bounced right off him, quite funny, but yes normal service is resumed, Imrie’s was as clear a yellow as you will ever see.

problem with our midfield is who do you leave out?

    I’ll start boilin the fat…

Ki, for me, has been poor the last few weeks. I know, I know, I know, he is a class player… he’s not doing it just now… drop him for a bit.

Forrest has to have the right. Broony and Vic (I know he faded today, may need to be subbed for part of a game) the middle and Commons now starts on the left, with Sammi potentially as sub. As long as they’re fit, Stokes and Hoops up front all day.

Never thought I’d say this but on current form Sammi deserves to start ahead of Commons as long as he’s played on the left behind the front two so that he plays with the ball in front of him with space to run into. Currently no team can cope with him doing that.

  27. The Singing Detective on

Blinkered views….of our man Lennie ?

Let’s hope our esteemed manager remembers that he has a Celtic stalwart out on loan at Leeds.

Yes,his team are back to winning ways and pushing for promotion, now he has returned from niggling injuries.

Our Young Hunskelper has picked up valuable and diverse experience in the Championship. And he did not look shabby against the reigning European Champions in Milan, back in the day..

His return to Paradise may one day be considered a watershed moment…….. comparable with the arrival of Jock Stein from the Valleys,or Bertie’s recall from Birmingham.

Now, he is nominally a centre half….and we will still be flush with them once Dan and Loovens are pensioned off in the Summer, and Kelvin commences his painting apprenticeship with Ole Gary Parker ?

However,it is the versatility of goal threat Young Darren that stands out.Whilst he will be needed at times in the centre half role,it is his ability to act as cover for Izzy at left back that makes him such a valuable asset.

He is at least as good in that role as left-footed Charlie-is-ma-darlin’

Young Matthews should not be asked to play on the left…he struggles defensively just like Mark Wilson did, when he bravely slotted in.

More importantly,Steady Joe should NOT be asked to fill in as LB,as he is essential to our midfield, and must be utilised to his full potential as an attacking midfielder, before his instincts are blunted through loss of familiarity.

The presence of Young Darren on the pitch would provide the requisite quota of Celtic Mallum, obviating the perceived need to select Oor Capitano, for each and every match, regardless of personal form and the unbalancing effect it may have when we are endeavouring to field our most effective formations.

We must learn to utilise our splendid forwards and midfielders in the positions in which they are most effective and comfortable.

At a stroke,Kojo’s clunking and misfiring Beverley Hillbillys’ jalopy can be magically transformed into a throbbing beast of a Ferrari Testarossa, with unlimited power and potential.Cookin’ wi’ gas….

So we should extend Darren’s contract now, while he’s reaching his full potential

and capable of surging down the pitch carrying a Victor Wanyama under each arm..

Otherwise,it will be no good crying over spilt milk, when Darren and his team-mates raise the EC trophy in Poland this summer.

Let’s hope Lennie shows remarkable fresh insight in considering this most important matter…

    Right ? Right !
