Dave Cormack’s empty words

489

“We have been doing local pilots on mental health and wellbeing in Aberdeen which are working.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

His interview, in the Daily Record, was full of empty management speech:

“Something I think we have to explore at the centre to drive an agenda.

“What do we want to be? What is our vision? I don’t know what the vision is. We don’t have a branding strategy.

“At the centre, it’s not run like a real company that would have a vision, a branding strategy or goals to drive income.

“The cup is half full, how can we drive things?”

It’s like he had just finished watching a very poor Ted Talk on business growth by an entrepreneur who sold for millions and has no idea how it happened.  Or maybe that’s really him.

Scottish football is the great grounder of egos.  Think your business background gives you better insight and decision making than those in an industry you’ve never worked in?  Buy Hearts or Aberdeen and find out.  Think that your experience as on the Conservative Party – Scottish executive while Tony Blair earned a landslide prepared you for anything?  Maybe you should become chief exec at Partick Thistle?

Football players have been granted ‘sports bubble’ special status, when they abuse that privilege by hitting busy pubs, they have let us all down.

  1. MM a very Happy Birthday just like the Glen Moray you mature with age. All the best H H Hebcelt

  2. This season should be stopped right now due to COVID…Aberdeen FC showing how NOT to behave……stop the season now…and it’s 10 in a row done and dusted , as we sit on top on the league !

    HH

  3. Ajeti – which now looks a goer – is a very good player. Strong and excellent at receiving the ball and linking the play. Happy if that goes through. Incidentally , I would not have been averse to Fletcher. Again strong , excellent touch , good football brain and clever at linking play. He certainly divided opinion ( that’s fine ; it’s all about opinions) but I would not have held the concerns many others obviously had about him .

I do hope the season ahead doesn’t become fractured and generally disjointed, but I sense a certain inevitability about that.

Hopefully a good showing and , importantly, 3 points at Killie on Sunday.

Not sure about anyone else but I’m finding it difficult to get too excited this season due to what is happening

    ——-

I’m well excited. Watching the Bhoys – even though not there in person – is playing a big part in getting me through this time. It especially helps when we win!!

There’s a certain wee poster on here won’t be agreeing with you on Ajeti. He reminds me of Gary Hooper a bit.Looks strong, which will help in our league.

  7. Paul67 was coruscated on here by some, for highlighting the lack of logic shown by the Scottish government in allowing people to go to pubs whilst barring any attendance at outdoor events, including football. Trial events down South with restricted attendance in cricket, horse racing and er snooker were swiftly abandoned, after one day in the latter case. So no data there data.

At this point in time, all other factors being equal, remaining the same etc. would I feel safer, be less at risk, in a crowded pub in Aberdeen or in in an audience of say 5000 at a primarily outdoor venue in Celtic Park?

Hypothetical I know, but you would be more likely to find me at the latter venue.

  8. Beleted Birthday Wishes To Melbourne Mick…

It’s interesting, I find these words of David Cormack progressive and to the point, a breath of fresh air in the Neanderthal culture that is Scottish Football.

If you compare and contrast these words with that of SPFL Director Ross Mc Arthur…

…it is not only regrettable but extremely embarrassing, that I have to provide this statement following the release of accusatory comments in a club statement made by the Chairman and CEO of Inverness, I am sadly now left with no option but to put the record straight.

“The individuals have been very careful not to mention me by name, but their intended target is clearly apparent.

“In life, you stand and fall by your reputation and your actions, and I thank the very many people from other clubs who have contacted me since these ‘leaked’ WhatsApp messages first surfaced, to offer their support. I like the company I keep.

“Since the SPFL director’s resolution was first issued, a number of clubs in the Championship would confirm it is the behaviour of Inverness that has continually been aggressive and confrontational. However, no one felt it necessary to win points in public, as robust conversations take place in the normal course of a competitive business like football.

“Turning to the ‘allegation’ regarding the information that was conveyed by me to Inverness FC, on Friday 10th April 2020.

“As confirmed by their own leaked WhatsApp message group, I clearly did so as Dunfermline Athletic FC Chairman and NOT as an SPFL Board Member (as was expressly agreed and verified, before the call with other Championship clubs).

Ross McArthur was bullying Clubs into taking the SPFL line, he thinks that by pushing the SPFL agenda with his DAFC hat on, exempts him from his SPFL fudicary duties – it does not.

You don’t choose whether at a certain point in time if you are a Director of this or that organisation, if you take a Directorship of an organisation you can’t turn on and turn off those duties and responsibilities with the turn of a switch.

The fact that the likes of McArthur and Mulrany don’t get that and they weren’t bullying, they were robust – really. Most modern managers would have HR giving you, your jotters for such a “robust” approach. They didn’t negotiate on a professional forum with; meeting agendas, minutes and actions but robustly negotiated on WhatsApp, tells you all you need to know about these dinosaurs.

Talking the hardman or empty management speech. I know what I prefer.

Scottish Football is in a backwater because of these guys.

The Celtic Board who gives a pittance of their profit, tax free, to the Celtic foundation for PR purposes is where the empty gestures come from, not Dave Cormack.

Aberdeen FC have a throw-back of a Manager. Dave Cormack has already expressed concerns. IMO he will rid himself of this poor example to his players and bring in a progressive Coach…

    …watch this space.

    Hail Hail

  9. JAMESGANG on 7TH AUGUST 2020 3:35 PM

I reckon the absence of fans will be to Celtic’s advantage in domestic games, when they are playing inferior sides, and to their disadvantage in European games, when playing against better sides.

The absence of fans removes a huge part of the whole dynamic of a match and strips it to the bare bones, so that the difference in quality between sides becomes more apparent and decisive.

Not sure what the financial consequences are though regarding fans being entitled to refunds.

  10. Stolen from another Scottish Football Forum

“I have it on good authority that the Aberdeen players only went to the bar to test their eyesight!” :))) por cierto.

    ……………………..,..

I don’t know why people are comparing one to the other. Going into a pub or attending a football match are both very dangerous pursuits.

  12. Happy Birthday MM 🥂🍻🍾🎂

Aberdeen should be docked every point of every game missed.

If its 3 games then they forfeit every game 3- 0 to their opposition.

It’s what a strong leadership would do to deter players/clubs and make clubs responsible for their employees actions.

    Shocking utterly shocking.

    ……………….

No problem. I realise that the opening of pubs was (foolishly) permitted but there has been a clamour from some to let fans back into football grounds. I was making the point that going to either is a dangerous risk that raises your chances of contracting the virus.

  17. Now for reasons only known to my good lady I have to travel across the city to pick her up from a hairdressers, why she could not go to the normal one on Alexandra parade I do not know. Or another more local.

Southampton fans were saying much the same about Elyanoussi. He has worked out well. Let’s not condemn Ajeti before he gets here.

  19. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I am sure that there was a stadium full of Chelsea fans only too willing to drive Chris Sutton to Glasgow rather than stop at the airport.

Certain players suit certain clubs and just don’t suit others – quite hard to judge anybody at West Ham tbh.
