Demonise Celtic and fawn SFA Ogilvie

898

You’re victim of a costly refereeing failure, what do you do?  Celtic wrote to the SFA for clarification.    There was no demand for censure of the officials or a ban for the Inverness player.

In 2011, when the SFA were victim of a costly refereeing error against Czech Republic, Association president, Campbell Ogilvie, took it upon himself to write to Uefa demanding the referee who failed to correctly interpret a penalty incident, be marked down, and that the player who dived is excluded from the remainder of the competition.  The Daily Record glowingly reported the actions here.

The SFA set a precedent: after being hard done by, demand action against the referee.  Don’t just let supervisory processes take their course.  This is the standard set by Campbell Ogilvie.

“An SFA spokesman” also made it his business to brief a grateful media on the actions of Mr Ogilvie.  This was a coordinated campaign by the SFA against a match official, as well as an attempt to circumvent process.

Is this fair enough?  Well, I don’t remember an outcry at the time.  A referee made a bad mistake in an important game.  Standards should have been higher.  The SFA would have been within their rights to say so, although they had no business trying to influence referee supervisory processes.  If only we had a competent administrator who would realise this.

Celtic are within their rights to say standards should be higher now and instead of trying to mislead by suggesting no one in the ground was convinced Celtic should have had a penalty, the SFA should acknowledge that standards can and must improve.

Saying that would shut Celtic up and give them nothing to MORE complain about.  Instead of being concerned by the actions of SFA referee chief Fleming.

What you will note is the utter contempt shown for your club by many for writing a letter asking for clarification, even from those who lauded Campbell Ogilvie for demanding a referee is demoted.  Celtic are the last superpower standing after the Long Cold War, but we’ll always be the enemy to some.  We may well win the next 30 league titles, but as long as Campbell ‘What school did you go to?’ Ogilvie is in charge at Hampden, you’ll know what we’re up against.

Great three points last night.  Particularly delighted for Gary Mackay-Steven.  He, and Stuart Armstrong, are still finding their feet at Celtic.  It will be next season before we see the best of them (think Stefan Johansen circa April 2014), but the early signs are encouraging.

Big Virgil had a better record from free kicks than we had from penalties a couple of seasons ago!

“Correct. the officials took a risk, thinking they could get away with it.

Of course they had the comfort of knowing the SFA and SMSM would be right behind them.

Not much of a risk really.

Well they have been backed up by the usual subjects but that doesn’t alter the fact that this mess has blown up on their face.

FIFA have even put their tuppence worth in. Their is an art to the duplicity they carry out, for this craft to be effective it must stay hidden, under the radar.

They have singularly failed to do that.

Ah, the BBC in all seriousness have reported that the SFA disciplinary panel regarded the non-award of the penalty as “an honest mistake.”

    ———-

Surely if they are saying it wouldn’t have been a penalty if they had seen it, then it can’t be a mistake?

  5. mullet and co 2 on

So this decision that the SFA have decided not to punish the player is solely based in them deciding not to punish him.

If you compare this to any other case the referee or any other official has not seen what has actually happens in those cases.

Eg player dives but assistant behind the goal says penalty. Retrospective action would be booking for the player.

in that example the official had the wrong interpretation. Why is an unseen handball different?

  6. Neganon

Then I apologise in this instance for my misinterpretation of your post.

Is that the offical response and reason?

If so then here we go. Right so, despite looking right at the incident and with a better view McLean listened to Muir who categorically said it hit the guys head. So who is in charge?

Even better is the lack of logic behind the decision. It’s undniable that meekings is guilty of handling the ball and donating a goal scoring opportunity. But despite that being the actual truth they will uphold the referees decision because one of the assistants fecked it up?

    Wow startlingly stupid logic eh!

    Hilarious. An absolute laughing stock.

By the way did kwe ins actually say that his years in journalism would be wasted if prejudice was proven? So in other words I’m sticking my fingers in my ears and singing loudly dos I don’t want to face the truth?

  8. I dont think i’d be far off the mark in saying SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan will not be in office this time next week.

The honest mistake quote is what they were told to say it was by Jim Boyce.

So… Steven McLean had his eyes shut then?

Why did he not over rule Muir?

Did Muir say it hit his head or is he prepared to take the fall for his full time colleague?

  10. When will Leigh Griffiths be cited for bringing the game into disrepute for incredibly causing this stooshie by heading towards goal?

  12. I’ve just sent this to my SNP MSP concerning the OBaF Act. With the impending election I’d ask as many of you as possible to contact your SNP candidates asking them similar questions to put as much pressure as we possibly can on the party to repeal this legislation.

Feel free to copy and paste it if you wish.

    Hi Christina

I’m interested in knowing whether football supporters who have direct experience of the OBaF Act will be afforded the opportunity to convey their experiences directly to political parties or leaders prior to the review being published.

I’m led to believe that Patrick Harvie has already met with a group of supporters so can you tell me if the SNP will be doing the same?

I’m also interested in what criteria was set for establishing the group who met with those who are responsible for reviewing the act and how many of those interviewed had any actual direct experience of the Act.

Em – is Falkirk not a wee team? Not only have they been cheated out of a play-off spot, now they have to play in a cup final against two players who should be suspended from it.

  17. Ps the reason for my email is there is growing unease as to how those conducting the review are collating their information.

Have they spoken to those who have witnessed the Act in action?

Have they spoken to those who’ve been arrested under the Act and have they recorded the reason for arrest?

Have they spoken to anyone who’s actually been found guilty?

We know the chances are that this will be a whitewash but let’s at least try to force them to conduct an open and informed investigation before the results are published.

    MISSING PERSON ENQUIRY

Police Scotland have today launched a missing persons enquiry in respect of former Grade One referee Stuart Dougal of Burnside, Rutherglen.

Concerns were raised regarding the whereabouts and welfare of Mr Dougal after he failed to appear in any of his usual haunts – newspaper columns, radio and TV broadcasts – this week.

Chief Inspector Farquhar Forbes of Rutherglen CID said: “We are extremely worried about the whereabouts of Mr Dougal.

“He can normally be found plastered throughout the print and broadcast media attacking Celtic FC and defending his friends and former colleagues in the refereeing fraternity whenever an honest mistake has been made. Most often he is the company of his associate Kenny Clark, however he has not been seen since Sunday and his family are extremely concerned.

“I would ask the public to be vigilant and to contact the police if they spot this man. He is known to frequent Masonic lodges and Orange social clubs, especially at functions organised by Sevco supporters clubs.

“I would especially warn any members of the public wearing green clothing not to approach this man as he is liable to wave a red card aggressively in their face.”

    My friends in Celtic,

This latest ridiculous decision by Scottish football authorities is now making us all a laughing stock. Josh Meekings is not the guilty partner here and can you imagine the outcry if this draconian, stupid and possibly illegal action was against one of our players prior to a Cup Final.

Everybody, but everybody knows it was as blatent a penalty as there ever could be, but in my opinion it was the wrong time for us to register a complaint. To outsiders of the Celtic family it reeks of “sour grapes” and bad losers.

We had ample opportunity to “take on ” the authorities, eg the Tonev farce and we did not.

We should have there and then

    …………………………………

    Mr Greenhingingdonkeyfullofsweeties,

I very much disagree with a lot of that.

Meekings IS the guilty one, since it was his decision to deliberately handball on the line and then celebrate his offence by posing with the offending haun for the redtops. Had he an ounce of integrity (that pesky word again) he would have kept his head down after the game and just been happy that his team won.

Are Celtic really wrong to complain? Really? I think the timing of the complaint and the wording could have been better, but, wrong to complain at all? That letter was aimed at Celtic’s own constituency, us – me and you – the fans. It wasn’t directed at the SFA at all. Celtic know that they were blowing in the wind with their letter seeking clarification (not a complaint), because the SFA had already started peddling their own second and more moral response stuff.

The only people saying we are bad losers etc are those who have their own and totally separate agenda for doing so. Lazy journalists asking barking dugs for a comment about this doesn’t make their response relevant or appropriate. Whether it’s ex Celtic or ex anyotherteam players, mince is the normally the outcome.

The same lazy scribblers are the ones who ridicule Celtic repeatedly.

We were cheated by incompetence at the very least and we are entitled to feel aggrieved about that. Any attempt to persuade us to take it on the chin is just another level of the abuse – ie, “well we and you know that you got horsed there but any protests from you is just hypersensitivity on your part.” That is the core attitude that permits abuse to survive and continue. In other words, they are telling us we have no right to assert our own position especially when we are aggrieved.

The action by the SFA was less draconian and bizarre than the Tonev decision and appeal outcome. Regardless of the new “balance of probabilities standard of proof” in discipline matters, that decision boiled down to one man’s word against another. We have lost players such as Boerrigter and Tonev when the allegations were at least questionable, never mind highly selective by the SFA.

Meekings should not have remained on the field and if it had been one of our players I have no doubts that we would have been treated at least the same as him. In any sane world where integrity is valued, his presence on the field at the final would be wretched. The fact that some feel for him is social media flim flam crap. Nobody is ever responsible for anything in the new world order apparently.

I’ve had replies in the past, most of it nonsense that only served to raise my blood pressure. The reason for this recent email is for the reasons I highlighted in my second post mate.

  24. This is a superb opportunity for celtic.

The decisions made during the game and the explanations offered by the SFA are patently absurd.

They are on the ropes. Their arrogance means they think they can get away with anything.

But the absurdity of their decisions just needs to be publicly questioned and the whole house of cards fall.

The goal is gaping. There is no keeper. We simply need to tap the ball into the net.

Over to you PL. All of the celtic support are watching, ready to celebrate.

A chance to change scottish football forever.

    We ahold our breath Peter.

    Death or glory.

    Which is it to be?

  25. From BBC website…..

Celtic, who had goalkeeper Craig Gordon sent off, wrote to the SFA to ask why Meekings was not dismissed and a penalty awarded.

Can’t recall Celtic asking why Meekings was not dismissed.

Btw, if it’s now being claimed that Maclean told him Muir told him it was a head on the ball has Tony McGlennan been set up? After all just yesterday we were being told case could only go ahead if all six officials hard said they had missed the incident.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Celtic done up once again.

  26. leftclicktic

The words “understood” and “honest mistake” are BBC words, words designed to persuade us of the basis of the Tribunal’s decision. The Judicial Tribunal, by not publishing a legal rationale, (and I use those words advisedly), has left it to the MSM to explain it to us. I mentioned earlier that I listened to Chris Mclaughlin on Radio 5, who in response to a specific question from Anna Livsey, regarding the reasons behind the decision, admitted that they had not been given, but “presumably”……….

Presumably the actual wording will reflect that of Jim Boyce and Neil Lennon and the MSM itself, we all agree it was a penalty, ie deliberate use of the hand, but how can we be sure it was deliberate after the fact? Lewis Carroll eat your heart out!

  27. Glad the ref and his team have been cleared of their so-called mistake. After reviewing the tv evidence, there was clearly no hand ball case to answer.

On a serious note, I am glad the boy will be able to play in the final. The sending off rule is ridiculous as a penalty and yellow card in these circumstances (had he handled it) would be sufficient punishment. I know it’s not the rules but makes sense to me

  28. Neganon2

  29. Mncelt through what you have just posted.

Your sentiment is shared. It doesn’t seem fair he misses a final. But the rules are there for everyone and must be fairly and evenly applied. So you are gimp img licence to the SFA to selectively follow their rules.

Think about it please. Don’t misplace sympathy for fairness.

The ball “just hit his hand”. Aye, after he raised his hand to where the ball was going!

  31. The referee and assistants saw the incident but didnt see the hand-ball . They all saw the ball hit the Meekins head. So theyve seen something that didnt happen. Maybe they suffering from a collective attack of “masonic hallucinations”.
