Demonise Celtic and fawn SFA Ogilvie

898

You’re victim of a costly refereeing failure, what do you do?  Celtic wrote to the SFA for clarification.    There was no demand for censure of the officials or a ban for the Inverness player.

In 2011, when the SFA were victim of a costly refereeing error against Czech Republic, Association president, Campbell Ogilvie, took it upon himself to write to Uefa demanding the referee who failed to correctly interpret a penalty incident, be marked down, and that the player who dived is excluded from the remainder of the competition.  The Daily Record glowingly reported the actions here.

The SFA set a precedent: after being hard done by, demand action against the referee.  Don’t just let supervisory processes take their course.  This is the standard set by Campbell Ogilvie.

“An SFA spokesman” also made it his business to brief a grateful media on the actions of Mr Ogilvie.  This was a coordinated campaign by the SFA against a match official, as well as an attempt to circumvent process.

Is this fair enough?  Well, I don’t remember an outcry at the time.  A referee made a bad mistake in an important game.  Standards should have been higher.  The SFA would have been within their rights to say so, although they had no business trying to influence referee supervisory processes.  If only we had a competent administrator who would realise this.

Celtic are within their rights to say standards should be higher now and instead of trying to mislead by suggesting no one in the ground was convinced Celtic should have had a penalty, the SFA should acknowledge that standards can and must improve.

Saying that would shut Celtic up and give them nothing to MORE complain about.  Instead of being concerned by the actions of SFA referee chief Fleming.

What you will note is the utter contempt shown for your club by many for writing a letter asking for clarification, even from those who lauded Campbell Ogilvie for demanding a referee is demoted.  Celtic are the last superpower standing after the Long Cold War, but we’ll always be the enemy to some.  We may well win the next 30 league titles, but as long as Campbell ‘What school did you go to?’ Ogilvie is in charge at Hampden, you’ll know what we’re up against.

Great three points last night.  Particularly delighted for Gary Mackay-Steven.  He, and Stuart Armstrong, are still finding their feet at Celtic.  It will be next season before we see the best of them (think Stefan Johansen circa April 2014), but the early signs are encouraging.

Big Virgil had a better record from free kicks than we had from penalties a couple of seasons ago!

  1. If the my understanding of the BBC report is correct McLean is supposed to have asked his Assistant behind the goal if it was hand ball and the response was that it hit his head. This incident was not subsequently included in the after match Referees report and so the Compliance Officer then cites the Inverness player, at a panel meeting the Referee explains his reasons and the Panel decide that since the Referee had seen the incident and deemed it not a foul it was not their place to punish the player because the Referee got it wrong.

So McLean and his Assistant were wrong not to see the original foul and wrong not to include their reasoning behind the decision in the after match report.

    Farce.

    Totally agree.

I was always under the impression that the CO only got involved in incidents that the ref missed.

We are now being told the ref dealt with it in play.

If both these scenarios are true then we have a problem. They both cannt be true or have we got a dead cat in a box situation

Maybe I will just raise my head above the parapet a little.

Airdrieonians were able, quite legitimately, to buy back and use their original name because the legal process of their liquidation had completed after some 11 or so years. This has been posted before, and not only by me.

Genuine question to which I don’t know the answer: can you explain why freezing Council Tax affects poor people the worst?

Otherwise, I agree with most of the remaining points of your post.

  5. Auldheid ok I am with you.

Right then so they have given an explanation for not punishing meekings. But that explanation is that Muir said head and the referee ignored his own eyesight. A classic honest mistake. But the decision says they got it wrong and the ref got it wrong so we are going to uphold the refs wrong decision.

And you are saying celtic should say okay to the explanation of what happenned ithe first place (which is patently nonsense) and be ok with the twisted logic that says its oka for the ref to make a wrong call and be proven wrong and we will uphold the referees wrong decision in the first place?

Ah we are down the rabbit hole now eh? All in the name of denying the obvious conspiracy.

  6. Way im Reading it.. maybe im wrong..Ref sees the ball hit ICT guy…Not sure if its Hand or Head..asks guy on goal line..Guy says Head…Is that whats being Said…

  7. Neganon2 – Agreed that the rules as they stand should have been enforced. I’m just saying that I personally disagree with the rules regarding preventing a goal scoring opportunity. A penalty and booking should suffice as often a sending off spoils a good game.

By the same token, Craig Gordon would not have been sent off either. That one was probably a penalty although the forward had arguably already made an attempt at goal. The only reasoning for sending him off was that the ref thought he could have gone round the keeper and managed to save the ball going out of play and turned it into the net.

  8. Alasdair MacLean on

    Concoction.

Anyway, the pedantic linguistic in me wants to know the type of mistake an honest one is.

Natural logic would conclude that the opposite of an honest mistake would be a dishonest one.

Is it possible to make a dishonest mistake?

    A contradiction in terms surely?

  9. Celtic should not be challenging SFA with a letter – Celtic should be challenging SFA with a Dossier!!!

  10. the glorious balance sheet on

Last week we had the farce of the last day Championship fixtures being manipulated to give Sevco an unfair advantage. Stewart Regan wasn`t slow in putting the boot into Neil Doncaster over that.

I fully expect Doncaster to have a few sly digs at Regan in return over the next few days over the Meekings muck-up.

The SPFL and the SFA are both not fit for purpose and run by half-wits.

  11. Celtic scouts have been dispatched to the NBA playoffs to identify possible defensive targets now that handball is deemed appropriate in the course of defending goal bound efforts.

  12. its the collective incidents and patterns of discrimination which make our case plausible – not individual events!

  13. The officials did not see something that did happen but did see something that did not happen and the panel did not see any reason to do anything official even after one of their other officials did see something and said that justice had to be seen to be done.

  14. Celtic sent their letter asking SFA for an explanation.

    Today is Thursday.

Is a response “in the mail?”

We have had a video hearing and a decision in the interim.

We should expect at least a full explanation soon?

    Shirley within 48 hours.

  15. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

So Muir saw the ball hitting Meekings’ head, even though his view was blocked by Leigh Griffiths…..???

  16. Maybe mentioned earlier but just in case an update on the young Celts.

They currently lead Hamilton one nil 65 minutes gone. Goal scored by McCart.

  17. Friesdorfer you are quite correct.

However the sequence of events here is what is revealing.

Ardrie United when from Airdrie United to ardrionians in scottish league publications across scotland overnight with absolutely no explanation or discussion just about the time the big lie was being promoted.

Months later this stuff about legal rules and being able to buy back names appeared as the reason.

Here’s the thing my friend. For the name to vp change overnight across all of our media without a word as to why begs the question of conspiracy. Even if innocent wouldn’t you expect th explanation as to why the name is changing to appear at the same time rather than months later.

Council tax? Well largely the services that the council supply are aimed at the poorest and most viulnerable in our society (successive governments in the UK love to give councils the really hard work and then reduce budgets). Freezing council tax then removes or reduces those services and of course the really vulnerable and poor suffer. Freezing council tax is just a bribe mate.

Bit like the Tories promising to cut taxes. It benefits the rich and hurts the poor.

  19. Yes agreed mncelt these rules are too draconian but the SFA are being selective in how to apply rules. That doesn’t work does it?

  20. BGX hey I answered your question earlier. I am so looking forward to your response……

  21. Regarding The ICT player…IF the ref said he wasnt sure and asked his assistant who said Head…Whats Changed..Really coz i dont see Any Change…

  24. Many, many moons ago I started reading CQN because it was Celtic Quick News NOT Lazy journalism.

For all those promulgating the myth that it’s Celtic coming out of this looking bad, please re-read the words of Vincent Lunny on Tuesday.

“The very fact that the action has been raised is confirmation that all six match officials missed it and the fact that the compliance officer thinks it is a sending-off offence suggests that the referee has got it wrong, but the panel should be left to come to their decision on their own without any other external pressures.”

So the Compliance officer was dealing with it because the match officials missed it, this is one of the main functions of the SFA CO.

If the Referee deals with the incident at the time the CO doesn’t get involved.

Fast forward two days – the Referee dealt with it at the time.

Total nonsense, don’t give their disinformation oxygen. It’s lies.

    Hail Hail

  25. Good evening all.

Serious question, although I will be renewing my ST, is it really worthwhile renewing? Is the blatant cheating going to continue, answers on a postcard, and are Celtic going to be forever held back by the Hampden Cartel? These people should be subject to criminal enquiries, not just sporting ones. A good sports lawyer should be able to sort this lot out, but, more importantly, the Fraud Squad could have a field day going over their documents. Unless our ole buddy, CO gets to the shredder first. Bowing out again. Byeeeeee.

Weefra HH praying to Wee Oscar.

  26. I’ve just submitted the following complaint to the BBC

On the page mentioned above you write that “Celtic, who had goalkeeper Craig Gordon sent off, wrote to the SFA to ask why Meekings was not dismissed and a penalty awarded.”

Celtic’s statement reads “with the Club being inundated today, Celtic can confirm that it has written to the SFA regarding yesterday’s match and in particular the incident involving Leigh Griffiths and Josh Meekings. First and foremost we absolutely congratulate Inverness Caledonian Thistle on reaching the Scottish Cup final. They are a fantastic club and reaching the final is a great achievement. However, given the level of reaction from our supporters and across football, we are duty bound to seek an understanding of what actually happened. We have not been given any other specific explanation so far and this is simply to understand the circumstances of what went on and why such an obvious error was made.”

Nothing in this statement supports the frankly inflammatory accusation that Celtic sought punishment for Josh Meekings. Indeed, on Tuesday the former compliance officer Vincent Lunny confirmed that there was no connection between the club’s letter and the decision to offer Meekings a one match ban. Can you advise what led the BBC to ignore this view.

I’ll post any response once it’s received

  27. I gave you a gig answer to your prove that the ref was lying question earlier.

    The blog awaits your response.
