Dougie Dougie and SFA cover-up

897

As a consequence of items relating to lies told by former referee Dougie McDonald’s no longer being found by searches through Google’s UK portal, while reaming available on the US portal, a suspicion arose that McDonald has used recent EU ruling to have these items expunged from the search engine.

During a Dundee United-Celtic game in 2010 McDonald awarded Celtic a penalty, then quickly changed his mind.  He lied to Neil Lennon after the game, and to the SFA supervisor about the circumstances which caused him to change his mind.  Celtic Quick News published an excerpt from the supervisor’s report, which was based on information McDonald subsequently admitted was false.

Having admitted to a lie, and under pressure from Celtic, McDonald resigned later in the year, but the greater stench was that of cover-up.  Having set the chain of events in motion, McDonald realised his error and admitted what he did to the SFA on the day of the game.

Having lied, he quickly came clean, but the actions of the SFA were far more serious.  With knowledge of the lie, the SFA were now in ownership of it.  They should have told McDonald to apologise to Neil Lennon and the referee supervisor.  Instead, they publicly reaffirmed the lie.

Even after the cover-up came to light, the SFA continued to close ranks on Celtic, faces were set to stone.  If Celtic didn’t know their place when it came to the dark arts of the SFA, they became acutely aware of it then.  Nothing could ever be the same again.

I have sympathy for McDonald.  He made a mistake but quickly did the right thing.  His name is tarnished largely as a consequence of the actions of his superiors.  If he called Neil Lennon the next day to extend the apology he gave to the SFA, the matter may have ended there and then.  He was not an innocent victim of an SFA cover-up, but he was a kind of victim.

The fight to change the SFA goes on.  Peter Lawwell is now on the board and some of the faces have moved on, but it is not a healthy body.  The vast majority of the 93 member clubs are not conspiratorial in nature and have no ill towards Celtic or any other club, but overhauling the labyrinth of committees, with vested interests which have been decades in the making, will look like pushing water uphill to anyone committed to reform.

Our interests are best served leaving the SFA behind, and we’re not alone in that.

Excitement builds as the 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place tomorrow in Aberdour, with Frank McGarvey and Len Murray!

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation. We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle. Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle. Anyway …. to other if not more important things:

Yesterday was an absolute Bar Steward day on the work front in a number of ways. Completely annoying and frustrating, unproductive and useless.

Accordingly, today I am taking the only course of remedial action possible… and that is not really working at all and taking time out for a mini social revolution which may make me take the decision to emigrate to the hinetrlands of the earth by the end of the day.

In the interim, as BSR points out….. what boots do I wear to a golf day out?

Not that I will be swinging the Niblock you undertstand.

Of even greater importance is the fact that I sort of mastered a 40 year old tune in the guitar last night…. and of that I am pretty proud.

It will make no difference to the world in the great scheme of things, will not put right the frustrations of yesterday and will certainly have no bearing on BskyB or its owner.

But it sure brightens up my day a bit and makes me realise that I need to get of my arse and get on with those things that are really important.

Aberdour by earlysih afternoon for some chat and a meal, Celtic Shop in Clydebank tomorrow with Yogi, Bertie and Tommy G… there is no rest for the self indulgent.

Aberdour day, always strikes me as a great choice for a gathering. of Celts.

A fascinating little neuk in the east steeped in ancient Scottish Gaelic history, it’s easy to transcend yourself back in time, especially in case you find yourself dozing whilst listening to the CQN speeches.

There is a tiny island off Aberdour with the last remaining ancient medieval abbey located on the island of Inchcolm on the Firth of Forth. It’s located at the centre of the island, and was founded in the 12th century during the episcopate of Gregoir; Bishop of Dunkeld It’s now maintained by Historic Scotland, of course being abandoned shortly after the reformation.

In Aberdour itself there is a lovely beach and one or two typically Scottish watering holes, with big Telly’s, as they do. A nice bistro café called McTaggarts for coffee and a snack, you can play bingo in Forester’s pub, but sadly for CQN’rs only on Sundays, or you can browse one or two retro bric a brac shops in the narrow main street,

Next door in slightly less up market Kinghorn there’s another beautiful sandy beach, and two Caravan Parks which back in the swinging sixties were filled with Glaswegians, there for ‘ra fair’. During the Glasgow holiday the place was heaving with happy singing working folk that knew how to enjoy themselves in the pubs, where they mingled with the bug eyed locals exchanging patter, and song, till throwing out time.

The parties continued in homes on wheels and the pre Buckfast pubs maybe a throw back to Inchcolm’s monks gave out the local “sherry’ in ginger bottle receptacles, which fair kept the singing going. If you went to the harbour at teatime you could buy freshly caught fish, or simply wait for a supper at 11.00 where Luciani’s was famed for proper fish suppers in newspaper.

Just on the crest of a steep hill outside Aberdour going into Kinghorn there’s a monument to King Alexander III. History says he fell from his horse down a cliff to a rocky grave after a night of merry making across the Forth in Edinburgh.

The last of the Celtic kings, until Larsson.

Spot on with your observations about Murdoch and the personal choices we make. Plenty on here will moan about the EPL this, that or the other – and how it damages our beloved Celtic – but any suggestion that any subscription to SKY Sports damages Celtic is largely met with tumbleweed…

The death of Alexander III caused huge problems for Scotland as he died leaving no heir.

The pretenders to the throne decided that the best course of action was to ask Edward I of England to decide who it should be.

    Surprisingly,he chose himself!

There is one thing that would have made me vote yes.

    If Alex Salmond had said.

In an independent Scotland we will not allow the likes SKY to broadcast unless they pay a sponsorship to Scottish football that matches what they pay to English football.

This would would be calculated by proportioning the relative size of the Scottish population in comparison to the rest of the UK.

If Celtic can’t get into the EPL, then they must lobby for the termination of English football being shown in Scotland, unless the broadcasters gives us a fair share of the TV revenues.

BRTH – you’re a good man and it was a cheap shot from me, but your statement “you did that” irked me.

I have Virgin phone/broadband/TV at home and I found myself in a difficult situation when Setanta UK went belly up. Previously, I had managed to avoid handing over money to Digger, but I was left with the option of buying Sky Sports or trying to get dodgy streams on the laptop.

I don’t go to many away games, for various reasons, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy the subscription so that I could sit on my own couch and watch my team on TV.

The people running our club are way too close to Sky for my liking. The current TV deal is worth a lot of money to the other clubs, but it’s practically worthless to us. The management of the club clearly value the UK and European exposure that Sky offers, but I would have loved it if Celtic had been the driving force behind a new Scottish subscription TV channel and told Digger to get stuffed.

Approximately £600M per year from Scottish subscribers going to Sky and the SPL get what per season….£15M?! Many fans like myself would love to bin Sky, but the club don’t feel the same.

I understand your reasoning re Sky — and it is absolutely your choice and your right and your option same with everyone else.

All I am pointing out is that Sky and Murdoch go way beyond things like football and for me they are an organisation I want noting to do with at all.

The only way to change them, or halt them, in my opinion is to starve them of money.

    Moonbeams

Yes I have paid for tickets from Celtic, you know I have and have done for years.

Now, I also believe and have said on many occasions, that I believe their policy re the Police, the act, the stewards and the fans are wrong.

I can boycott the club or I can support the club but at the same time voice my disagreement with them on these matters.

At the moment– I choose to do the latter.

WC mentioned that CQN will have a new book out soon enough re the 80’s effectively.

I will find that interesting reading ( maybe ) because during that decade I know little about the details of many games that others talk about because I took issue with something regarding the club and sent back season tickets in the post and did not renew them for many many years.

    Again a personal choice.

With the act etc I think we have to be vocal and as I now wave my dad’s shares, ( you will recall I refused to buy any ) hold a season ticket and all that stuff it gives the voice some validity — though it may be ignored.

I would never want to be on the periphery of the Murdoch organisation let alone have the right to get inside in the tiniest way and so there I see a difference between the two.
