Duffy: “What goes on behind the scenes”

643

“Not many know what goes on behind the scenes”, Shane Duffy’s words on Instagram as he said his goodbyes to Celtic yesterday.  Arriving a year ago as a 28-year-old international with years of English Premiership experience, he looked like the ideal addition to the Celtic squad.

Whatever ailed Shane to prompt Brighton to move him on, a year in Glasgow, much of it in isolation away from family and his kids, did nothing to help.  His parting sentiment alludes to some of his challenges has endured off the park.

If footballers would only be machines, nothing like this would happen.  Competitions would resolve in a manner the aborted European Super League would approve.  Shane was physically fit and desperate to be a winner at Celtic but still came off the rails. You can bookmark him for a reflective piece when his career is over, I expect he will tell a familiar tale of the toll life’s pressures took.

Yip, still no news.  No, not a good sign.

  1. Best of luck to Shane. It didn’t work out but he’s still got that Scottish Cup Winners medal in his pocket.

As for us and Eddie, I can’t say I’m surprised. My anger at the board has now turned to apathy.

  2. Following our last managerial appointment, our CEO bragged that no other candidate had been considered.

I would hope we have learned from that and have a number of quality candidates under consideration this time round.

    However, with each passing day……

  3. Hope i am wrong but the probability of lengthy excuses tried our best ,not ideal moment , let down by promises etc,etc looks on the cards followed by appointment of a lesser light

  4. Go tell the Spartim on

I’m sure he wanted to be a success as we all did, didn’t work out, move on.

As for manager etc, I’m not at all surprised it’s symptomatic of the stewardship

The fact is that this board have always been reactionary regards managerial appointments, never having a business continuation strategy in place. Hence NL’s full time appointment last year, and my “fear” is that we are in another period of lastminute.com actions. No offence to a great guy but it reeks of Jo Venglos’s appointment (insofar as the knee jerk style of appointment)

  6. I’m not wedded to Eddie Howe as boss. I’d like that. But he is not the only capable candidate around Europe of that type. However I am wedded to seeing some sign of improvement in our recruitment processes.

In my working life I have found that extensive handover periods from a long standing employee to a new guy are no good for the new guy amd not much use for the organisation. I suspect McKay is yet to be earning his full crust despite wanting to get the shackles of the other guy off.

I’m relatively new to being disgruntled with the business operations of the club, but frankly they are performing woefully where it counts the most.

I agree with almost all of that, only thing I can’t agree with is that this is the last minute for this board.

This lot could easily hold out until we are out of Europe before making a decision, we’ve ages yet.

Not a thin dime as a wonderful leader once said.

Quite correct Paul – many on this blog were hail hailing him as the final piece in our 10iar jigsaw.

I posted earlier of possible ructions behind the scenes when other players became aware of the wages Celtic were paying him – however you allude to possible family separation issues exacerbated of course by Covid.

Perhaps that was indeed the issue, and maybe the lockdown restrictions also impacted our overseas players more severely than those at Ibrox…I wonder why.

Nipping on a jet, a la Bolingoli, on days off between training & playing, was probably the norm.

At the moment its looking more and more like JK in temporary charge with a severely depleted squad until we are out of Europe then he’ll get the job on a rolling 12month contract. Stadium will be half full with customers.

  10. The only potential by ball here for the clubs recruitment team is that they may be waiting for domestic seasons to come to an end before being able to announce certain personnel arriving.

If they had a rabbit to pull from the hat this was the week for it. So I don’t think they have.

Our hosts last line today has me very concerned. It seems this season hasn’t finished testing us.

My meaning was in the analogy of someone eventually. A strong board would or should have had various options of all near equal qualities the next manager should have. As it is Lawell will be looking about to see what Lou Macari is up to as probably thinks wee Fergus was harsh on him… The longer this goes on the more an underwhelming appointment I expect – Lambert was on Radio Shortbreid last night too….

I, along with many was delighted with Shanes signing. A good tough old fashoned CH that would also bag a few goals. I have to blame Lenny ( which Im loath to do btw) and John Kennedy for playing 3 CHs to accomadate him. I, in my very honest opinion, feel this was a major factor in our now forgettable season. My hometown team, Dundalk also tried it last season with a similar outcome.

Real pity it didnt work out for Shane and I wish him all the very best for the future.

If Paul does indeed have PL’s ear , the last line of this article is a major concern . I’m not sure whether the reaction from the fanbase will be apathy or anarchy .

  17. Go tell the Spartim on

I thought Philbhoy was joking this morning re Kennedy

I think a lot of roosters have come home to roost with regards our business acumen and how the “customer” is treated contemptuously. Big Dom has a job on his hands. If PL stays in some capacity then I think it’s to further his career and not our “cause” whatever that may be.

  18. On some serious issues, the terminology

“ Yip, no news yet “ , is good news .

The new Celtic manager might not be a serious issue with our PLC , or let’s be honest, they’d have had a new manager months ago.

How much does Dermot Desmond actually care?

  19. glendalystonsils on

Don’t worry about the apparent lack of activity on the manager front , it’s simply that due to a burst pipe , the showers at CP are not working .

    For what it’s worth.

I was told weeks in advance of Dr Venglos’ appointment by “someone in the know” who i socialised with at the time that Celtic were appointing “an Eastern European at the World Cup”.

Dr Venglos RIP had been employed by FIFA as a chair of some technical committee.

He was not a knee jerk appointment.

Nothing I have seen in the last 4 months convinces me Celtic have any intention other than waiting for S Clarke to be available after Euro 2020.

If that means he goes on holiday for two weeks and starts at Celtic the week before a CL qualifier we will face with basically the under19s, so be it.

Sell another player to recoup the shortfall.

It’s going to be Keane and Kennedy. News of additional Sevco investment and Lawwell’s project to restore a strong hun is complete. They’ll dominatr the coming years.

I was delighted when Duffy signed, obviously didn’t work out for a lot of reasons, I wish him all the best, he could have stayed in the EPL, but wanted to play for Celtic.

Shane Duffy – was like a Trojan horse left by Sevco on the Celtic way sneaked in when everyone was asleep – the worst Centre Back we’ve never seen.

  25. With his parting comments, Shane Duffy showed himself to be a class act as a person. the very poorest ever performing footballer who gets to pull on the hoops, even once, has already achieved more in football than 99.999% of the rest of us and is worthy of respect.

    Do you like Michelle Mone?

What a strange question on CQN.

If I may be so bold to answer. I don’t know her, I doubt JHB would know her.

She has lost well over 8 stones and shown young girls to be positive. She has helped raise millions for charity including the very important breast cancer charities.

Who cares if she is a Tory if she helps save lives, she comes from humble beginnings in the East End of Glasgow and in my opinion I would welcome her to Paradise anytime.

    Cheers and HH.
