Liverpool have finally won the race to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk after agreeing a world record £75 million fee for a defender.

    Calculators at the ready …

  2. G67- re VVG, there is a % of the fee and a % of the profit combined….about £8 mil plus….lovely…

  4. Haven’t been on much for last couple of days but have lurked and noted our ‘new’ arrival Warrenpoint now renamed as Marcella.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this poster is a reincarnation of a previous one, my guess is Sionnach Abú.

Time will tell but I predict Marcella will be a dominant force for a few weeks or more and will then either step out of line or get bored.

Only positive is that my memory of Sionnach is that he posted some very good links.

P.S. I am a life long unrepentant Republican and I totally agree with Raymac’s post.

Bit more detail on Van Dijk deal. It’s £70m, rising to around £75m. Southampton wanted big chunk up front as they plan to be active in January too and want to get an attacker in quickly.

  7. Rotten news for Johnny Hayes, and the club and fans.

Get yourself back stronger and better than ever Johnny Bhoy….the Celtic Family will be waiting for you…and with you all the way.

The Huns surely can’t be in any more of a rage than they have been for years should Celtic get a good ratio of Virgils transfer ????

Then again…NOTHING surprises me about that Manky Mob !

  8. For the record i think VVD is a good footballer be he isn’t worth £75m. Thrived in Scotland and in a solid Southampton unit with two midfield sitters in front of him. He will be exposed at Liverpool, Klopp’s system is murder police if you’re a defender. Anyway, grateful for the cash. What prospect will we be splashing £400k of it on??

  9. Very tough on Jonny, I had a break something similar & have a rod inserted as well.

It is relatively easy to recover from, 6 weeks in plaster before rehab. However best scenario will be back for pre season training in June.

Still think it was reckless by Meeking, he has got away with it because he injured himself in the process.

Best of luck Jonney, come back stronger for the 8 in a row season..

  10. Don’t get too excited about sell on fees, a financial wizard on FF has worked it out……

If the £75m is including everything for the deal including wages and agents fees.

We’d have people, buffalo, claim that Dembelly and his agent are on 30% of that transfer so let’s presume the same here.

A £75m player must be on wages of at least £150k a week and for £75m I’d assume at least a 4 year deal.

£75m less £22.5m to Van Dick and his agent leaves £52.5m.

4 years wages at £150k a week is £31m and that leaves £21m.

They get a percentage of £21m. 10% of that is £2.1m and that’s even before if it is 10% of the profit which would be about £800k.

FFS, is Arnold’s brother in law back? No wonder they went bust.

  12. Thetimreaper.

    Excellent news.

I’m sure Brendan will have it spent already. :-)

Celtic have done well out of Virgil.

I reckon fee and sell on come to over 20 million and he was a very good player for us.

He scored a few crackers for us too. I remember his goal away to St J fondly.

    Hail Hail

Just read the article ‘Celtic in the roaring 80’s’, brilliant article, just brilliant..

Agreed great read that brought the memories flooding back

  14. Sometimes defenders can be too good at not being defenders, and I reckon like a lot of Celtic fans VVD might come into that category, many a ‘soft goal’ was lost whilst the big Dutchman was the main man, with us.

Touch of the Alan Hansen’s and he’ll need a proper stopper to augment his style

in the heart of any defence. Very comfortable on the ball, bags of skill doesn’t always make the best Centre Half IMHO.( Jackie Charlton?)

Anyway we’ll take the money and wait for “ All transfer money received will be reinvested in the development of Celtic FC “ © Peter Lawwell.

Our next marquee signing probably in summer could dwarf Torre Andre Flop and the tax avoiders .

  15. Lovely night for a game of fitba’ at the Victorian lavvy in Govan.

As a Celtic shareholder I wonder how much dividend I’ll rake in this January transfer window?

  18. Roberts out for 3 months, Hayes out for the rest of the season, no back up for Sinclair and Forrest. A winger in January?
