Europa failure would compound acute challenge for also-rans

1087

I’m not going to laugh at results against Luxembourgers or Lithuanians – it’s not so long since Gibraltarians bloodied the nose of a team who went on to become invincible treble winners. Scottish clubs have a long history of pitching up in June and July wholly unprepared for European football.

These results only retain the ability to concern if they are not resolved by remarkably improved performances. Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic grew in stature last summer until they became a competitive Champions League team in the autumn. Others may do the same this season.

What will be clear long before the lottery of the European play-off rounds, is where the gaping chasm exists in Scottish football: are Celtic our only team competitive in Europe, or is there at least one other?

Neither you nor I care who competes in the Europa League, but failure there if Celtic progress to the Champions League will compound an already acute challenge for the Scottish also-rans.

  1. Foghorn Leghorn .

Not sure about the nickname chasm although that could have gone back to his youth .

His father was indeed a councillor … Lewis Docherty and one of my sons is named after him .

Progres will be looking to register their 2nd ever goal in European football next week in what would be their first ever win in 13 attempts. Watched a few videos on Talking Baws earlier, one Hun outside the crumbledome last night ‘we wont have to play teams like that every week’. No s–t Sherlock.

  3. Scaniel .

Thanks for the kind words earlier .

I caught the second half of the Scottish cup final in a bar in el Puerto de Santa Maria (near Cadiz) .

I watched the game with my Spanish brother in law and his four sons … all Betis / Celtic fans .

It was an Irish bar owned by a hun and as soon as the final whistle blew he switched over to the Arsenal game saying “ right , that’s enough of that shite “ .

We were pissing ourselves laughing .

My Spanish brother in law is nuts : he drives around Seville blaring rebel music .

Viva la quinta brigade is a particular favourite of his .

It so happened that the local (el Puerto) feria was on so we went there in the evening .

I thought I had died and gone to heaven with all of these gorgeous women in traditional Andalusian dresses and flowers in their hair .

And some of a “targetable” age if you know what I mean wink wink .

Take care and look after that lassie of yours .

Muller is the best out and out number 9 ever. Him, Pele and Cruyff were my non Celtic heroes growing up. A touching story of how Beckenbauer and Rummenige knew he was in a bad way with the drink. They met him coming off the plane from Florida, hardly recognisable, and told him Bayern were going to get him the best possible help. Beckenbauer said he was the man who transformed German football with his phenomenal goals tally for club and country. I’ve spoken to some older German guys on holiday who consider Gerd as THE biggest football star in their country, above even the Kaiser. Hope he’s still well.

  8. Good evening, friends.

A Friday lunchtime article and almost 8 hours later we’re only on Page 4! Seems like a good opportunity to post a few tunes from 2 of the most underrated Scottish and Irish singer songwriters of all time. So, some Gilbert O’Sullivan and Gerry Rafferty coming your way. You can always scroll on by…..

Both big Sellick fans by ra way ;-)

Sorry for delay in replying, real life took over.

Ross were amazing, was there with my bhoy and it was his first gig so that added to the occasion.Bit sad at the end knowing i’ll probably not get to see them again but still loved it.I’ll just go back to stalking Brown when he starts touring solo again.

  10. Now, I’m pretty sure at least 90% of us on here know that our better half is ALWAYS right. A song that captures that dillema puts our Gilbert back into a 2-1 lead….

    Why, oh why, oh why….

  11. 1 nil Germany v Spain U21 – by far the better team so far. Thought Spain would win this. Game on.

  12. mike in toronto on

great header by Germany …. but here’s a question …

why, when goalkeepers know a ball is going over their head but likely into the net, do they often bend down (as the keeper just did there)?

  13. Gilbert extends his lead with what is, sincerely and honestly, one of my top 3 songs of all time. Not only the song, but the full explanation behind it. I give you the admittedy less than humourous Alone Again (natutrally)

BTW – what I always loved about this is the structure of the lyrice – each verse is actually written in the style of a limerick…

    3 – 1 Gilbert…

Glad to see the lieges on here giving Der Bomber the credit he’s due. To my mind the greatest striker of all time. At least 2 of his greatest goals came when he was either lying or kneeling on the ground.

  15. Gerry pulls it back to 2-3 with a very early track from his days with the other Big Billy in The Humblebums. The song is Mary Skeffington but who can identidy the tune that fatures in the introduction….?

  16. We all come on here and spout our rubbish. Indeed, I’m doing that tonight!

But when push comes to show, Whatever’;s Written In Your Heart is all that matters.

An equaliser from Gerry. And only a few minutes left on the clock (thank God, I hear you say…)

  17. Jobo,

Fair play to you – not a lot would come on and post Gilbert O’sullivan songs to get the friday night party started, but i like a man who stands up to be counted.:-)

Here’s one of my favourite Irish bands.

  18. And with a last gasp winner it’s oor Gerry with Get It Right Next Time, featuring oner of my favourite verses of all time –

“You’ve gotta grow, you’ve got to learn by your mistakes

You’ve got to die a little every day just to try and stay awake.

(But) When you Believe, There’s no mountain you can’t climb!

And, if you get it wrong, you’ll get it right next time”

    Goodnight and God bless
