Europe a sideshow to league duty at Fir Park

1000

A Europa League tie against Rennes on Thursday would normally set midweek pulses racing but when Celtic have such a crucial game ahead in the fight for second place Neil Lennon has a major decision to make, does he rest players for the Motherwell game?

Sunday’s game at Fir Park is set to become one of the most important games of the season for Celtic and I’m sure Neil would prefer a clear midweek to prepare for it, but resting players, with the inherent increased chance of defeat, could further damage fragile morale.

Celtic need a confidence boosting win but they need heads focussed on beating Motherwell even more. The consequences of defeat on Thursday are unpleasant, but the consequences of defeat on Sunday are incalculable.

  1. Interesting that the STV article on how a phoenix club can play in the SPL specifically mentions no particular club. Talk about ‘don’t mention the war!’ Jeez!

    Also, worryingly, it says:

The conditions for entry are set by the SPL board, and not the representatives from the remaining 11 member clubs. The board consists of Ralph Topping (SPL chairman), Neil Doncaster (SPL chief executive), Eric Riley (Celtic), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United), Derek Weir (Motherwell) and Steven Brown (St Johnstone). Topping has the casting vote in the event of a split decision.

I thought the clubs had a vote?

Your comparisons with Brown, Lennon, etc. don’t work. Football supporters simply don’t like players who CHEAT regularly. It’s not only Celtic supporters who feel that way about Naismith.

The only sympathy you can have is that, as Awe Naw says, Naismith has been encouraged to play in this nasty way by Smith and McCoist. Smith in particular has a lot to do with the terrible decline of Scottish football. He was acclaimed for the most awful anti-football ever seen when he was manager of the Scotland team. He has influenced other managers in Scotland. Scottish football has sunk so low that Naismith is one of the best players in the country.

are you wearing wellies or waders today.

I cant feel sorry for someone who has spent so long getting away with common assault on the football pitch.

Your post made me stop and think about my gut-reaction to the Naismith (self-inflicted) injury. I can understand where you are coming from and to a certain extent I applaud your humanity.

However, having thought about it I remain of the opinion that it is good for the game’s sake that an odious character such as him is denied the opportunity to grace Scottish football fields for a while.

I would feel similar satisfaction if Billy Ray Cyrus lost his voice indefinitely and Simon Cowell succumbed to deafness (if he hasn’t already).

All for the greater good and all that.

Isn’t it ironic the man with more faces than a pack of cards……the man who assured us all he was never going to return ever again, not even once…….the man with multiple log in names……the man who always has something nice to say about the Huns and always has something negative to say about all things Celtic be it ever so subtle…………………the man who openly admires, respects and condones the cheating and insidious actions of uber Hun Steven Naismith………..the man who has been well and truly sussed on numerous occasions……………..ladies and gentlemen I give you…….drum rollvia_nirone (or is it govan)…….isn’t that right you absolute transparent Hun chancer <:-))

I wouldn’t wish injury on any player, but I don’t have any sympathy in this case either. The player in question represents everything I dislike about football.

He’s a cheat, who has been sent off after one of his many acts of simulation – and he has a nasty streak as well. The elbow in McCann’s face at Dunfermline and countless late challenges which almost always go unpunished.

Ironic he was hurt while trying to do an opponent. Only this time the media can’t scapegoat the Aberdeen player.

Rob Milsom should be thankful he just had to leave the pitch – Neil Simpson was hounded out of the country.

I was thinking of Diouf when I posted and asked myself if my thoughts applied to him. I wouldn’t mind if he retired in disgrace (and in a way this would be fine by me where Lafferty and Naismith are concerned, for example, kinda amusing), but I think I’d still hold my tongue in deference to a ruined career rather than gloat. I’d have to say that I also think his career is blighted mostly by his footballing actions – much more palatable than the likes of John Terry and some of the heinous criminals (if you believe in no smoke without copious fires) running around in an England shirts.

Anyway, we’re making some curious judgements, and failing to spot that this is sport. I applaud any and all who go at it full tilt. I played a bit, and some crazy stuff will happen on the park. Not saying it’s right, but, there it is. Also, I love to play. Adore it, and I think Naismith is a football lover too. I can only say that playing means more to me than supporting, and so I simply can’t enjoy his injury. However, in a tight league I’d be hoping this gave us the edge… that it doesn’t is another story.

    79 caps,

I don’t know if fans of other clubs wouldn’t wonder what the difference was. They all used to think Stan was a cheat, and almost everyone hated Lennon, as we all know only too well. It was wrong then and it isn’t right now, just because we think we’re right.

Caught me out again… but only because I saw you in the Ibrox creche with your mammy.

I’m pretty sure I don’t need to explain this, however, for the avoidence of doubt. I’ve used two blog names, and never hidden it. When the new blog started my first post explained the change of name. I believe I was one of hundreds to do the same. Imatim, in common with a few other bog idiots have taken my acknowledgement of this fact as an admission of … of what in fact. How do you describe this admission? I’ll maybe ponder this.

However he/she is right to note that my retirement has been relatively short lived. I even predicted that. That said, I’m not going to be around much, and I do believe this will be the last I engage with the trolls.

  18. The Honest Cover-up on

    Bontybhoy,

Are you for real mate? Essentially, a millionaire has set out to stamp on an opponent’s leg and in the process has twisted his own knee. It’s hardly “abhorent” that some posters see a certain poetic justice in that. It is not life threatening. Given today’s medical treatment it is rarely career threatening.

He will be paid more in a week than most hard working individuals earn in a year while he recuperates.

Naismith is no John Kennedy. The poor Milson, his victim, is deserving of sympathy. Though fortunately he only suffered a deep gash.

Many fans of the game will be glad that Milson and the Dunfermline lad who was elbowed will be able to play for 9 months with less threat of being stamped on or assaulted while they play.

So you get told and no rangers loving reporter has been told? Do you think there is a reason why an anti-Celtic, pro-Rangers press haven’t put the story in the paper? Could it be the guy you know isn’t telling the complete truth?

Anyone hear about what went on at Murray Park the day?

It looks like someone asked the question of what happens if a player picks up a bad injury and the Huns go in to administration. The senior player in question was told to mind his own business….cue very, very unhappy players.

Isn´t this our chance to get involved in football outside the SPL, so bemoaned by so many?
