Euros compulsive meritocracy the CL can only dream about

181

The triumphs and tragedies of Euro 2020 were great entertainment.  Although major national tournaments are won by the big countries, they have a meritocracy that Uefa’s club football tournaments lost long ago.

Contests where Switzerland can eliminate France, Hungary can terrify Germany and Denmark can reach a semi-final are compulsive.  Those of us who get our football kicks from the Champions and Europa Leagues can only dream of the level playing field where developing talent provides a remote chance of success.

Italy deserved to win the final, although Spain and France will wonder what could have been.  England had Italy on the ropes for 20 minutes, but when Kane was nullified, Gareth Southgate looked like someone whose only previous managerial experience was in charge of Middlesbrough.  The song that describes “30 years of hurt” will soon be 30 years out of date.  They will never have a better chance.

I was in London last week and was able to enjoy banter with England fans without a whiff of trouble.  They are no more represented by this morning’s headlines than Scots are represented by what happened in George Square.  The human condition has a long way to go.

  1. Most of London voted Labour matching the demographics listed earlier……..young, multi-coloured groups favouring equality and inclusion and for reducing the gap between rich and poor……

The predictable racist nonsense from last night, has buried the violence inside the stadium last night, England pitching for the World Cup in 2030….can’t have that on the telly….Blojo and his Klan have warned the media outlets, it was chaos

In our history we have had some incredible Swedish players, Henke. PC Lustig and Big Johan Mjällby (would not like a slap on the lug fae him, did you see the recent picture of him), passing mentions to Freddie Ljungberg and big Daniel Majstorović

However, this is my own personal non playing Swede 🙂

    I hope you enjoy

Has Dom agreed to inherit a baked-in strategy ?

You know, the one where we see if we can sneak thru the early quallies with the existing playing pool – before feeling financially emboldened enough to actually purchase much needed players?

Course, it could be that every player we’ve spoken to is resisting joining until he sees if he’s gunna get advanced European football as part of his employment package. If the club don’t tell us, we’ll never know.

Disappointed if Mat Ryan chose a highly enriched Mediterranean lifestyle as a backdrop for his football career, over a highly risky move to a 9IAR x 2 and 4×3 award winning team.

Are we still as big a draw as we think we are ?

Ironic that our cry was (still) no defenders. HH

BBC’s Emma Vardy reported tonight that burning bonfires with Kill All Taigs messages “can be contentious”.

    Nice one BBC.

  7. Didn’t appreciate our PR Departments silly comment about our new Home Kit…….” It’s coming home”

Cheap shot, unecessary and very badly timed.

  8. Never thought that American television would ever be able to follow up or even improve upon

Sons of Anarchy, but slowly but surely, via series 1-2 and now 3, ‘Mayans MC’ (Southern California) has convinced me otherwise. Top television. And for those of us who remember Miami Vice early 1980s, and even Battlestar Galactica, great to see Captain Castilla aka the great Edward James Olmos, now Felipe Reyes, father of both Angel and EZ still on our screens. If perchance you have somehow missed late nite TV of the highest order, BBCi player is there for you, or BBC2 next weekend. Get on board a Harley D…..

AN TEARMANN Thanks for letting us know about the sad passing of Macjay. The ads have been locking me out of CQN so I rarely come on these days. I met John and his wife many years ago when I was over in Oz for work. We shared a few beers, stories and tales. We were of different eras and different politics but John was a real Celtic man, and family man and he valued the friendships he made on CQN. Rest In Peace John. I will raise a glass to Macjay.

  10. Sláinte Ange on

It seems that certain posters are demanding instant signings citing the imminence of CL qualifiers, at the same time ignoring quarantine requirement for players from overseas.

Ange strikes me as a guy who will only sign players who he feels will buy into the way he wants Celtic to play. This is not “dithering” ~ it is called due diligence.

  11. Sláinte

I think you are mixing up 2 or 3 different arguments there.

Clearly there are quarantine rules to be observed and we are now too late to bring anyone from overseas before the European campaign.

Equally, our new man is relatively new and will still be getting to grips with things.

However, as a club, we have dithered. If we consider the utter shambles of last season, and the time since our last permanent manager left, it is an absolute dereliction of corporate duty that we find ourselves here today.

25 points behind in the league last season and we have failed to strengthen in any meaningful way. I would suggest the current squad is weaker than that which capitulated last season.

    A shocking state of affairs.

The clock didn’t start when Ange entered the building. It has been ticking, ominously, for many many months now. When posters talk of ‘patience ‘they need to be clear as to their timeline. What is their reference point? Their start date?

  12. Sláinte Ange on

    Uncle Jimmy

Thank you for your considered reply. There is no disputing any of the points you make. For me, the timeline began when Ange was first in situ and will end when the 2021/22 league has been won. Any European progress this season will be a bonus for mainly financial reasons. I would expect to see significant improvement in Europe in season 2022/23.

  13. Good morning cqn from a very clammy and overcast Garngad

4 days to the afternoon tea party. 👍

Watching the news and how disgusting is it that in 2021 we have morons who use social media to racially abuse those young England players who missed their pens.

Of course any form of abuse as we know only to well living here in KKK land is incredible in 2021.

How easy would it be for social media platforms to set parameters on their platforms. ffs we can fly people to the moon but cannot stop arseholes abusing people on the internet.

    Disgusting

In my opinion there has been a vast dereliction of duty for several

months now by the board but for sure one person totally blameless is Ange

He is our manager now and deserves our full support and hope he

gets it from every true Celtic fan

I will be travelling by Megabus as I need to be in Glasgow for midday-ish. See you there!

  16. Sláinte

My own view is pretty similar. Ange is our manager and cannot be blamed for the sins of the Father.

I would hope to see improvements in a number if areas this season, though I suspect next season is more realistic for tangible results.

    The fightback starts here!

  17. We seemingly are waiting on selling Ajer and Eddie before spending anything of note. Players sold since January look to have possibly helped fill the covid financial hole in the accounts.

Very frustrating but not surprising given how late we were in appointing Ange and making preparations for the season.

So we’ve got the same players, same assistant manager and same first team coach.

Ange better be a miracle worker…

Our board of used car salesmen have known for months the extent of the rebuild we face yet still sit on their hands and do nothing. Very good at asking for money for season tickets and new strips though. You would think think we have lots of gullible supporters…..

    LOL.

To anyone who is intending to appear on Friday, IF you arrive a bit early in Glasgow before the kick off at 2pm….I will probably be in the Pub around 1pm…just to conduct a bit of Beer tasting of course !

The Engerlund squad should have stayed in Rome after the beat the Ukraine…it was their best chance of seeing the EURO Trophy…LOL !

Last week after their semi final win…Lineker was nearly wetting himself on TV when he announced that the EURO Trophy was ALREADY at Wembley….They just NEVER Learn do they ?

My concern is that he does not have available to him the resources required to build what the fans want.

For the moment it’s open to speculation whether he knew that when accepting the job, but if he did then he has started off burdened by original sin (if that’s still a thing, it’s hard to keep up, especially since Father Ted stopped airing.)
