Euros compulsive meritocracy the CL can only dream about

181

The triumphs and tragedies of Euro 2020 were great entertainment.  Although major national tournaments are won by the big countries, they have a meritocracy that Uefa’s club football tournaments lost long ago.

Contests where Switzerland can eliminate France, Hungary can terrify Germany and Denmark can reach a semi-final are compulsive.  Those of us who get our football kicks from the Champions and Europa Leagues can only dream of the level playing field where developing talent provides a remote chance of success.

Italy deserved to win the final, although Spain and France will wonder what could have been.  England had Italy on the ropes for 20 minutes, but when Kane was nullified, Gareth Southgate looked like someone whose only previous managerial experience was in charge of Middlesbrough.  The song that describes “30 years of hurt” will soon be 30 years out of date.  They will never have a better chance.

I was in London last week and was able to enjoy banter with England fans without a whiff of trouble.  They are no more represented by this morning’s headlines than Scots are represented by what happened in George Square.  The human condition has a long way to go.

  1. Well said Tyrone Mings – Johnson and Patel are the ones guilty of gesture politics and quick sound bites.

I agree that it is speculative to consider whether the backroom team decision was agreed pre appointment or was flexible.

For me, the many scenarios for the latter are too unlikely as to pass the reasonability test.

I can’t get past the first one – what conversation could Ange have had with his ‘potential recruits’ before taking up the post?

That’s even before we consider the criteria against which he was to assess the incumbent team and the timescales for any decision.

The whole thing is too far fetched for me and the only logical conclusion I can come up with is that the continuation of our backroom team was agreed at interview and selection.

  3. we knew we needed a new manager in September. A new set up too was on cards. Now we have a manager parachuted in at last minute with no knowledge of footballers in europe. So who is meant to buy new players? No effort made to try to win first european game. so we have given that up for season. Will they hand Huns title too? looks like they want to. i imagine they will get a few loan players from usual sources before first league game.. with usual excuses… difficult to get players to come to Scotland.. broke down at last minute etc. … we are far weaker than last season and that was bad enough. we have taylor Turnbull Calmac, Soro Ajeti, and maybe Forrest if he is available to play. Thats it! rest will be players who have almost no experience or have proved they are not good enough. of course we could play Eddie Christie etc..i am sure they will try as hard as last season!

My gut feeling is that the club ie Peter Lawwell found BR’s presence, and the manner of his departure just too much to handle, too high profile, too powerful, and too disruptive, so that way of doing things has been rejected. Instead we have backroom staff whose first loyalty is to the CEO and a manager on his own who is cheap and easy to fire should that prove necessary.

It’s not a recipe for success. But that doesn’t seem to be much of a priority.

We have known for months that Brown, Elyounoussi and Kenny would need replaced . Not one of them has .

Do you also think that Ange had any input with the decisions to sign SW boys and sanction contracts for Ralston and Griffiths

  6. In the past few seasons we have been taken apart by so called “lesser teams”

None had superstars and a few had no known names. They simply worked as a TEAM and followed their managers/coaches tactics and instructions. Simple stuff.

I have a feeling the board are relying totally on Anges tactical nous with no requirements for so called “stars”

While Matt Ryan is packing his bags for Sociadad and Vuscovic is packing his for Feyenoord , we can console ourselves with the signing of a Watford academy prospect .

Meanwhile , 45,000 season ticket holders squirm nervously in their seats ……..

  8. We must be favourites to win the Lowland league with all these woderkids that we are signing.

Great day for your birthday Davie.

Hope to see you soon my friend.

  10. Just listening to a steward on Talksport who was working at Wembley on Sunday from the morning onwards. According to him, there was way more than 70,000 in the stadium before kick-off, which if true means that 10,000 plus got in without tickets. Now it hard to judge from watching on TV how big the crowd was but it certainly seemed to be more than two thirds full. Not overcrowded as such, but crowd pressure in some areas, ticket holders unable to access their seats. Throw in all day drinking, or drinking all day and a recipe for near disaster. These are the kinds of events that will literally scare off football supporting families from attending in the future. But England “fans” are not alone in this respect, Rangers supporters set the template in George Square, not once, but twice, and the behaviour of the drink fuelled “Tartan Army” in Leicester Sq (and Covent Garden) just three weeks ago was little or no different from those of English supporters in Central London throughout Sunday. As in not pretty. Truth to tell if I could have got a ticket for the Scotland – England game I would have been there, but maybe just as well there wasn’t a 90,000 plus crowd around that particular Friday night, and whoever else could have got themselves in.

    I feel the same

But its the same story every year

the reality is celtic can talk to who they like and offer a contract

But most (if they are any good) will hang on to see what other offers they get

It’s a muck stinking world buying footballers

or as is more commonly known it’s a Agents World

Don’t hold your breath – long season ahead

    hail hail

I hope that the time being taken to make new signings, is because we are looking at players that Ange Postecoglou has identified to fit his system. If so, I am prepared to be patient.

Think that Liam Shaw is a cracker.

Looks a great signing thus far.

  16. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Hi DD – agree re: Shaw – looked big, fast and skillful from the two pre-season games.

We do need experience injected into the squad – the worry is we are taking the same gambles as we always do. Risking millions to save thousands.

Speak for yourself- I did not renew on the promise of a new bling Centre Forward.

I wanted to see the Celtic and they will be there.

That does not mean that I don’t value good recruitment, just that it is not why I bought the SB and it never has been.

  18. just re-ordered the new home top and used my voucher

couple of things to pass on.

    1. it asks for the voucher number and pin at basket stage but this doesn’t do anything. I asks again just before you pay. I put it in both times to make sure

    2. If you live in Ireland, like me, the site knows due to your login details. It has got the calcs wrong this time and has reduced the price to go to Euros instead of increasing it. As such, i got the top for £54.17 minus £50

i checked the price without logging in (assumes UK) and it came up as £65

So, if you live in Ireland – fill yer boots (may work in other countries too)

  19. Apparently there are rules:-

    ————————————

Kilmarnock face a disciplinary hearing after including an ineligible player in their squad for last weekend’s win over East Kilbride.

Killie welcomed Daniel Armstrong into their matchday list of players during their trip to K-Park for their Premier Sports Cup clash on Saturday.

But now it has been revealed the 23-year-old had been subject of a one-match suspension in the competition.

The SPFL have confirmed they will investigate the Rugby Park outfit’s mistake and take action.

Armstrong played just under 20 minutes of the game having come on in the 72nd minute of Killie’s 2-0 win in Group G.
