Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

I admire your posts tonight and you’ve help fill me with a bit of optimism. I was at a CSC night on Friday (Patricia Ferns was singing) there was a projector set-up with various GB photos. There was one of the GB Banners saying “Neil Lennon You’ll Never Walk Alone” – that also gave me a lift.

I then went to the game on Saturday and witnessed a very lacklustre performance from the players, and if I’m honest Lenny.

I so so so want him to succeed and be a successful Celtic manager. I would love him to manage us for the next 20 years successfully. I loved him as a player and have really enjoyed what he brought as manager last season and before.

Last December when we drew 3 home games I thought the league was over, but was still happy with Lenny, he was showing passion and there were signs that his team wasn’t too far away. Then we went on an amazing run sparked by humping the huns in their own backyard. What Lenny went through after and before that is nothing short of disgusting and the Scottish media as well as the footballing authorities have a lot to answer for those dark dark days.

This season despite me giving Lenny 100% support, I don’t see the same Lenny. I don’t see that same passion – I commented on it after the agm, I am genuinely concerned that all the atrocious things he subjected to last year are taking their toll. Now, more than ever he needs our support, irrespective what happens as a team, he is one of us. The players must also show support.

We can all do this with our actions at games. Remember the “I am Neil Lennon” on here? The masks? NL You’ll Never Walk Alone?

Remember those? These all happened less than 6 months ago. Lenny hasn’t lost knowledge of football or how to put out a team in that time. He needs support, not only of the people around him and as many have suggested “an older head”, he needs our support, more than ever.

Now is not the time to change our manager, when he needs our help most. Now is the time to roll the sleeves up as SUPPORTERS and give Lenny the support he NEEDS.

Lighten the mood, a hard thing to do mi amigo, oh how I wish it was within my powers to lighten the mood.

We all live it our own way, we all live with the highs and lows our own way, me all I want is for our club to be united, united in our own way.

Void of all the bullshit, void of all the plc or the manager or the players are to blame, we are the the club, let us be the club, I honestly believe we will be having a say sometime soon, just a wee feeling somewhere in the darkest recesses.

  4. neil lennon did not win the title last year and we all stood by him, he had the whole season to do it and failed. this season was a must win, he is failing again. these are facts. i love neil lennon but that does not make him guaranteed to succeed. how long do we give him?? i would like to see a manager there that can demand more from the board. managment is not easy, you need to do what you can to get results. neil lennon should have been demanding the board to buy the players we needed in the summer to win the league back. if he was and was rejected he should have let the fauns know about it… we needed a big cf and one more ch… everyone could see it

Thank Heaven you came along to shake me out of my stupor.

Me I will try to stick to discussing Celtic wether it be rumour innuendo or fact negative or positive and see no shame in bringing to the forum what is being discussed and dissected by the majority of the Celtic support who do not feel they have to be a member of a blog to make the a real supporter

    ============

Now let’s see how this works.

I heard that Mickybhoy1888 is a transsexual ladyboy with legs to die for (if you like that kinda thing) but still has bits that “allegedly” he only displays in specialised magazines.

Is that how this rumour, innuendo etc. thing works??? Anybody else heard this. Some taxi driver told me all about it. So it must be true.

There was a lot of talk from our own fans last year that contributed to the “he brings it on himself” narrative.

Posters were calling on him to tone down the touch line antics and to portray a more “dignified” example”. I think the tabloid portrayal of a snarling, vicious, borderline thug, worked on our consciousness too. Neil, being respectful of our traditions, has tried to accommodate that demand too.

At a time when he is trying to gee up a fragile team and get them to block out our home crowd, in particular, he has to be mindful of demands that he does not get too agitated and does not attract refereeing attention.

It gets hard to square that circle. You need a degree of animation to communicate to the players (and, maybe, the crowd) but you have been warned to tone down the reactions by our management, fussy fans, police and politicians.

No wonder it gets confusing. If I had the opportunity to provide any advice to Neil it would be that he needs to get that siege mentality going amongst the players (don’t depend on our fans to lift the team, just work for each other against all the elements ranged against you)

I am not stupid. I know that more bad results at the wrong time, and there’s rarely a right time for bad results, will heap pressure that may not be resisted. A promising managerial debut might be cut short and no amount of rhetoric or level-headed presentation of Neil’s record, will stand scrutiny against a venting mob.

I hope and pray that we do not become that kind of club that sacrifices managers in a wasteful way in a rush towards quick fixes. I have been preaching that same message since WGS arrived and was met with a wall of phrophecies and predictions of failure from our support.

Fear that their tin pot empire is not as secure as their hubristic minds so arrogantly assumed.

Fear that every court appearance was one more nail in the coffin of their ” we are above the Law ” stance..

Fear that their lackadaisical approach to the procedures required by natural justice is being exposed for all to see.

Fear that the likes of Platini are simply not up to the demands of facing a sharp lawyer in a Court setting.

Fear that other clubs will be emboldened by Sion’s achievements in dragging UEFA through the Courts..

    Entirely agree!

Too many too quick to jump on the bandwagon, it does get really difficult to continue to defend as more and more are against your point of view. I really took heart from your posts tonight that there is many of us that love Celtic, go to games and try and support both Lenny and his team through a very difficult period.

The negativity on here does get to me, as I see replicated at the stadium, we have enough enemies to be negative about our team.

I do understand people questioning selctions/tactics etc but the out and out negativity is shocking. People changing their blog name to incorporate the sacking of our manager – that is not the Celtic way and certainly doesn’t reflect the Celtic family I am part of.

Thank you and many others on here for the positive and/or constructive posts. Posts where even if there is a feeling Lenny won’t work, there is sensible suggestions on an alternative or how he could be helped. Not a mindless get rid of the manager as increasingly seems to be a popular opinion. It is very easy to rip holes in something, it is far more difficult filling those holes.

  16. Vile bigot who spouted sectarian bile at Celtic boss Neil Lennon begs Barlinnie bosses for protection

    Oct 31 2011 Paul O’Hare

A VICIOUS bigot jailed for spouting sectarian bile towards Celtic boss Neil Lennon on a Facebook hate page has begged prison bosses for protection.

Vile Stephen Birrell, 28, is being kept under supervision within C Hall of Glasgow’s tough Barlinnie prison, normally reserved for remand inmates.

In a desperate phone call days after being locked up, shaven-headed Birrell – who once slashed his pregnant girlfriend with a machete – said he feared for his safety.

Isobel Hughes, 26, (pictured, with Birrell) remained with himl, despite the brutal assault four years ago, said: “He knows he is a marked man and he is scared.

“He told me the cons not only read about the Neil Lennon abuse, they also saw the story in the Daily Record about his attack on me, so he has been warned to keep his head down.

“Celtic fans want to get at him and other cons are after him. They think he’s a coward for hitting a pregnant woman with a machete.”

She said: “He told me he is under supervision in C Hall and he is terrified.”

Birrell was handed an eight-month sentence earlier this month for the internet offences.

On March 1, Birrell went to a page called Neil Lennon Should Be Banned and wrote: “Hope they all die. Simple. Catholic scumbags ha ha.”

Birrell, who the court heard has a Catholic mother, returned to the page, three days later, just after the explosive Old Firm Scottish Cup replay at Celtic Park. This time, he wrote: “Proud to hate Fenian tattie farmers. Simple, ha ha.”

Four days later, Birrell wrote: “They’re all ploughing the fields the dirty scumbags. FTP and the ‘Tic. WATP. No Surrender..”

And 30 minutes later, he ranted about “Fenian b*****ds who have f*** all else to do than talk s**t”.

Birrell was caught in a police probe into internet hate speech, launched in the wake of the Celtic Park “shame game”.

When he was arrested at his Glasgow home, he told officers: “It’s the f****** Facebook s***e to do with Neil Lennon.”

Birrell admitted breach of the peace by posting religiously prejudiced abuse.

He appeared for sentence in a white tracksuit top, carrying his belongings in a plastic bag.

Glasgow sheriff Bill Totten told Birrell he wanted to send a “clear message” that right thinking Scots would not tolerate such crimes.

He reduced the sentence from 12 months because of the thug’s guilty plea.

Birrell was also given a football banning order to stop him attending any game in the UK for five years.

who couldn’t name you one of their players, want only one thing.

To get rid of our uppity Fenian manager, who won’t take it on the chin from them.

To keep him in place, win or lose the league, (i still say we will win it)

Thanks for link to Brogan, Rogan, Trevino and Hogan’s very enlightening piece on Rangers and especially pleased to see Celtic are preparing battle lines.

Neil Lennon’s pointed comments to the media about under-performing players was unfortunate and unnecessary and I’m sure in retrospect he’ll have regretted them. It’s two days before our next game and I hope the work on the training ground included bridge building where bridge building needed to be made and honest discussions where honest discussions were needed and all parties agreeing to approach the coming games with a shared sense of purpose and direction. For although there has been a slight shift away from the hero worship of Neil Lennon he still enjoys considerable support, the players need to understand they are CELTIC and collectively they will also be held to account in any failure.

We’ll see over the next few matches if the players rhetoric about playing for Celtic and loving the fans and atmosphere was indeed just lip-service or true commitment to the cause. Neil Lennon has nothing to prove in that respect.

Fine morning in PA2, move to G77 this week, hope the weather is as good if not better there.

  22. Paddy Turner.

Sorry i can’t agree. On Thursday we need our best team to put on a performance that proclaims the club’s unity of purpose.

We need this team to start believing in themselves and play with a commitment that makes them first to every loose ball and see them winning every 50/50 challenge. From a tactical point of view I would like to see a few changes with us dropping of the zonal defence at corners and the midfield moving the ball to the forwards earlier.

  23. Normally I’d agree with you’re post but

    1) NL needs to make it clear to those that are under performing that they will lose they’re place if they give anything less than 100% and

    2) the Europa is a distraction from the main event, the SPL, I’d play the Europa game as a preparation game for Thursday, let’s see a couple of the young uns play against Rennes with the carrot of winning a place in the team, even if it’s as a sub against the well.
