FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

Hello Adelaide! Lisbon went very much to plan although we hadn’t budgetedfor Inter Milan getting a seventh minute penalty! But thatactually workedin our favour because they retreated into defence and that gave us the chance to get at them. Assoon as I scored I knew we wouldwin. The Italiansjust didn’t have ananswer to us that day. Mind you,I’m not being big-headed when Isay this, but not many teamswould have livedwith Celtic in that mood.

Hello Minneapolis! I’ve just mentioned the crowd invasion in Lisbon. For me, it didn’t spoil the occasion.

Those supporters had been through a lot as Celtic fans and they just erupted with joy.

Yes, I played as an old-fashioned centre-forward in one of the American tour games in 1966. I badgered Big Jock into it.

It was a game against the local footballers, so I wasn’t really tested. I scored a hat-trick, but was always more at home at full-back.

Yes, it was a special goal against Inter Milan, but I’m not sure I want it to bring tears to your eyes when you watch the footage!

Just enjoy it – I know I did. And still do!

The score of 2-1 against Inter Milan obviously didn’t reflect our superiority, but no-one was complaining, I can assure you.

If we had scored six goals people may have thought it was a walkover against second-rate opponents and that wasn’t the case.

Sorry, missed the last part of your question.

Yes, Jim Craig was a very good dentist compared to a footballer.

I haven’t read that particular book, but it’s good to get a mention. Actually, no-one ever needed to read books on tactics at Celtic because we had Big Jock to guide us through football’s minefield!

How do you think the team you played in would fair ob todays bowling green pitches?

Thank you for the kind words and I can say your dad was a good judge of a footballer. Bobby Murdoch was an exceptional talent. He could do anything with that ball at his feet. I think I’ve said this before, but his vision was simply awesome.

It was a privilege to share a football pitch with that man.

    Mr Gemmell,

Did you prefer playing on rain sodden muddy pitches or was the smooth billiard-like parks, bathed in sunshine more to your liking? And did you think it was vital, when you woke up on a match day, to stick your head through the curtains and see what the weather was like? ;-)

May I end by wishing you many more years of good health and happiness.

Hi Tommy, did you or any of the others in the team regret playing the third game against Racing Club , not taking into account the £250 each Celtic player was fined, but because they did everything they could to stop Celtic playing football.

Thanks for all the special memories I have of you and what you gave to all Celtic fans,

Rangers were the establishment club back in the day and possibly they got the odd break.

However,. there was nothing any could do when Celtic really impacted on the scene. I take your point, though.
