Fifa fines. Well, this is awkward

249

It will surprise none of you that Fifa degreed the poppy to be an inappropriate political symbol for a football shirt, or to be paraded at a game. We’ve been slightly ahead of the game in Scotland, where the innocuous symbol which was conceived to raise money to aid destitute, often debilitated, former servicemen eat and live, has transformed into a symbol of pseudo-nationalism.

When you politicise the poppy you rob it of its universality. Today’s symbol is lesser because of this that those sold in previous decades. You can argue what political symbols are right and wrong if you have time to waste, but what is now beyond dispute is that in Britain, we pick and choose what political symbols are regarded as appropriate for football games.

Fifa and Uefa indulge in no such ambiguity.

Delighted at news that we will rest more players tonight. It will have the result of recharging some deflated batteries as well as giving opportunity to players who will benefit from the game.

Everybody that supported Celtic in the past suspected we were playing against a stacked deck. If anything that heightened the passion of the supporters.

We now know that for a number of years towards the end of their life that was definitely true.

We also know that rules have been mangled to allow the new club to leap frog their way back into the league system.

I genuinely can’t recall from all the discussions at that time whether we alone could have vetoed the 5-way agreement (let’s leave our level of involvement aside for one second). I’m of the opinion that even if we couldn’t we would have influenced it enough to make it happen.

However, let’s say they couldn’t and perhaps they had sounded out the other clubs and knew the will to force a start from the bottom wasn’t there. The only remaining step was to withdraw from the league entirely and die.

Let me reiterate, I don’t think the club were that opposed to the 5-way agreement (if at all) but I also don’t think they could ever have ensured there would be no more RFC/TRFC/ whatever as some do.

My point, which I totally failed to make. is that part of the make up of being a Celtic supporter in the past was that we were doing it despite everything that was thrown against us, or towards them.

Perhaps removing that sense of injustice will end up being the death of us. Who knows.

  5. So reading Phil’s blog, the safety certificate holder is responsible for notifying the council if there are issues, would you trust them to do so?

  6. Looking forward to the Glasgow derby tonight, hopefully see some cracking football with a sprinkling of the next crop of talented youngsters trying to fulfil their dream of pulling on the hoops.

Gonna spend a small fortune in the club shop and the Kerrydale Suite. Should help offset the freeloaders who steal money from their fellow Celtic fans by watching illegal Celtic TV streams and then bitch about the board trying to maximise our revenue.

God bless Dermot Desmond for saving the club in 94.

God bless Peter Lawwell for overseeing the death of Rangers.

God bless them both for bringing in Brendan Rodgers.

God bless Brendan Rodgers for the tremendous work he’s done so far.

Long may the 3 of them continue to reign in Paradise.

For it’s a grand old team to play for…

  7. With regards to tonight’s game , and the proposed changes to the team . I hope brendan rodgers Took note of where the dangers came from a couple of weeks ago against thistle , and plays big jozo to deal with high balls into our box . We lost a goal from a cross ball , and another goal from a cross ball which fortunately was ruled offside .

I don’t think I ever decided to follow Celtic because I felt they were the team being cheated.

LNS and the five way agreement although suspicions are that Celtic were involved at some level I haven’t yet seen proof of this.

However, our PLC’s determination to stall, obfuscate etc on Res12 is becoming more apparent by the meeting with the Requisitioner’s that it is in my mind without question now that they are Celtic Rangers loving OLD FIRM fans and more than likely were party to LNS and tjhe 5 way agreement.

Anyway, it’s not for me no more after this season. I hope others can still take some joy from it knowing that in time our PLC will pucky them up to a level were they will compete again allied with the cheating of the SFA and win the league, cups, CL place at our expense and that can again be joyfully celebrated as an OLD FIRM success.

  13. Hope young Miller gets a run out tonight.

The few times i have seen him he looks to have game intelligence and outstanding crossing ability.

Dembeles goals have dried up due to poor service as injuries to KT.JF and Sinclair took their toll.

Also would rather Ajer took Bittons place in the squad.

  14. JIMTIM

Thistles attack was based on long high balls over our short defense.

Jozo and Dembele are both needed to defend free kicks.

  15. Tonight I’ll cheer a few Celtic goals hopefully, but if anyone from the Board scores I’ll booooooooooooooooooooooooo:-)

Serious note now, has the board met with the Requisitioners or made an announcement?

I haven’t been on much lately and seem to have missed something, I’d appreciate a wee update or a direct to where to find it.

    Thanks.

  17. MacJay,

Re-your post last night about the PLC not pursuing Res12 due to a possible fear of a Sevco backlash…By that logic there would be no point in playing them at all we might as well give them a walk over in the forthcoming matches.

Nah, the PLC don’t give a hoot who gets harmed, imo. They had a chance to clean up the game but went for the easy money…The tried and tested earner of the ‘Old Firm.’

    I hope you’re well:)

I don’t think I said it was the sole reason, but I do think it became part of it for many.

It was really just something that struck me in reading all the stuff on the board.

I don’t care what anybody says though, I heard enough people in the lower west corner say they missed Rangers games to know that Brendan Rodgers wasn’t the only reason we’re full this season.

Anyway, I’m not here to convince you otherwise, you know your own mind.

  20. Doc,

Yes they had the much discussed meeting last week and it was a case of ‘don’t call us we’ll call you’ it seems.

It’s all on the last thread.

I’m surprised you missed the blanket coverage.:)

  21. Thistle should have beat Hearts on Saturday and were unlucky recently when deidco beat them by the odd goal in 3, kinda stating the obvious here but we all know Thistle in spite on their poor league position are more than capable of giving us a hard game tonight. So why then change the team about – again – and possibly pitch in some rookies from the Academy squad?

The longer the unbeaten run goes on the more nervous the team are becoming. BR is well aware of that and tonight he has the opportunity to get the monkey of his back (before we head to Ibrox) by putting out another experimental line up – and if we do get beat then so what, we’ll still win the league anyway. Great position to be in.

  22. I don’t support the board; I support whoever is wearing the Celtic strip, home, away or 3rd one.

I’ll tell you a wee story, my da like most of our da’s on here was a great Celtic mhan but he had no time for the board, even back then, and don’t forget where David Kelly father of our first captain settled when he came over from Ireland, the Irish Catholic Community was very close knit back then and prominent in the Irish Land League, no matter what he still had no time for the Kelly’s who were still well-known in the area at the time and in whose pub he used tae drink.

I like a lot of you as well as a lhad loved tae play the game, was average at best but still loved being out there on the park, which was generally on a Saturday so my following the bhoys as a teenager was based on availability of games not clashing with my own.

One Saturday morning I found myself with a free afternoon so decided tae go up the toon shopping, primarily tae pick up “Freewheelin”. We had a home game with the buddies but for some reason I decided tae forego it. A bit strange looking back as we had been playing quite well at the time, including a rare 3-1 going on 5 humphin of deidco, a game I was actually at and were slated tae play them the following Saturday in the LC Final.

We had only lost one significant game; the other 2 were a meaningless but truly brutal LC sectional game at Rugby Park where we finished with 9 men as both Big Billy and Chopper were stretchered off and yet only lost tae a penalty and last minute goal tae the eventual champions who incidentally were managed by a future deidco manager also known for suggesting that when the huns lost their fans went home and “gave their wives a bashing”, and a 1st leg tie at Methil only 4 days after gubbing the huns, it was typical Celtic back then. We did win the return easily with Stevie grabbing a nap hand, funny enough I was at that one as it was midweek.

The game we lost was at swinecastle and due to injury and illness a makeshift team took to the field with the wee mhan being played at inside left while young Tommy Curley in his only 1st team game for the club came in at outside right even though he was actually an inside forward, former captain Dunky Mackay made his last appearance for the bhoys before departing to the Hi Hi replacing Ian Young who had moved to centre half in place of the convalescing John Cushley who had been deputising for the injured Billy.

We soon got back on the winning way including easily dispatching Portuguese side Leixoes Matosinhos in the UEFA Cup who we had tied 1-1 in the away leg even though we finished with only 9 men, Ian Young and Stevie being ordered off ??? and both Luggy and Charlie Gallagher ended the game with bite marks, shades of AM 10 years later.

David Frier (who used tae write on the Big Lhist, in fact might still do) lecturer in Portuguese at Leeds University in a report in the Diario de Lisboa, stated Celtic were brutal and displayed a level of teamwork equivalent to that of a Portuguese second-division team. Who needs enemies right enough.

Again the return was a brutal game with the wee mhan being subjected tae several outrageous tackles and the english referee threatening tae abandon the game if the Portuguese did not stop their theatrics, they would finish the game with 8 men as 3 of them “limped” of the park histrionically much tae the amusement of the Jungle while we played the 2nd half with 10 men, Charlie Gallacher could not resume after the restart with an ankle injury.

Never took tae Portuguese sides for all the talent they have, up there with the argies.

And so we marched on with a fine victory up at the pen before a week later facing St Mirren at Parkheid in what would be loan player Irish international Joe Haverty’s one and only appearance in the hoops.

As I said earlier I had decided tae forego this game and was waiting at Alexandria Station when the strains of Hail Hail came from the troops entering the platform.

After sharing their kerry oot Mr Zimmerman’s 3rd album was forsaken for the game. I was easily led, although I blame it on the wine © big Rod.

It was a fairly easy win for us, and augured well for the following Saturday’s final, against a decent buddies side which included Jim Clunie who had played against us for the sheep 10 year earlier in our double winning cup final, he was also the first player to be substituted in a Scottish match, when he was replaced by a young archie gemmell (who incidentally would wander around the Dalmuir Flats construction site with deidco colours on during his time at Love Street) who also played that day and a young future Celt Henry Quinn as well as wee Jinkys upcoming sparring partner at hades tottie beck.

Wee story about the latter, he was allegedly the buddies highest paid player and no that really good, in an effort tae get him aff the payroll it seems that a deal was made tae rezone land in Renfrewshire to allow Scotland’s largest private house builder to increase his inventory and in return his sporting division would take the Icelander off the local teams hands.

On the return journey the train was full of happy Celts and we were quite boisterous in a non-sectarian and clean language way. As we were the first in the compartment boarding at brigton we would be joined by shoppers at High Street (the Barras) and Queen Street.

One lady, and I use that name lightly, with a wee lassie in tow gave us an earful as she alighted at Scotstounhill and a couple of stations later we were removed by Clydebank’s finest at Dalmuir.

The upshot was we were being charged with a breach of the peace and since I was under age had to wait for the local police to do that in front of my parents.

This occurred on a Monday night as I was getting ready for evening classes at Stowe College, the sergeant at the request of my da gave me a lift tae Balloch Station impressing upon me “if you fly with the craws you’ll get shot with them”, meanwhile my mother was enroute tae her big brother, googybhoy’s da, who was a JP at the time for legal advice.

That night when I came home my da was waiting up for me, no a bad wee player in his day he practiced keepy uppy with me up and doon the lobby going nuts about singing rebel songs on the train. One comment I’ll always remember as I shielded my heid was “do you think Bob Kelly will pay your fine for you”.

And that’s about the gist of it; while we may sing and dance and promise to follow the bhoys anywhere never letting them down, do the board really care.

BTW the JP at Clydebank Town Hall fined us a pound each and asked if we wanted time tae pay, he was smiling as he said it. Love the capital of Timdom.

Oh and once again honest mistakes played a part in the LC Final which sent us into a tailspin for 5 months until the Latter Day Christ returned and even then he was allegedly advised by oul Bob that there were things that would occur outwith our control and we should just let them go and move on to which he seemingly replied “aye that’ll be right”.

Finally, never brought the polis tae the door again but 52 years and platinum hair later my stomach will still be in knots approaching ko time this afternoon. Tae paraphrase the wee mhan fae Elderslie “tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take away our love for the Celts”.

  23. Oh yes.

    Home for Christmas with family.

And a wee brief for tonight sat waiting for me on the sideboard.

    Perfect.

    Hail Hail,

    KevinBhoy.

  24. Clogher Celt, thanks, I’ve had a few busy days and didn’t get on here much. I’ll read back on the on the way to the game.
