All it takes to make you feel less like you live in a leper colony is to watch European football and realise that problems of racism are not confined to Scotland or England. I don’t know if many care in Hungary how their fans looked against England, going by the standard M.O. here, you suspect some will blame the media for highlighting that hoary old lie, the “tiny minority”.
The media and politicians certainly have a role in publicising racism, or covering it up, as has often been the case around these parts. Memories of the 2011 League Cup Final stand out in particular, a moment when political affirmation of racist conduct pivoted behaviour in the stands that remains to this day.
This problem has touched every club but seldom been an issue for Celtic, you would literally need to go back decades. When an incident happened in the 80s, fans took responsibility, which drew a clear line of what was acceptable, observed ever since. Prevarication does not work as well.
Football is set to return to our stands and TVs this weekend. We will see the results of prevarication.

My team had the option of Forrest (if fit) to give Abada a rest, though he didn’t get off the bench for Israel in either of their games.
Welsh and Montgomery played only the one game and are young players quick to recover.

Of course the Tory position in Scotland is hopelessly compromised by their different voting intentions in the UK parliament.
But both Scottish Labour and the Lib Dems have made clear that their vote against was not a vote against Never having Covid vaccination passports but stressed that passports alone (and a lax attitude to masks) are not enough for what we are facing. Without a test and trace system worthy of the name, all of this will provide partial cover, probably no more than 50%, until we get top up doses.
The Scottish Government has yet again aped the behaviour of the Westminster parliament it so despises and is placing all its chips on vax passports. In doing so, it has let the Tory govt. in London off the hook again on its main failure area of totally messing up the testing procedures which are so poor currently and only served to enrich donors to the Tory Party.
We need, more than ever, all three legs of the policy, A high level of vaxxing, higher enforcement and availability of better quality masks, and a testing procedure which is accurate and not wildly punitive.
On top of that we need to change the on/off approach to lockdown and allow a constant level of socially distanced social intercourse which does not involve going from one week of allowing 500 to attend and the next week 60k are ok to attend.
We can cope with a few hold out non-vaxxers and we don’t need to make them social lepers because we have already shown we have enough people willing to build up our herd and hybrid immunities, and our young people have as much sense as us. All evidence suggests that they too will vaccinate in sufficient numbers if they are allowed to but forcing them to do so is the wrong approach. We’d get more compliance with vaxxing if we forbade them from getting the jag.
