Football’s hard, Armstrong, McNeill v Greig

661

Last week I suggested we were better with yesterday’s game over and done with, but I have to admit to thoroughly enjoying the occasion.  It may not have been the derby of Old, but it had traces of familiarity from my youth, when managers Billy McNeill and John Greig faced each other.

I watched the game back on television last night.  What an absolute pair of trumpets Warburton and Weir are!  Weir was sent to the stand for demanding Mikael Lustig receive a second yellow card, despite not receiving his first.  Warburton then explained this to the media, indignant that Lustig wasn’t dismissed for two yellows, still totally oblivious to the fact he hadn’t been booked.

Football’s hard.  Referees make mistakes.  But keeping track of who has been booked is remarkably simple.  It was Nir Bitton, not Mikael, who was booked early in the game.  Nir and Mikael have a similar, slight, build, but there’s 7cm between them, with different skin and hair pantones.

What does this tell us?  That the Newco management didn’t know their opponents well enough to tell them apart, never mind how they would play.  Remarkable, considering how often we’ve been on television this season.

Two weeks ago a Dundee United fan asked me what we’d done to Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.  Armstrong, he explained, was never going to make it as a wide player, he was effective for United through the middle.

I think we suffered for the loss of Tom Rogic, as Stuart edged himself into the occasion, but it may be Ronny Deila deployed him incorrectly.

Moments to cherish from the game: Moussa Dembele’s first touch to control Lustig’s cross at the fourth, and his reverse pass for Scott Sinclair at the third.  You’ve not seen control and awareness like that from a Celtic striker in over a decade.

We’ll touch on the longer-term issues of yesterday at a later date, after we’ve got Barcelona out of our system.

The one thing we all wanted from yesterday was to come through the game without further injuries.  Both Scott Brown and Tom Rogic, two of our central midfield three, retired early.  I’m not going to tell you we’ll take anything from Barcelona on Tuesday, but having Brown, Rogic and Bitton in the team will allow us to at least face the game in decent condition.

Tell me about it, have Celtic and Juve to win titles and Newcastle to get promoted, at about 3/1 … sooner the better! Could have added Man City and Hibs to win titles to bring it to 19/1… ah well!

Have the people behind the two dummies stunt been identified?

Have they provided an explanation on what the stunt meant and what they were trying to say?

For the record I found the whole episode disgusting. It reminded me of the stunts the Police Federation mentalists pulled off when somebody came to their conference and had something critical to say. Whoever did that should be ashamed of themselves — I just hope they do not have short hair, own a van and write up the minutes for their local supporters club.

GB — I think that mob are in the Running for Small Business of the year.

How many trademarks do they need to flog t-shirts? North Curve — get a grip.

Everything they say and do currently just reinforces my view that they are an elitist group of uber fans majoring on look at me self publicity.

The main point is they do not understand progressive politics and the founding ethos of the club — let them eat slogans sounds great in St Al’s 6th year common room but it doesn’t cut it in the real world.

Finally the banner and the t shirts was crap — Neo militaristic tripe — all that was missing was the balaclavas and the goose stepping march into the ground.

Yet the wallopers that organised want the kudos of being first in the UK for dressing up in bin bags — they should ask their parents about “Punk Rock @ 1976” for a bit of history.

“As someone is wont to repeat on here you are doing Level 5 ‘s work for them.”

    I disagree vehemently.

Ignoring when we let our standards down is doing Level 5s work for them. I have a sense of perspective about the hanging effigies, I hope, but choosing to express my distaste and disassociating myself from the action- not in my name- is very much the opposite of aligning with Level 5.

They want us to defend, deflect and deny our wrongdoings so they can paint us in the same way as the other side. Their club died because too many of them believed that line about any criticism of the club is just damaging and only helpful to its enemies. That is a blinkered outlook.

Just as our Board, manager and team can, on occasions, get it wrong, so can elements of our support.

I am still delighted about the 3 points and I can separate out those feelings.

Morning Bhoys from a dry Central Scotland well the real big game is nearly upon us this is what all the grafting and the nerves were about during the qualifying matches. The Bhoys have earned the right to be on the same field as Barcelona and although it will be very difficult they should enjoy the occassion. I have no idea how Brendan will set the team up but we will need to be a bit more solid at the back if we are to have any chance of coming away with anything. H.H.

Have you taken your happy pill this morning?

The Green Brigade are one of the best things to have happened to Celtic. They occasionally get it wrong but do a lot more to entertain and liven up the Celtic Park match day experience and our Board know it or else the GB would have been closed down ages ago. The only thing I found a bit wrong about their banner on Saturday was the words “Hun scum” If they had replaced it with “Know your place Sevco”, I think it would have been better.

Nothing wrong with any of their other banners as far as I’m concerned. We’ve had to listen to McCoist and a whole lot of others from their side issuing veiled threats and mumbling about “we have long memories” and “we have suffered enough”, “we were put into the third division”. Well now their supporters are back and every team in Scotland’s supporters are waiting on them to let them know that their team aren’t finished with the suffering and we have even longer memories (and evidently better memories than they have) about the exact nature of what transpired in 2012 and since. Not to forget their EBT inspired title winning either.

  10. Celtic 5 – Sevco 1…’mon we’ll slag the Green Brigade and advise them on how they should behave because being the erudite and morally upstanding genius Celtic fans we know best and are better than them and their idiotic faux rebel uneducated yoofs that they are and never mind the football because it’s that GB who are all wee daft fannies and they know nothing and they embarrass us and all real experienced expert Celtic fans who know so much we spend most of our time having a go at them rather than spending our energy on real issues like putting the world to rights and letting everybody know all Celtic fans should be like us and not like the Green Brigade who only add colour and noise and actually attend games and have their own opinions and faults unlike us who have lived a bit longer and know all the answers and are better than them blah blah blah blah blah…

There’s fans of other clubs who actually despise us out there, why not spend energy on decrying them rather than carrying out your roles as the Celtic morality police.

    Loving the football from Saturday.

It was an 80 – 20 game with the good guys getting what they deserved.

They had a few moments where they played well but we really bossed the game.

At one point I thought it was pretty even in the first half but then realised game was getting played on their 18 yard line so even when they played well they had to.

Loved the contrast regarding beating your man / making something happen.

JF — was working 2 yards away from his opponent.

PR — was working 1 yard away.

TR — was working 1 foot away and the only way they could stop him was by fouling him.

  15. While I’m looking forward to the Barca game tomorrow night, I’m still not ready yet to file Saturday’s victory away in the back of my mind. I’m still enjoying the jokes and barbs aimed at Warbiola, his team and Joseph Anthony and I’m definitely going to watch the game again tonight!

    However, with regard to Barca.

I don’t think we are capable of parking the bus. We are set up to attack.

One part of me fears a humping and I can see myself hiding behind a cushion.

Another part of me thinks if we can get service to Sinclair, he and Moussa could cause them some problems.

I think the outcome will depend on Senors Messi, Suarez, Iniesta and that Wee rascal Neymar and how they play. Let’s hope they have an off night.

At any rate, we are in the Champions League. Mission accomplished.

The GB go against the roots of the club.

They are elitist uber fans who are now selling themselves as a club within a club.

They do not make the atmosphere in CP — they hi-jack it.

What makes CP special is that everyone can and will join in if the situation demands it.

I would never support appointing someone only on the basis of their nationality but BR, like MO’N and NL, in my opinion, has advantages that men such as Ronny didn’t have. BR’s connections with Celtic ensure that he is aware of the size and pressure of Celtic.

    I’m with you 100% Bobby.

I personally don’t like the use of the word ‘scum’ to describe human beings (I know, I know).

From what I can gather, you’ve been living down south for a few decades. I don’t know if you were in Scotland or visited much in the 80’s, 90,s but there was a group up here at the time – the Scottish Loyalists – I think they were called. They referred to us, Catholics of Irish descent, Celtic supporters as ‘scum’. They were given a lot of publicity at the time in the media. I remember watching a BBC documentary on them. It showed them going into a meeting in John Street School. Their main speaker ( who looked an ordinary, respectable guy of a mature age) lamented that they (Scottish Protestants) had become a sick people and relied on the scum to run their lives for them. He cited people like Michael Kelly as Lord Provost and Paddy (his word) Hamill, Chief Superintendant of Police. They continually referred to us as scum. I hated it and would never now use the word to describe anyone no matter how much I might despise them.
