Forster candle extinguished but there is consolation

185

I was holding a candle for Fraser Forster until the start of this week.  Goalkeeper is arguably the most important position on the field and Fraser had a huge impact on Celtic last season.  More than anyone, he was responsible for the League Cup Final win in December and his performances home and away against Lazio was the difference between the teams.  If only he was in place for last season’s Champions League qualifiers.

At 32-years-old he could easily have five years left at the top, we know he can do the job, so his signing was top priority.  That £90k per week contract at Southampton always had the possibility to cause problems and so it did.  Fraser’s star rose at Celtic and even if Southampton want to move him on, there is a better chance he will be able to go elsewhere in England and maintain, or improve on, his current salary.

Instead, we will hopefully console ourselves with a 26-year-old who, on paper, fits the Celtic model better.  At the money quoted, he is not cheap, but he has been tested in Europe, internationally and in a competitive league.  There is value to be had as clubs across Europe form recovery plans.  Those who trade well in this period will be big winners.

Could someone explain to me where the ‘new’ aura of confidence and belief is coming from for the new season ahead

I’m guessing League Cup Final where they ‘played us off the park’ (think Ryan Christie actually said that to a journalist) and proved once and for all that “there is no gap’ (think Alex Rae has said that many times)

Fraser Forster done an Andy Goram on them when we won that final but from memory we were carrying many injuries and started with Lewis Morgan up front as our only striker. Mikey Johnston should have made it 2 which would have shut them up but he blew it and we now have to listed to how lucky we were :-)

  3. He will probably have a loyalty bonus as well.

Let’s be honest, coming to Celtic was going to cost him millions. The only hope was that Southampton would use the transfer fee to give Fraser a multi-million payoff and cut their losses.

Sorry about that messy first post – got so excited when I seen the zero posts :-)

Big Fraser – he was so happy when we won the LCF that like many I thought it would be a shoe in to get him back, at least on loan for the 10, had he done that and we won the 10 he would have been Immortal, a Celtic Hero forever , now to me I’m afraid he is just a money grabbing Big Tumshie.

Celtic pay £5.5M for goalkeeper who’d have thunk it, another first NFL.

Forster’s EPL wage was the reason he left Celtic in the first instance, and Barkas is a better dressing

room fit, coming from the less cash lucrative Greek league, he has permanency and age, on his side.

Tbh the article is hardly glowing for Barkas, at least he wanted to come to us, and your only as good as your last game is what I was always taught to believe

  11. We must accept reality. Fraser could have come but obviously maximising his income was his first priority, He is totally within his rights to take that approach. So like Rodgers it’s a case of Thanks for what you did for us when you were here and best of luck for the future.

Fraser was a massive Keeper for us but he is gone now and my sole focus will be on the Bhoy’s in this year’s squad,

  13. Disappointed with Big Fraz – a known talent between the sticks.

He’d also put The Fear up the huns……….especially in their support and the meeja.

I hope the new Bhoy steps in and steps up pronto. Any slip ups and he’ll be thrown to the lions.

The support would welcome a morale-boosting lift, and there’s no harm in a bit of grandstanding – especially when it’s done from a position of credible strength.

Did the Huns ever pass the famed 40,000 season tickets?

You can still go online even though it says this:

The deadline date for season ticket renewals has now passed and we will communicate further information in due course.

Ivan Toney – Peterborough Chairman comments

“I would ask that no-one tries to take the mickey out of us. You have to know who you are dealing with. This is not my first rodeo. I know how to operate.

“I am transparent in my negotiations. We have a fee in mind for Ivan and when a club reaches that number they can talk to him.

“Good strikers are like dinosaurs. They are an endangered species.”

Whether we go in for this guy or not – dealing with this kind of guy is when big Peter will earns his salary.

  16. P67 ,

I think thats very unfair on Scott Bain (your comments on Fraser and the UCL qualifiers).

We lost to Cluj due to a poor decision on team sheet by Neil and by a lack of leadership/game management by Scott Brown – plus an exceptionally bad personal performance by Scott Brown, plus a Roganesque handball by Scott Brown.

Scott Bain palmed one , for sure, but all the aforementioned problems caused the shot

Welcome Vasilis, hope you get off to a flyer .

I know Fraser was on 90k a week but what’s a Greek urn?

  17. If that’s the guff that’s coming from the POSH heid-bummer then we should replace the receiver quietly and let the rocket ramble on to himself, Daphne ( his PA) and Geoff from the Peterborough Comet and Argus

  18. Fraser Forster exercised his right to maintain his exhoribant wages. It is the nature of the beast in this level of football.

Is there a bigger example of the excesses of Capitalism?

Some were touting a 33 year old whose biggest claim to fame was posing beside a £260,000 car. ( Was it on a heated driveway ?)

And all players will voluntarily ( not coerced seemingly) make a show of supporting a political movement who wants to abolish the very system that gives them their lavish lifestyles.

A righteous and just cause has been highjacked by politics.

Show racism the red card is to be applauded.

BLM politics of Marxism, pro abortion ( note : not a woman’s right to choose, but pro in any circumstances ), defunding the police and castigation of the surffregates does not equate with equality. In my opinion of course.

Black lives matter, of course they do and this remains paramount, many anti racists realise this but cannot condone the politics of BLM.

I totally understand that players believe in equality and removing the evil of racism from our game, and indeed society; but I think they are being used in this instance.

A sensible grown up conversation is required, but never again do i want to hear ” keep politics outside football ” . I would also be consulting our lawyers about political fines over the years.

    HH.to all.

Fraser is on £72k pw….when injuries to Arsenal and Chelsea goalies occurred his agent was speaking to both and £92k pw was quoted. He was looking for a pay off before coming to us and was trying to maximise his money. However he agreed verbally to come back and a deal was done between us and Southampton but he spoke to his agent and decided against it.

Great last season but we move on. Great shot stopper poor at coming for crosses and not great with his feet. However he had a great season with us but let Lenny n PL down after we had let Craig Gordon go.

    On to the ten 🍀

  20. MacAnthony, the Posh chairman is a Dublin ‘Tiger Cub’ who made his money selling overseas property to mostly Irish people during the Celtic Tiger. A mental time when everyone HAD to have a Spanish/Portugese holiday home or an ‘investment’ in Bulgaria

A lot of punters got burned and so did a lot of the people running these businesses after the crash.

As he is not bankrupt and not in court, i assume he was good (and honest) at it to still have loads of money.

Not your ordinary chairman to negotiate with

PS RTE did a good documentary recently called ‘Burnt by the sun’ covering the above. If you can access online etc i would recommend it. Not all sob stories or bad endings so quite balanced.

  21. The hand of God on

Apparently our new keeper (assuming he signs) is very good with his feet which although he is a great keeper big Fraser isnt. Will be interesting to see if we play out from the back even more than we have been.

It is indeed a pity FF has chosen not to return,as I will be forever grateful for the Cup Final display and a series of excellent saves ,Lazio springs to mind.

He obviously felt Southampton was entitled to fulfill their contract, and they did not appear to be very flexible in that respect,we will never know, but having dragged himself back to prominence from obscurity, clearly his financial requirements exceeded his need for spotlight and fame.

I feel he may regret it in the future.

Regarding BLM I think the slogan has been adopted rather than the political ideals of the founders.Im happy for our players to show their support.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we haven’t bid. Just reading those comments suggests the guy is trying to big this guy up with the hope of generating interest elsewhere. Proper dodgy dealings.

Let’s not forget they did this to Celtic before and suggested we were trying to sign Lee Tomlin.

The point is, Celtic spent the weekend negotiating with West Ham about their striker. I doubt we were firing a 6 and a half million bid for Toney at the same time.

As for the Ajeti having second thoughts story. The proof will be in the pudding. Bear in mind that the source of this story is an online twitter user who claims to be an ex-West Ham story.

None of the trusted journalists up here have been able to confirm it (McGowan at the Mail and Devlin at the Athletic)

Doesn’t mean it’s a lie, but how many stories have been complete cobblers already this summer?
