Free money

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

Thanks for posting JJ’s piece. Might be Daily Record type journalism at its worst but worthy of reflection even if central thesis is rejected. And keeps the issue alive. Just wish our Board could give us a steer – not bull. HH

I’m in-between contracts at the moment, so reading the JJ blog, and also the comments, passes an hour or two each day.

Very much hoping that our PLC board realises soon that it will have to make a stand to keep the fans on-side, and begin to address the governance issues in the Scottish “game”.

I texted a young Leicester daft pal to ask how the celebrations were going. Poor guy’s stuck up the rigs for two weeks. He’s a school mate of Mark Selby too. The city will be drunk dry by the time he gets off.

Totally agree. What annoys me most is the thought that the Board may have been stringing the Res12 Four along. If for reasons which seemed good to the Board – and hopefully there will be no effort to stifle debate at this year’s AGM by Standard Orders machinations – as to why it could not proceed then be honest at least with the Res12 bhoys. The Res12 bhoys could be given info on a confidential, non-disclosure basis until the AGM.

Hope all is going well with you as the worldwide Celtic family is just that, a family. Hail, hail to you and yours.

I’m fully behind the Res 12 Four, and I have nothing but admiration for their efforts.

I’d be gutted if it were to come out that the Board had been stringing them along, for whatever reason.

It seems to me the next few weeks are crucial for the future health of the Celtic Family (Supporters, Team, Staff, Boar, and all).

Thanks for your good wishes, and keep shining that light into the darkness.

I thought that deadline for any submission of Res12 was soon and a long time prior to AGM.

Hence the need for any CQNer with influence at CP to alert the “suits” that the natives are restless and even a string of good results (PG) between now and November ain’t going to make the anger and disappointment dissipate.

My wee faither was one of those typical Glasgow guys who’d split his wage in half. Unfortunately, every other Thursday after getting his pay packet, he would head straight to Shawfield dugs and after losing his half, it would be a toss up to decide wether my mother and us we’re going to get our half. Mostly I would find my mother go through the indignity of having to call into his work on the Friday for a sub to keep us going till the next Thursday. Drink and gambling remains a terrible reminder to me and my sister. Unfortunately not everyone can just have a Wee bet or just have the one wee haulf.

I suppose this is the way the modern world of sponsorship works these days but for me, this Celtic board would sell their souls to the devil to make a quick buck for themselves. Easy money?? No for me Paul 67. You’ve let yourself down with this blog bud. Sorry to say

  29. The Battered Bunnet on 3rd May 2016 2:40 pm

Provided replica shirts in kids’ sizes remain without the sponsors’ logos, I can’t get terribly vexed over the issue.

The shirt represents an advertising medium, and used well delivers useful revenue. I hear the value of the new deal(s) is very useful indeed, sufficient to pay David Moyes an EPL salary and still be quids in.

Booze-wise, we’ve had Carling, Tennent’s and Magners on the shirt over the past decade or so, and we are sponsored by Scottish Leader whisky and (the marvellous) Eden Mill range of beers, gins and whiskies.

I’d rather we carried the logo of a more worthy brand on the shirt, Budwar for example, but being an appreciative user of assorted brewery products, try as I might I can’t get worked up into some morally-contrived outrage.

Best I can recommend for those exercised by the matter, is to crack open an ice cold St Andrews Blonde, put your feet up and relax. Failing which, a nice cup of tea.

Betting companies get a rum deal in my view, presented as some sort of latter-day highwaymen, taking the hard-earned money from the honest man, and depriving families of livelihood. Yet there is no conceptual difference between placing a bet on a sporting event and investing in the financial markets. Heck, outside of Scotland, the sporting event may be less rigged than the market, and the bookie doesn’t charge you a handling fee on your money when you place your bet.

I just don’t buy into the perception that gambling is bad but investing is respectable. It’s the same thing.

I’ve seen comments harking back to the days when we had a Car Manufacturer on the shirt, but no one has objected to the number of people killed each year by cars, or indeed, to the life-limiting pollution they cause. We might choose to drink a beer or place a bet, we might even choose to do both, and irresponsibly at that, but we cannot choose what our kids breath in as they walk to school.

Perhaps we should only carry the logos of wholesome brands, a Dairy company for example. What could be more wholesome than milk?

But then, we’d have to recognise the extraordinary impact on climate change caused by: a) Deforestation to create pasture; b) Methane and NOx gas emissions; and c) Slurry run-off polluting our water and coasts. [List of dairy enviro impacts is non-exhaustive].

OK, it’s all a little facetious, but that’s the point. If we accept the validity of commerce, it’s prerogative to make money, and partipate in it of our own volition – as consumers, employees and investors – all else being equal and within the Law, we don’t really have any authority to criticise one product or service from another.

    ======================

A view which resonates with mine.

Nothing has any meaning but the one we each individually choose to give it.

Mine on this issue is So What? We have free will for a reason, to chose what meaning we give life then see if experience tells us if its the real McCoy.

” So what” is a lot easier than battling cognitive dissonance (which happens if THEY get similar sponsors) or admitting my hypocrisy, where even there I take comfort in knowing I am anything but alone.
