Free money

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

  1. Big wavy,

I now what you mean, and it doesn’t sit well with me. And I suppose if we want the plc to maximise revenue to shareholders, anong other targets, and to be proactive in ensuring that nothing affects that i.e. to act wholeheartedly on Res 12, then I suppose this sponsorship from a gambling company will be shown as just another means of maximising Celtic’s income.

However, I hear about the apparent downturn in Season Book sales due to the effect of the plc’s perceived pursuit of pounds over sporting integrity i.e. their perceived lack of enthusiasm in pursuing Res 12. If true, then there must be differing direct benefits and liabilties for Celtic in pursuing each of these and that must be determining how Celtic act.

Leicester and Ranieri did a amazing job ..Nigel Pearson and his backroom staff, who are still there, are also due huge credit as he and they brought a lot of that team to Leicester .. they went on a fabulous run the last months of last season to stay up. Some might say the clouds parted for them with the upheavals at every top club this season though .. Van Gaal at Man U.. The Special one at Chelsea.. Man City knowing the manager was soon to be out.. Arsenal being Arsenal with The Professor etc

  3. Took some satisfaction from Leicesters winning title last night.

Ranieri seems like a good guy.

But they have also reaffirmed my view that most modern coaches obsession with possession stats is to limited.

I saw that Leicester won the title with just over 40% possession.

Ranieri proved its not the amount you have but the zones its in that count.

Until coaches learn the difference between positive and negative possession they should simplify there game.

Ronnie i think fell into the possession trap.

Completely off the current topic i know, but, i have just been reading the excellent and informative article on one of the CQN Magazine links regarding Michael Davitt’s placing of the shamrocked sod at the centre spot of then new Celtic Park back in the late 1800’s.

It reminded me again of a rare original thought i once had to see that huge access gate just to the right of the main entrance at Celtic Park transformed into a beautiful wrought iron work of art, fit to bare comparison to the equally heart-soaring and inspirational one at Liverpool’s Anfield.

    Wouldn’t it make the hairs on our necks stand on end to see a beautiful wrought-iron gate with shamrock and thistle intertwined and framing the following stirring prose;

“On alien soil like yourself I am here,

    I’ll take root and flourish, of that never fear;

And though I’ll be crossed sore and oft by the foes,

You’ll find me as hardy as Thistle or Rose.”

I for one feel it would complete the Celtic Way and would be a fitting way of saying thanks to the generation that all those years ago had the vision to deliver what remains, (to my romantic mind at least) a great community club welcoming of the common people of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Perhaps it is an idea that could maybe be picked up by CQN or the Celtic Trust to give the idea wings. I’d certainly be willing to start the ball rolling with a couple of hundred quid donation to any crowd-funded project should Celtic PLC be happy to sacrifice the gate on the alter of art and heritage and allow the project to go ahead (again, as a hopeless romantic I’d much prefer it funded by the fans).

    Thoughts and opinions welcome.

    Hail Hail.

Even though I haven’t seen it yet I hate the new Celtic strip.

Anyone who believes there’s such a thing as ‘free money’ also believes there’s such a thing as a ‘free lunch’.

As news of Leicester’s league title win spread across the world, Premier League officials handed out a stark warning about the implications of the win.

Chief executive Richard Scudamore said “This is really bad news. We shouldn’t be letting crappy little clubs like Leicester win things. The sooner we have a strong Man Utd and Liverpool back the better. Otherwise there could be a slow lingering death for the game here.”

FA chairman Greg Dyke backed him up saying “There will be Armageddon for the game here. This sort of thing could lead to social unrest.”

It is believed that talks of league reconstruction have already started, with a top league of two teams the most likely outcome.

Scudamore said, “I have already contacted our PR guy. He will be briefing all the papers on this very soon. He is just a bit busy at the moment, trying to get Arsene Wenger and Roy Hodgson sacked.”

(None of the above really happened. And nothing like that could or would ever happen……)

I remember a right few seasons back when Raniere, still at Chelsea I believe, took a seat in the north stand amongst the Celtic support section 203 or 204 when no doubt he could have had a seat in the directors box. Had a lot of time for il poco Italiano after that and delighted for him.

  11. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Fan-a-tic- there’s no point in lovin’ wee Kieran because he’s next out the door if the price is right.

Save yourself a lot of time and heartache, dump him now, preferably by fax.

  12. No price? You have got to be joking.

we prostitute our shirts to betting and booze companies whilst maintaining to be more than a club.

In one of the most deprived areas/cities of Europe with booze and betting problems a plenty.

    It stinks.

what is the point in ruining the hoops so we can throw more money away on another pukki or kazoo or cole?

Keep the hoops clean and stop signing players we don’t need.

The club real issues. I for one am sick of it.

We don’t need more money to waste on players we need serious change in the board room.

I would have no problem downsizing our budget to errr malmo or molde levels – Maybe then we might beat them.

  24. I remember the letters in the Celtic View from Celtic fans complaining to Terry Cassidy ( mind him? )

about why he had failed to attract a shirt sponsor for the Hoops and our internationally famous club.

He played the ‘aestheticly pleasing card’ but didn’t get away with it as he was soon replaced.

We eventually struck up with ‘Peoples’ – how times change. The SMSM were raging when Celtic set off with Magners and on the day even tried to bring in The IRA?

They’ll do the same now that we have two multi companies on the Hoops, – it’s called jealousy.

A couple of months ago, I commented that I didnt agree with the ads for gambling companies here on CQN. I don’t remember anyone disagreeing outright with me, however I do recall lots of posters have a wee add-ons to their comments about going “just off to place a bet” etc. so I know what the likely majority CQN opinion on this deal will be.

I drink; I just don’t see any natural tie-in for a sports team to advertise alcohol on their strips.

I’d prefer the tops to be virgin and untouched except for players number.

But most certainly I’d prefer other more moral sponsors who are in fact in touch with our social history rather than social mission.

If one life is lost to alcoholism or a gambling addiction through a young kid growing up normalised by this in football then the cost is 1 life too much IMO.
