“Giant punishments” on Rangers were illusory, you were punished instead

1014

Malcolm Murray, the newly appointed chairman of the Newco club Charles Green hopes to establish, yesterday entertained us with his comments on punishments served on a football team suspected of cheating you for over a decade.  He said:

“We’ve had giant punishments already – a European ban, a 10-point deduction, the emotional trauma everyone has suffered. I think, for the good of Scottish football, it’s much better Rangers in the SPL.”

There has been no European ban.  Newco will not be eligible for European competition because it is a Newco and Uefa requires three years accounts from participating clubs.  They are simply not eligible, they have not and will not achieve the qualification criteria for European football for three years.

The 10-point penalty imposed on Rangers last season for seeking protection from creditors by going into administration is hardly a “giant” punishment.  It changed nothing.  Rangers were second in the league when it was imposed and remained so.  They released no players and went on to defeat Motherwell twice, ensuring they finished the league in second place, earning £900k in additional prize money.

As a punishment, it is the equivalent of banning Ally McCoist from this year’s 100m Olympic competition.  Pointless.

Which leaves us with “the emotional trauma everyone has suffered”.  Compared to the emotional trauma suffered by Dundee, Motherwell, Gretna, Third Lanark fans, recent events have been nothing more than a focus for some robust rallying calls.

Don’t even start me on the emotional cost of losing the league in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, all to a team of cheats.  How do you measure that?  Think back to each day we lost those titles and tell me how you felt about them then and how you feel now, knowing you were cheated.

    SPL/SFL merger.

That means SPL is no longer an exclusive club right? So would it still be only 12 (or 11) chairmen getting a vote on transfer? Or all of them? Or will they delay the merger until after the vote?

As my Nanny (maternal grandmother not the hired, preferably Nordic type) used to say,”cheaters never win, even when they think they have.”

The fact of the matter is they have been rumbled and only the most myopically deluded (almost all then) of them won’t admit it.Their pain is soothing. But it still doesn’t make up for the gut-wrenching dismay i,and i’m sure we all, felt after the league losses Paul mentions.

As for Sir Walter Late Rally and his wealthy blue consortihun, good to see they were prepared to let their “beloved” club bite the dust before showing their (red) hand.Dignity indeed?

It’s extremely satisfying having been, being and to be us.They wurny eh peepil!

I have long had my doubts as to whether any compensation was in fact paid by Rangers 1873 -2012 in January 2007 Smith walked away from the manager’s position with Scotland.

It was reported that after the threat of legal action by the SFA a figure of £400000 had been agreed.

Last month I arranged for a tweet to be sent to Stewart Regan asking him to confirm what compensation figure was actually paid by Rangers 1873 -2012.

After several reminders he responded as follows ………

“Nothing to do with me…before my time”

The search for the truth goes on!

  4. Aw_Naw…

I just had this thought, not sure if it is a goer

Could the SFA have been paying the myth’s salary as scotland manager in two parts? one contract taxable and one tax free through the dead one’s EBT vehicle

Yes I read that and meant to add that apart frpm agreeing with your interpretation for Newco from the logical argument, Oldco (or Dodo FC as I now prefer) are still subject to sanctions like having titles removed.

But on your key point about it being an allocation rather than a transfer I think it has legs. One of the reasons is that Doncaster has not articulated or attempted to apply SPL rules sensibly and in the spirit they are meant but to serve his own purpose. An example is him telling Keevins the six man SPL Board would vote on a Newco application. Even if that interpretation were valid at the time (and it was challengeable) common sense dictated that no SPL club would not want to have a say on this issue and I think they made that clear to Doncaster.

So in my book the guy has previous and no credibility, so even if I thought the allocation rather than transfer argument was weak (and I do not) I would question anything Donacaster utters anyway.

The SPL are no longer voting ” Rangers” into the SPL, they are being asked to vote in a new entity that cannot provide any evidence of compliance with the very criteria, stiffened considerably last year by adopting the UEFA club license template, and well done on the SFA for that change. However to recognise that club licensing plays a key role in protecting all clubs and then ignore the very safeguards it is intended to provide is business lunacy. The SFA really must state their misgivings having been pinned down by the CST on the application of club licensing

“The Rangers” cannot meet the financial criteria of 3 years accounts that are intended to provide confidence they are well managed financially, they can provide no evidence whatsoever that the mindest that drove them to extinction has changed andthe possibility of having Walter Smith at the helm should send out big danger signals to Celtic and the other clubs and whilst I have not looked at the other non finacial criteria in detail, I do not see how they can evidence compliance.

Club licensing is there for a reason, UEFA under pressure from the EU Govts acted on a report to bring sanity to football in Europe, to prevent what happened to Rangers happening again. To ignore those rules and the underlying principles would be verging on criminal by the SPL if the SFA said no license can be granted but the SPL ignored the SFA (and there is a question about the SPL being bound by the SFA decisions) or if the SFA were to grant a license, although in view of Regan’s reply to the CST I think that unlikely.

The SFA not the SPL hold the key here and it is time they locked the door on The Rangers joining the SPL, they can do it by suspension under the disciplinary avenue when the Appeals Committe reconvene or under club licensing. Failure to do so under either means the end of Scottish football because it means the rules have been bent to breaking point to suit one club.

Nothing wrong with restructuring the leagues, its the motive thats in question and the fact they seem to be able to push it through in a matter of weeks whereas any time the issue has been raised before we’ve always been told it’d be ‘the season after next’ before it could be implemented.

I need to admit a cardinal sin today – I was away with work most of the week so didn’t hear what the fans of the former football club were making of it all – so I couldn’t resist buying the record today to read the hotline. Best line was someone claiming to back Green over the Myth Mob becasue without Green “we would be dead and buried”!! When is someone going to lay it out in simple terms that they are dead and bried. Gone forever. Many people are needing to read the excellent book called “Good to Great” by Jim Collins which is about turning businesses (companies) from being good to great. There is a chapter about confronting the brutal reality – based on the story of General Stockdale who was imprisoned during the Vietnam war. Basically, you cannot move on until you face up to your situation – no matter how bad it is. We need that in Scottish football just now. Putting off inquiries, appeals, decisions is killing the game. As Ally demanded – we need openness and transparency by all. Get the truth and nothing but the truth out. Until then I will feel cheated and bitter about it. Afterward, I will feel cheated but not bitter. There is a major difference between the 2 states. HH

Not listening to Beeb, but I said on here months ago that the big copout would be league reconstruction.

The other SPL clubs are being forced by their fans to reject the Newco application, but these same clubs wouldn’t want the Newco to take 3 years to gain promotion to the SPL. There’s no way they will be made to start in Div 3.

I thought that SPL 1 and 2 would be proposed, with the Newco starting in SPL 2, in the top league after one year. It wouldn’t be palatable to us, but it was the compromise I was expecting.

What’s being proposed on Beeb Scotland?
