Government allows drinkers into pubs as football fans wait

548

Yesterday we learned that the Scottish Government hoped to authorise socially distanced outdoor events from 23 July.  Reports today suggest the club “plan” to have 30,000 fans at games by August.

Before that happens, the virus must continue on its current trajectory, the social ‘distance’ must reduce from 2m and the Government needs to give the green light.

When we are back at football, it will feel more like an airport experience, with temperature checks, travel flow guidelines, sanitise stations, masks and the kind of distancing rules that will make the prohibition on horizontal movement look like a swearing ban.

I don’t think there is much sympathy from the politicians for football’s position – they have more important things to worry about, but what Celtic and the SRU in particular have assured, is that football can be as safe, if not safer, than most other outdoor activities, and safer than all social indoor ones.  When the Government allows drinkers into pubs and beer gardens, they will find it difficult to revert to their usual antagonistic approach to football fans.

Still nothing from Celtic on any of this, which is right.  Under-promise when you cannot control events.  And no one is campaigning for a return, wait until we are safe and be fair.

Greg Taylor has started approx a dozen games for Celtic, probably hasn’t tasted defeat too many times so far … surely a young international capped player must have something about him to be capped for his country in a position that has two multi million rated players ahead of him and the best team/manager in the country to pay over a million quid for him ? Or maybe your right and he isn’t good enough, too slow and no ability :-)

  2. By the way not sure if was picked up on here but Marc Guidi mentioned on SSB last night that Sky were pushing hard for an August Celtic v Rangers (sic) game … Sky are defo pro-gers in everything they do (along with talksport) but surely you’d think a TV company would want this fixture (their showpiece) as late in the first round of fixtures as possible …. I think fans or no fans we will pump them anyway but surely our board won’t let Sky decide any sort of fixing of matches … although I suppose if no fans at all then even more subscriptions is the way they will justify the “fixing” of any fixture

  3. Think Boli was trying too hard & the crowd were getting on his back a bit.

I still think he could have something to offer, maybe the closed door scenario might suit the likes of Boli, Polish Paddy & Bayo.

As well as the above 3 there are a few players whose contribution was limited or non existent last year

I’m thinking of Elhamed, Mikey J. Soro, Shved, Luca Connell, O’Connor, Afolabi & Karamoko.

If a couple of them step up & the likes of Frimpong kicks on from last year, we don’t really need a lot in.

Key thing is to land Forster & Elyounoussi, a centre half & a left back & the 10 in a row will happen.

  4. I’d be happy enough with an early Glasgow derby. Go out and wallop them early doors and all their good work in the close season cup is null and void.

In the current climate I can’t see Fraz & Elyounoussi both signing, even though I think the Norwegian is a terrific player given the choice our one “big” signing should be Frazer … his long term friendship with Neil could maybe swing things but at this moment I can’t even see us getting one of them … and am usually very optimistic… agree with rest of your post I think a lot of youngsters at every club will get a good go at things in the next 10 months if the season starts in August … probably a good time for young players to grab their chance

I could be wrong here but pre Martin O’Neill era our “derby” was usually end of September start of October … in 2000 we played them (6-2) on the 26th August one of the earliest fixtures against a mob fae Govan that I could remember … to this day I think it was to give Advocat the chance to beat us early in the season … so like you I would play them early, the earlier the better :-)

In the Times today they stated that ‘superson’ Hagi’s first Glasgow Derby would be the first game of the season in August at Paradise (they didn’t use that term!)

Now how does anyone know that two months in advance?

  8. Pre season i posted that the two players way off the level of the others Bolingoli and Lewis Morgan needed replaced as they were bringing down the performance of the team by continually and cheaply giving the ball away.

It took until New Year but one has been moved on and the other is fighting to have a Celtic career, Neil got there in the end, imo.

As for Taylor, this guys attitude i love, here is an example of getting the very best out of your ability. I therefore wouldn’t rule out improvement. The problem i see for Greg is offensively he just doesn’t have the cutting edge a Frimpong on the other side gives you. Given how much we dominate home games and most away games domestically its a position that can be improved upon.

I’d be looking for an upgrade in this position in the transfer market.

I watched some of Spurs v West Ham the other night. They made a point that Spurs RB Aurier is played as a wing back whereas the LB, Ben Davies holds back more. Horses for courses. In a back 4 that would be fine with Taylor and Frimpong. The back 3 causes an issue where both FBs have to bomb on. Taylor isn’t the man for that and we have no LW who can defend (James is OK at it on the right).

3-5-2 it should be Boli for me

  15. looking back on celticwiki, the august & september games versus them, came about with league reconstuction to the premier league.

the other consideration, the league would kick off mid august, and often the first gme versus them was in the 2nd or 3rd fixture.

famous example, when we went to ibrox 1979, they opened the copland stand, the celtic end was demolished, we got 6,000 tickets for a 36,000 capacity, aitken got sent off first half, rangers went 2 up, celtic scored 2 in the last 5 minutes,

    ten men did it again

  16. NORRIEM

Right now we haven’t got a left back that could lace KTs boots.

He left to challenge himself in a better/bigger league. Some folk need to move on.

Paul mcstay had the same opportunity and sh&t it.All in my opinion obviously

  19. another wee consideration for playing thems,

pre prem league, we often had them in the group sections of the league cup. so 2 fixtures in the first few weeks of the new seasons.

anyways, just as aside, fluck them.

and get well everybody thats no well

  20. Connor Francis Wright all the best son ,keep back from your Granda Norrie he’ll teach you bad habits.hh
