Guidetti and Scepovic complete Celtic line-up

999

Things looked touch and go earlier today but Celtic pulled a late double swoop to sign John Guidetti on loan from Manchester City, and Stefan Scepovic on a four year deal from Sporting Gijon.  Guidetti has been a Celtic transfer rumour since his 20 goals in 23 games stint at Feyenoord as a teenager in 2011-12.  Now he’s on board, I’m holding out for news of Georgi Kinkladze.

Stefan Scepovic could have played his hand better over the last 24 hours; footballers are seldom accused of over-intellectualising their plans.  Late interest from La Liga looked to have dealt Celtic a body-blow, but he’s ours now, and I’m pleased we got someone who was wanted by Spanish scouts.

That’s us finished for the summer window.  Welcome to Celtic, John, Stefan.

  1. Re: Ernie’s query regarding the Referendum betting

Only a week ago Paddy Power were 1/8 NO – 5/1 YES

Those odds had changed at the weekend to 1/5 – 10/3 respectively.

They have changed again, once more in favour of a YES vote and are now 1/4 – 11/4. NO remains a heavy favourite with those prices reflecting % livelihoods of 80/26 (the fact this adds up to 106 includes the bookmakers ‘overround’ ie guaranteed profit).

Bookmakers are well versed in risk management/aversion. The inescapable conclusion is that – for whatever reason – money is being bet on YES. It may of course be as simple as astute punters such as KK having backed YES at fancy prices and now laying off giving himself a no-lose position.

Nonetheless the aftermath of the second Darling-Salmond debate, and a poll suggesting that the standings are now 53:47 suggest that the momentum is with YES.

IMO it is difficult to imagine what will happen to the Scottish political landscape in the event afterwards. For what it’s worth I think that a YES vote will see a realignment of the Scottish political landscape along left/right divides.

The SNP will have lost its ‘raison d’etre’. The nationalism which united that party will be obsolete. They will fracture and we could end up with the Nationalist left becoming involved in some sort of progressive coalition of the left. Scottish Labour (who I don’t think can be described as a leftist party any more anyway) will have nothing to do with this given they have detested the Nationalists more than they have the Tories for the past 10-15 years.

The Nationalist right may in time align with their natural allies the Scottish Tories with Scottish politics in time coming to terms with the removal of Nationalism from the equation.

A NO vote may have dire consequences for Scottish Labour. IMO Ed Miliband has as much chance of being elected PM in a UK General Election as I do. The Scottish electorate will have 5 years of Tory/UKIP coalition where they can come to regard Scottish Labour’s role in the events leading to that situation, and conclude they were overly eager bedfellows of the Tories interested only in their own Westminster careers.

Of course if we have a YES vote Messrs Alexander, Murphy and co will find a burning desire within themselves to be the leader of the Scottish Labour Party and go down in history as the leader of the first independent Scottish Government.

Scottish Labour don’t really do irony.

Campbell EBT Ogilvie has been woken from his bed to deal with this personally. As he closed the door on the Celtic representative with a smirk on his ugly hun coupon he was heard to say “I’ll be back up in a minute darling, I’m off to the tool shed to smoke a cigar right now”.

    The Giuidetti deal is off?

How in the blue f**k can we screw up something THIS simple?

The guy was at Parkhead for HOURS … It’s all well blaming the SFA for this, but there’s a certain level of incompetence when you can’t get simple paperwork lodged within a four or five hour window.

No matter what we’re engaged in, we manage to make a complete balls up of it.

On the upside … if that’s true about him negotiating a release … can we offer him a two year deal and make it permanent?

  8. Isn’t PL a big cheese in the SFA now? Can’t he pull a few strings? (Not cheesy strings, that would be just stupid)

  9. The English are still processing transfers outside their window by over 2 hours – Ben Arfa to Hull just going through, Wellbeck to the Arse, and Leicester just signed off on 2.

But up here the bums can’t help the country’s biggest most successful club, who are the only hope of raising the coefficient – the reprobate rat bastards at the SFA can’t staff overtime to get a transfer through barely beyond the deadline.

Once again I wish for Celtic to vacate this backwater and seek riches and glory through another league, or even just balance…

    Night fellow humpties.

  12. See if Celtic have messed this up after all the carry on we have had over the summer it is a disgrace.

If it is the SFA being the SFA then heads must roll there.

If we are hoping Man City will just release the guy because he is in the last year of his contract then this player is very unlikely to be a Celtic player.

And failing.

  14. We may have passed the maximum allowed loan signings.

So if the player can negotiate his release from Man City he can be signed as a free agent.

  16. FFS, I’m so angry I can’t even type properly. That should have read, ‘Now I’m going with the hump.’ Sure you got my drift anyway.

  17. Every time I see Whyte, the footage of him, moustachioed, in an Airdrie dressing room with STV crew back in the 80s/90s waiting like a nervous debutante to shake Legned Watty’s hand and gush his congrats on another cheated title win flashes back and causes me to snarl reflexively.

  18. SSN reporting loan collapsed ‘due to paperwork issues’.

I’d assume that it was a fine mate, especially as they fined an Irish club for the same thing last week. Shocking stuff from them.

    On Gaudeti;

My money would be against us even trying to sign this guy now. There’s no way we’ll pay him the wages he wants on a free, and there’s no point in pretending otherwise.

This one has slipped through the cracks, and I have my own suspicions as to how and why that was allowed to happen. As usual, we’re “settling for.”

Over the next 24 hours a lot of fingers will point at the SFA, and we’ll try to forget that Lawwell is on their board. If he didn’t know the timeframe we had to get the paperwork lodged just what sodding good is he to us? If he did know then this is a joke, and the joke is on us, because we either didn’t push it or couldn’t.

Either way, it’s the supporters – and the manager by the way – who have been taken for absolute mugs again. This is a real, genuine, kick in the stones.

  29. James, there are other potential reasons for this going in late.

What if Man City and Celtic hadn’t finalized the deal until it was too late?

What if Celtic and the player hadn’t finalized that part of the deal until it was too late?

You don’t know. You cannot possibly know at this point in time. You do yourself a disservice by constantly getting ‘angry’ about things where you don’t know the facts.
