Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

  1. Celtic are prepared to listen to offers for Cristian Gamboa.

The Costa Rican joined the hoops for £1m from West Brom in August and started 16 matches as Celtic won the treble.

Brendan Rodgers has no complaints about Gamboa but wants to push Anthony Ralston into the first team squad as back up for Mikael Lustig.

Ralston is currently in France with the Scotland u-20 squad and was praised by Rodgers after starting the end of season match against St Johnstone.

The Irishman is keen to bring through homegrown players and believes that 18-year-old Ralston can quickly make a first team impact.

Gamboa barely got a look in at West Brom under Tony Pulis but has settled quickly in Glasgow where his pace and ability to get up and down the right hand side has made a favourable impression.

With Lustig as first choice right-back Celtic are prepared to let Gamboa leave for the same £1m fee that they paid for him in August.

Rodgers is looking to bring in two or three quality signings during the transfer window with the Irishman confident that there is much more to come from the current squad.

Cheers. Caceres could be a very good signing if we get him and can keep him fit. Uruguay produce great defenders.

I was watching Junior cup final not really bothered about who won it until i heard the Glens fans singing bouncy bouncy ! A real pity Talbot never won it ! Ayrshire’s still Green & White !!!

  5. G67

He cracked a header of the bar, has looked sure footed, doing good, Jonny has been floating about, on the left then the right, has a freeish role, putting in some decent balls and hasn’t given the ball away.

    Gary67,

Any time I’ve seen Gamboa this season…..he’s left us lop-sided….he never took his man on, on the outside….and always went inside to his weaker left…..a decent substitute for Lustig in the SPHell….

So we need a Champions League quality RB….it’s too soon for Ralston ;-))

Park Road, I saw some of the post match stuff from the final today.

There was a boy in the Glens’ support with the new hoops on . The camera moved along from him and showed a guy with a tatoo of the old RFC sypmbol they had on their tops in the seventies.

  19. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Dena , can I ask a bit of advice from you or any other supporter from Ireland who tavels to our games by bus and ferry.

My son is planning on going with a local CSC to our pre season friendly in Dublin next month.

My wife is really worried about him going particularly as he will be going through the North of Ireland during the run up to the reason for their hate fest.

When the buses come off the ferry at either Larne or Belfast , are they directed away from the port as quick as possible?

Are the supporters on the buses discouraged from showing any colours or flags until they get across the border for those travelling there?
