Horrible damage inflicted by requisitioners

641

The actions of the Sevco Requisitioners in undermining Newco Rangers made no sense.   They invoked an almighty schism, one which will forevermore deny the emerging club from a potentially rich seam of support.  An act of such potential vandalism would surely not be undertaken unless they had a plan to deliver the necessary votes?

Turns out they didn’t have a plan after all.  Some Oldco Rangers fans put their money on the table but their face didn’t fit.  As a consequence, another group of Oldco Rangers fans overtly and covertly campaigned against them, but refused to put cash on the table.

Say what you like about the Easdales, they paid their money fair and square (and any debts to society, for those who like to go digging in the past).  The embryonic club will develop in their image, it will stand or fall on their judgement.  After coughing up, they endured incredibly manipulative pressures.  They don’t strike me as natural underdogs but on this occasion they were.  They resisted and I’m pleased for them.  If you want to buy a club, walk in the front door with your cash, don’t try to drive the price down by trashing the club and invoking an insurrection.

Paul Murray deserves a special mention in this whole process.  When Charles Green was pulling a deal together to buy the liquidated assets of Rangers, Murray campaigned against him, and all others who were prepared to put money on the table.  As a consequence, Green was up against it from day one.

Instead of addressing Rangers fans as the man who ensured football would continue at Ibrox, Charlie was painted as a pantomime villain.  Without this act of vandalism, he would have been able to sell 30,000 season tickets at full price.  He could also have chased everyone earning over £50k per annum off the premises, ensuring Newco launched profitably, with a strong fan base.

Today, Newco would have money in the bank and be laying the foundations necessary for top flight football.  No ‘legend’ would have been able to hold them to ransom in return for £800k p.a.  Instead, Green, with £5.5m and untold more from his consortium in the game, was put in a horrible situation.  As a consequence, he overpromised and under-delivered.

Having done all this, Murray turned on the Easdales, still without the money to get the job done.  It is utterly unfathomable.

It would cost upwards of £35M to get Dermot Desmond’s shares if he was prepared to sell at market price. Then we’d also need another special resolution to prevent whoever was buying having to launch a bid for the full club, because buying all DDs shares would take them over the mandatory bid threshold.

Anyway I expect DD would want a premium on his shares to sell the whole lot, so let’s say £50M.

@hen1rik @RetroScot @pmcn888 ASA have been very clever here, in the report they state “there is no legal definition” for what they concluded

@hen1rik @RetroScot @pmcn888 In other words they know they are wrong and by stating that in the report, they hope no-one will take it further

@hen1rik @RetroScot @pmcn888 I reported this to trading standards, who agreed not only that the report was wrong but Rangers are a new club

@hen1rik @RetroScot @pmcn888 However, they did not wish to take the fight on!ASA have suggested a course of action which simply did not apply

“I think the five signatories wanted to have a Rangers of some description, but I would say the main point was to allow Sevco to kick a ball in anger 48 hours after the meeting. Without the agreement, they could not have done that. It was only later that Charles Green began to pretend that Sevco was Rangers.”

Too true, having a Rangers was certainly high on the agenda.

Now I’m not sure if the agreement was ever ratified, i.e. signed off by all parties, there was rumours it wasn’t, that aside it was certainly implemented on the 03-Aug-2012.

Yet Sevco Scotland played Brechin in Ramsdens Cup some three days earlier.

Now the morality of letting Sevco jump over the likes of Spartans to get membership of the League can be discussed – the point is as a new member of the Scottish Football League they get a Registered Membership of the SFA and can play quite legitimately as a Football Club – they had no bars, the five way agreement was unnecessary – Sevco could have changed their name to Govan Rangers or the like and carried on.

I believe the main purpose of the five way agreement was to give the impression Sevco was Rangers – i.e. less Rory Bremner doing Tony Blair more the Dead Ringers doing Ozzy Osborne.

True it was Charles Green who insisted they were the same Club, but it was the SFA’s duplicity that allowed him a hook to hang the lie.

Art 14 in spite of its title in fact sets out the conditions under which a transfer is allowed.

It enables the SFA to do as it pleases.

Like you I thought this is the rule that had been broken but on examination it is in fact the rule that enables the very opposite of the title.

  8. The Battered Bunnet on

I spoke at length to the guys at Spartans in March 2012 with a view to a new application being submitted to the SFL. The conclusion: Irrespective of how well we presented our proposals, there was no chance of Spartans getting the vote ahead of a reconstituted Rangers. Remember, this is the club who were overlooked in preference to assorted semi-pro highland and borders clubs despite their remarkable community story and brand new facilities. One of the SFL committee inspecting them in 2008 suggested that Spartans ought to be playing cricket not football. The lower league clubs saw (and see) Spartans as competition for young players. They don’t want them anywhere near the senior game, which is perhaps why the new pyramid system – Lowland and Highland Leagues competing for one SFL place – is so constrained.

Reason the new Rangers were accepted into the 3rd division, or certainly the biggest part of the decision, was the financial impact on almost all clubs from the bottom up. There was a live proposal for gate sharing at one point – 50% gate shares, imagine! – but which was dropped as it was just too damned brass necked for even the most opportunistic SFL club.

  13. The Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland produced a report on the 13th December 2013. This report offers the following working definition of sectarianism in Scotland:

“Sectarianism in Scotland is a complex of perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, actions and structures, at personal and communal levels, which originate in religious difference and can involve a negative mixing of religion with politics, sporting allegiance and national identifications. It arises from a distorted expression of identity and belonging. It is expressed in destructive patterns of relating which segregate, exclude, discriminate against or are violent towards a specified religious other, with significant personal and social consequences.”

#Celtic are giving Parkhead Community Nursery the money stolen during a break-in & giving the children toys for their Christmas party.

  16. I may need a tin hat here. Where do we see Celtic in, say, 10 years’ time?

If we get a move to a “better” league, will we mount a realistic challenge for top European honours? Will we be able to pay £100+ per week to star players? Do we want this?

I feel a bit uncomfortable at the thought.

Right now, we are angry at being cheated by the SFA blatantly favouring our oldest rivals. That is nothing compared to the favouritism being shown by UEFA towards the giants of European football.

In all honesty, I would rather see Celtic campaign for fair and open competition in Scotland with a more equitable distribution of TV money to all top division clubs, and for that model to be replicated throughout Europe. Clubs would only be allowed to spend an agreed percentage of their turnover on wages. The fairer spread of TV money among the smaller clubs would generate better competition in all domestic leagues and could revitalise the European tournaments which are now becoming a bit predictable. What chance is there now for a club from outwith the top 4 leagues to win the CL?

Financial Fair Play is essential if our beautiful game is not to become a plaything of the uber rich. Bob Kelly warned decades ago about the dangers of TV taking over the game. He is being proved correct in spades.

  23. Auldheid @ 16:52,

I’ve been reading your posts on TSFM so know you are – as usual – on the ball with this one, but bear with me…

“Art 14 in spite of its title in fact sets out the conditions under which a transfer is allowed. It enables the SFA to do as it pleases.

Like you I thought this is the rule that had been broken but on examination it is in fact the rule that enables the very opposite of the title.”

    That is very true…

However it could be argued that the thrust of the article is to prevent arbitrary or illicit transfer of membership.

Now it could be a case that that a Club wants to change it’s membership to another entity quite legitimately – in fact it states that a solvent transfer during during a corporate re-structuring would be given approval.

There could be other reasons for transfer – You can also imagine during a merger i.e. Caledonian Thistle/Inverness the resultant Club wanting to keep membership of the League and the SFA.

So the catch all sentence in article 14.1 that allows the SFA Board discretion is for that purpose and must have implied bounds.

The English rules state that an insolvent Club can’t transfer membership (interestingly missing from the SFA rule – you’d a’thought they saw it coming:-).

Also article 15 (SFA) states that a Club’s Membership can be suspended or terminated for an insolvency event.

My argument would be that by transffering the membership of an insolvent Club, the SFA Board not only went against the spirit of the rules regarding transfers they actually went against the expressed term that it is prohibited.

Now exceptions are fair enough but the criteria for granting an exception to the prohibition of transfer must surely be that the circumstances justify the application to transfer.

The Rangers Football Club must have been made the application to transfer membership when they were insolvent, I believe that although the SFA Board have “complete discretion” a strong argument can be made that they acted against the IMPLIED terms of the article.

    Hail Hail

Too late I think.I’d had foolishly hoped that Celtic would be at the renaissance of Scottish Football but it seems that we as a club are never going to be allowed to bring our skill and passion and business acumen to the closed minded badly run entity that Scottish football has become.

The jealousy and the hatred against us seems insurmountable and I for one had always been against us moving to England and ever since Nimmo I see we may prosper in Scotland but only against all odds and nothing to do with football.

Sad to say I do believe our game is beyond repair not only in Scotland but in Europe to, the CL has been Blätterised and is a real joke now if I am honest!

Our national game has been Ogilvied!! Dumbed down to the extent that even when we are the sole representatives our our country in Europe we are still vilified!

Rotten to the core, apart from Celtic I lost interest in the beautiful game quite some years ago, a World Cup sponsored by Budweiser and McDonalds!! And now with all the skullduggery inout game and the constant fighting on here and in other parts of the Celtic World I am saddened to say it is the least I have been interested in Celtic games for years and years..
