Horrible damage inflicted by requisitioners

641

The actions of the Sevco Requisitioners in undermining Newco Rangers made no sense.   They invoked an almighty schism, one which will forevermore deny the emerging club from a potentially rich seam of support.  An act of such potential vandalism would surely not be undertaken unless they had a plan to deliver the necessary votes?

Turns out they didn’t have a plan after all.  Some Oldco Rangers fans put their money on the table but their face didn’t fit.  As a consequence, another group of Oldco Rangers fans overtly and covertly campaigned against them, but refused to put cash on the table.

Say what you like about the Easdales, they paid their money fair and square (and any debts to society, for those who like to go digging in the past).  The embryonic club will develop in their image, it will stand or fall on their judgement.  After coughing up, they endured incredibly manipulative pressures.  They don’t strike me as natural underdogs but on this occasion they were.  They resisted and I’m pleased for them.  If you want to buy a club, walk in the front door with your cash, don’t try to drive the price down by trashing the club and invoking an insurrection.

Paul Murray deserves a special mention in this whole process.  When Charles Green was pulling a deal together to buy the liquidated assets of Rangers, Murray campaigned against him, and all others who were prepared to put money on the table.  As a consequence, Green was up against it from day one.

Instead of addressing Rangers fans as the man who ensured football would continue at Ibrox, Charlie was painted as a pantomime villain.  Without this act of vandalism, he would have been able to sell 30,000 season tickets at full price.  He could also have chased everyone earning over £50k per annum off the premises, ensuring Newco launched profitably, with a strong fan base.

Today, Newco would have money in the bank and be laying the foundations necessary for top flight football.  No ‘legend’ would have been able to hold them to ransom in return for £800k p.a.  Instead, Green, with £5.5m and untold more from his consortium in the game, was put in a horrible situation.  As a consequence, he overpromised and under-delivered.

Having done all this, Murray turned on the Easdales, still without the money to get the job done.  It is utterly unfathomable.

I had never quite seen Charles Green as ready to be the grim reaper that was necessary, but I suppose had Murray and co been honest (hah) then they would have backed him on cutting the wage bill, but that would have meant the likes of Walter and Ally taking a hit in their pocket. Green did OK in money terms too, so they are all tarred with the same dishonest brush.

However having fired both barrels at Paul Murray and since I mentioned the question of honesty, fancy having another go at Campbell Ogilvie at some point?

We all know what we are up against and regardless of what happens at Ibrox, what happens at Hampden will influence what happens to Celtic unless honesty rules.

I went onto Scotsman.com to view Tom English discussion with fans on Sevco AGM. It was a reasonable discussion. Paul’s point was made a few times by Tom English, “if you want control of the club then but it” but sevco are not listening. I think he was a bit selective in what questions he decided to answer, twice I asked ” Why does every business plan have to evolve around a sugar daddy, why can’t Rangers simply have a budget that allows them to live within their means”, he didn’t answer that one, I wonder why?

Note the criteria is 3 years membership NOT mean having 3 years audited accounts – a common misperception that has taken on the” a cockroach is invulnerable to a nuclear strike” legend that keeps it alive no mater how many times it is nuked by quoting Article 12″

Was this very problem not the main driver for the Sevco Friendly Accomplices’ determination to transfer the dead cheating clubs membership, circumventing this possible hiccup?

    =============================================

I doubt avoiding the impact of failing to meet UEFA rules was a prime driver which was keeping Rangers alive in Scottish football for fear of losing a large section of the paying customers.

Licensing and Membership are terms often used interchangeably as if they are the same thing when they do not and it can cause confusion.

    On Licensing:

UEFA set the standard for national associations and insist that teams in top tiers of leagues meet UEFA FFP standards to be eligible to play in UEFA competitions. The rules and criteria are specifically set out on UEFA FFP 2012 (an update on 2010).

Clubs in lower tiers however have to abide by the standard the national association deems necessary. In Scotland it is called National Club Licensing. Like UEFA licensing it has rules and criteria although a bit less rigorous in degree and scope than UEFA FFP.

Whilst clubs cannot play in a UEFA competition without meeting the licensing standard, there is more discretion under National Club licensing with a number of levels from Gold down to Entry Level. The idea is that standards are set, criteria to verify standards against are set out and if a club fails to meet the Entry standard it is given time to comply, but ultimately, at the discretion of the Licensing Board, a licence could be refused leading to cessation of playing.

However a club would have to behead at least 10 referees and not be contrite to suffer that fate. I exaggerate but in short football, in Scotland anyway, wants to keep football clubs alive, otherwise there is no one to play against.

    On SFA Membership

Now had the normal course of events taken place new “Rangers“who had no SPL place or SPL share , it having gone to Dundee, would have become an Associate Members of the SFL and had 14 days to thereafter to apply for Associate Membership of the SFA (and after 5 years been able to apply for full membership, except reconstruction has changed that.)

What happened is that Article 14 of SFA Articles came into play which, whilst it prohibits a transfer of membership nevertheless allows any other application for transfer of membership to be reviewed by the SFA Board which will have complete discretion to reject or grant such application on such terms and conditions as the Board may think fit.

I reckon that it was this complete power of discretion that gave the SFA the authority not only to enable a transfer by allowing D&P or C Greene to apply for one, but to also set up the 5 way agreement. They could of course have said apply as a new club for Associate SFA Membership after joining the SFL, but the transfer and 5 way agreement discussions probably took place earlier against a background of staying in the SPL. Nevertheless that is what could have happened had SFA not been intent on keeping Rangers alive and I can understand why that would be their priority.

UEFA have no such concerns in terms of UEFA competitions. They say you can be a member of your national association, but if you fail OUR licencing criteria which does not recognise a transfer of membership and is there to protect the integrity of UEFA competitions, you are not allowed to play in a UEFA football competition.

Ironically Both UEFA and SFA have the same aim which is to protect the game they are charged with governing..

The difference is UEFA think this can best be done by removing cheating, the SFA think our game can only be saved by indulging in it.

  9. Sipsini, an excellent point.

Cathedral View, I’m less animated on that point. The Association and League had it within their powers to vote on the matter and did so accordingly. We might not like the rules, but none were broken.

SFTB, preparing for top flight football and challenging Celtic are two vastly different prospects. On your point, mistakes were clearly being made, allowing them to continue (not that we had a choice) was surely correct.

Remember, the fundamentals of newco have not changed, they are hamstrung with investors to satisfy.

“the fundamentals of newco have not changed, they are hamstrung with investors to satisfy.”

That is a level 2 victory, for sure.

What I am questioning is if a level 1 victory was available to us. If we had challenged more vigorously the rules on both membership and license, as Res. 12 is attempting, belatedly, to force us to do, could we not have halted the fiction of Sevco historical continuity at a much earlier stage and saved a lot of angst.

In short, whilst understanding some levels of inactivity were necessary, do you think we were inactive to a point of laziness? complacency?? or resigned defeat and knowing our 2nd class status???

Parkhead, he did say the requisitioners were all talk and no action, didn’t put their money up when they could have. He reckons the end game may be The South African tax dodger buying out Blue Pitch and Margherita. He answered a question agreeing that it would be very powerful if the fans don’t buy season tickets and starve them out. He reckoned White is not involved at all but Chucky may be…….. He disagreed with “Walters” statement around you’ve got to spend money because we are “Ra Rangurs” statement. You probably hear more than I ever do but I cannot see the attraction or motivation for Celtic in the statement in the second half of your sentence.

As ger57 said this morning, why would we want a challenger who could deprive us of the certainty of CL riches?

The only answers I can come up with, and none of them convince me, for the reasons outlined in brackets, are:-

    1) We agreed to keep quiet, let them live and come back in as a reward for being allowed to leave the SPFL set up on our own. (I think the Board, if they had cast iron guarantees on this, would be dropping hints about it to quell the unrest in our support. They are not doing so , therefore I do not believe it.)

    2) We agreed to keep quiet as Sky has promised us a route to an English League but only if we go as a pair of clubs with our background rivalry. (Sky could not swing this last time they tried so why would we bet on this option now?)

    3) We have very pessimistic readings from UEFA about our future status in Euro competition and have bet that, if Euro competition is not going to get us riches , we need to have a competitive Scottish League and believe only a strong Rangers can provide it. (would fan surveys not have suggested this was a bad commercial move?)

    or

    4) We want them back, hamstrung and weak, so we can pile a few more winning titles against them and reduce the gap from the current “official” figures of 44 to 54. (why not 44 to 0?)

Can you think of any other reasons or are you convinced of any of the 4 I have listed?

  24. the long wait is over on

Thems are the perfect example of what happens when fans (individually and collectively) let their egos get in the way of the club they profess to love.

Given that it was clear for several years before Green and Whyte Valentines Day that there was never going to be a sugar daddy weighing in with petrodollars, roubles or jamjars all they needed was someone competent to come in, tell the fans they were in for a few years of pain and cut the costs to £1 less than income.

No-one had the courage or cojones to deliver that message to the hordes with the result that attention has been grabbed by anyone who can claim to be a “Rangers man” and have “the best interest of the club at heart” with no concrete means of either getting into power or , worse, delivering actual fiscal progress when they get there.

When you have the chairman of the club acknowledging that their fans just won’t put up with poorer and therefore cheaper players you know there’s a problem , or at least you should.

Einstein’s definition of insanity -doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – has never been better illustrated.

  25. To those that advocate that we spend 3 to 4 million £’s on Ryan Gauld.

There are several reasons why we shouldn’t.

There are players who will be less of a risk if you are spending that kind of money.

The boy hasn’t done enough to be worth that kind of money.

I believe he is a prospect ,but only at around £500k at present.

The fact D’utd would want more is irrelevant.

Let’s keep an eye on the boy ,he is still too slight to be a top performer for Celtic.

Wait and see where he is next year at this time.
