Important takeaways from Uefa comment on Postecoglou

364

Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence.  There are important takeaways from this.

Ange’s signature must be on this application.  This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.

Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange.  The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop.  Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country.  This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.

Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect.  There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process.  If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night.  Must be horrible for the players.  Hard to believe we are in 2021.

“what do you think the outcome would have been if he / SH was left to his own devises ?”

He was. We left Iraq alone for a long time. He has been executing political rivals and dissidents, not just Kurds for a long time. He was allied to Russia and the fall of the old Politburo had more to do with the West’s desire to topple him than any threat to the Kurds whose plight we ignored for years and continue to do so. Saddam was a useful bulwark against Iran when those 2 countries went to war.

So why was Iraq chosen as the regime to tackle? It was nothing to do with sponsoring terrorism abroad. Gaddafi wasn’t picked and he had been sponsoring perceived terrorists in the iRA. Iran and Saudi weren’t picked but they ad more to do with militant Islam and were involved with more terrorist acts against the West.

Saddam was chosen because he was hte easiest to beat. An unpopular regime with his neighbours, because he wasn’t Islamic enough, but a popular target for the West because he would not get Middle East allies fighting on his behalf, because there was a lot of oil that Halyburton wanted, and because it would cause chaos. We had no plan, apart from creating chaos and a void, for what to do when we won, and just like Afghanistan in the next few years, we are going to see all the locals who tried to help the Western Invaders getting killed in revenge by the Islamic Fundamentalists that we helped created and strengthen.

Saddam was killing Kurds and Iraqis yet more died as a result of our invasion than would have died otherwise. By any count we cost more lives than we saved and we have abandoned the Kurds again for Erdogun to deal with as he pleases.

I am in favour of tyrants being toppled and better regimes replacing them. But if you can’t do that becasue you are not interested in doing that, then you just sow the seeds of the next conflict.

Out for a couple of pints tonight with work colleagues/ pals tonight. One massive Tim from Methil, 3 non-tims (or huns), including an ex-pro who played with Alloa and Thistle (same team as le petit merde) and a guy who genuinely was a captain of industry. Yep – George Square was not the only venue tarnished by grafitti , songs and fireworks that night. I had to put up with it too. But they on a leaguee they were always gonna celebrate.

A couple of venues organised by Sevco themselves with planned visits by the team and management could have kept 10-15k of them in two different Sevco venues, Ibrox and Murray Park. Maybe even add, one more Public Park to the list to reduce the preference for George Square to a level that the police could handle, if they did indeed have the wish to handle it.

It would at least, allow the club to take responsibility for dispersing the gathered crowds with a warning or stronger encouragement to go home. I am sure a hard core would still chance their arm with a Triumphalist City Cemtre presence but many of those who would have gone with young kids may , at least have dropped out of Phase 2 of the evening. It was certainly worth an attempt at planning instead of the abject surrender of our streets that we saw. Aimless government and aimless policing should never be praised.

Thanks for that informative, insightful post.

My mum wondered why everyone seemed to dislike us the Brits, my simplistic view was, wherever we get involved the natives come off worse in many cases.

Your post goes into detail how.

I see Peter Lawwell still influences the leaders on CQN. We have fallen so far in such a short time and most roads lead back to the departure of Brendan and us falling asleep at the wheel, with the subsequent downsizing in the management team. Just remember, our CEO was paid £3.55m in 2019 for his part in Calamity Celtic. Lenny left 101 days ago.

Scorsese’s best fillm is “The Last Waltz”- always found his Godfather and Mafia films kind of myth- making. The Mafia guys were pretty low life and bumped off the guy who delivered Vegas to them as they thought he was wasting their money. Lucky Luciano was no shrewd operator and Pacino as Michael Corleone tries to make him more complex and superior than he was. Leaches on the working class and the Unions all of them

We were not allowed last year and We obeyed by and large, I think constrained by two factors- we were in the early days of lockdown and we had won a curtailed league. We would have been looking to clebrate big time if we had won our 10, make no mistake.

We would have needed the same planning and curtailment because, though we were not at the height of the pandemic, we were not yet out of the woods.

You know I have always said that there was room for small attendances at outdoor events and Celtic could have had some this season if we had still been in the mood to want to attend when the league was lost so early.

We are supposed to be guided by the science but we had a Dons game where 500 successfully attended without any Covid transmission outbreak and 2 instances of 1000 crowds at Rugby matches with the same results. We have seen indoor snooker crowds, amd Disco Raves in Liverpool indoors, plus crowds at matches in England, where Covid is no more nor less scary than here.

In a few days time, as I predicted, these “no gathering” rules will be lifted for the Tartan Army (trusted more as SNP voters than the Celtic supporting group of Yes Voters) and when they travel down to London in droves, wee Sean Clerkin won’t be at the border to stop them nor will we hear the kind of forceful disapproval that we were subject to.

As I said, we behaved ourselves very well a year past February/March but the idea that we would have done the same again if we landed the 10 is lying to ourselves.

Our 10iar would have been a once in a lifetime experience, just as their first ever league was for them.

Now we, 3 year before, had been living over here when Toronto had a huge Italian population which in essence mirrored New York so nothing in the movie surprised us.

Anyway on the way back down the road we got off the train at Dumbarton, went intae Claude Alexander where I bought a navy blue pin stripe suit, walked along to Edwards buying black and purple shirts as well as a white tie.

Scorcese did not direct the Godfather Trilogy, Coppola did. But he did make Mean Streets early doors, possibly capturing better than most the Little Italy part of NYC of the early 1970s. And of course the apparent contradiction of crime and religion, not to mention the problems that longlasting childhood friendships can bring.

I do like that he has a philosophy (which Howe apparently had too) – the problem is that it doesn’t seem to work consistently.
