Important takeaways from Uefa comment on Postecoglou

364

Today’s news cycle is dominated by comments from a Uefa spokesperson who confirmed Celtic have applied for an exemption for Ange Postecoglou from holding a Uefa Pro Licence.  There are important takeaways from this.

Ange’s signature must be on this application.  This could only happen if he had permission from Yokohama, his current employer, and contract terms had been agreed.

Exemption will be granted, this facility is there to provide for candidates like Ange.  The Pro Licence requirement is there to ensure standards in the European game, not to act as a closed shop.  Celtic are pursuing a similar Work Permit application to allow him to take up employment in this country.  This will occupy another day’s news cycle, but Ange will meet this requirement too.

Yes, Ange will not be able to take charge of a Celtic game for weeks, but our June schedule has been kind in this respect.  There is nothing to stop him planning a squad or backroom team for next season, I expect he is at least a week into this process.  If he’s good enough, the hassle getting him here is worth it.

Pretty gutted at the booing when England players took the knee at the Riverside Stadium last night.  Must be horrible for the players.  Hard to believe we are in 2021.

What is more of a mess: hiring someone in the showers or this current debacle?

    Vote now.

  2. I’m going with the current debacle because after The Shower Scene From Hampden they had to get this summer absolutely right. Absolutely right, with no mistakes.

And they’ve kind of … underperformed.

Think the important take away from this is…the board seemed unaware of this requirement. The disaster that they have overseen is quite staggering and they should all be shown the door 🍀

  8. suspend reality and maybe he is the greatest coach in the world…..but he knows NOTHING about Scottish football, European players. Who is he going to sign? No -ONE! someone else is going to have to do that. We have no scouting system/recruitment.. So where do players come from? International players won’t be back till start/middle of july. Oh and half the players are wanting away. That’s problems for any coach… no matter how good they are.

you have just brought back a nightmare of a decision me and my mate made, circa 89/90

we lived in Battlefield at the time and made the decision in town, after student’s union kick out, to delay our takeaway purchase until we got off the late night bus (626?) and go to Persepolis for their pakora.

Got there and it was shut, nothing else open either

trudged back to the flat and realised i only had cornflakes and a big set of nae milk

Simply because it should all have been lined up as a plan B when Howe told the board he wasn’t coming to Glasgow. If it was done we should have had an agreement in place he could already be here getting on with the job in quarantine.

What makes you think the have given their previous history.

  13. Rolling Stone – I agree – I was setting out best case scenario here.

SonsofErin – business visitor entry doesn’t work for those who are awaiting a WP – he’s more likely to get refused at the airport and then his WP will be refused on the basis of previous refusal…

They wouldn’t have been able to start any of this until Howe turned them down, which was last week.

Since last week it appears that they have agreed a contract, compensation to his old club and are now dealing with UEFA and then finally will be work permit time.

No point asking UEFA for a permit if you’ve not even offered the guy a job, same with a work permit.

Their mistake was waiting too long for Howe’s rejection, that shouldn’t been signed or rejected 2 months ago. I can only think they were 100% certain Howe was coming.

Postecoglou’s team lost 2-0 to Kawasaki yesterday. There are now 21 points behind, with 3 games in hand, ( but we count these as 9 points, right? )

  16. quadrophenian on

    BSR – feta accompli – quality ;)

    Ange also ouzos football knowledge.

  17. Inquitousiv – think you’re mixing Yokohama FC with Yokohama Mariners, the former are bottom of the league and did indeed lose to the leaders, Kawasaki. Mariners are 22 points behind the leaders with 5 games in hand. I think the season there is only halfway through.

  18. Supporting Celtic throughout the 90’s and hun 9 in a row wasn’t the greatest period. Tommy Burns’ team played an exciting, free flowing style of football. It was enjoyable watching us play. Even if the trophy cabinet was bare at seasons end.

Watching Celtic this past couple of seasons has been nothing short of a chore. I enjoy us best when we are entertaining first and foremost.

I’m excited to see what Postecoglou does with our team. I can’t wait for next season. I’m 100% on board with him.

Still think the board are a shambles. Hope Mckay has designs on sorting this.

  19. Right, we know the managerial situation has been a farce but this is overshadowing the DoF questions.

Where is he, who is he and did he have a say in the managerial appointment? If not, why not?

    The Huddle

I agree they should have bumped Howe months ago however it would have been prudent to get the ducks in a row for the possibility that he may not come. We didn’t do that and we don’t have a management team as such if all is agreed. So we are stuck with Kennedy Strachan and McManus the nucleus of the coaching team who managed to make last season memorable for the wrong reasons.

It’s been badly handled by the board and why you think they are managing this fiasco prudently is beyond me.

    ———

I’ve never said they’ve handled it well. They’ve balls up the process, mainly by wasting too much time on Howe.

If Howe was first choice and Ange second, then it makes sense that they stick with their second choice even if it means they have to go through the pain of UEFA and Work permits.

I know nothing about Ange but the hope is the board do, and that’s why he is second choice.

Personally I don’t rate Howe so that doesn’t really bode well for Ange, but maybe he’ll surprise me.

You originally implied that the board didn’t know about the permit, I asked how you knew this considering they appear to have moved fairly quick since Howe knocked us back.

  23. A fan of Persepolis too but I have to say the Anarkali on the Vicky Road across from Cafe remains the best for me for pakora.

    Curries are excellent too 😋

From reading this, does anyone think Celtic are following a moneyball strategy?

If only Celtic had a strategy to follow.

This is weak, ineffectual, disorganised management.

We’ve been without a manager for one hundred days but currently have two CEO’s.

I’m hoping Dominic McKay doesn’t learn too much from Peter Lawwell in the handover.
