Improvements clear two weeks on from home Astra game

2373

It’s a bit frustrating being so close to qualification for the knock out stages last night before a momentary lapse cost us late in the game, but there were plenty of positives.  60 minutes into last month’s game at Celtic Park against Astra, taking four points from them looked very ambitious.  We played considerably better last night in the corresponding home game, or in the home game against Dinamo Zagreb.

Celtic are functioning better in midfield, while defensively they’re also looking solid.  We acknowledged some weeks ago that without Guidetti or Commons we would struggle to create and execute chances, and so it proved.

With Anthony Stokes also out the picture, Leigh Griffiths got the nod to replace Stefan Scepovic and instantly brought some drive to the forward line.  He was unfortunate that his ‘goal’ was disallowed for a debatable infringement, but he just brings the kind of purpose inside the box that we didn’t have until his arrival.

We’re now four games unbeaten in this competition, and we’re improving.  The evidence suggests that Salzburg have also improved since we took a point from them on match day one.  Last night’s result in Zagreb was impressive, but Salzburg will face their stiffest test of the group at Celtic Park.

Still fancy our chances of winning the group.

  6. Re my previous post these are notes following a conference in Edinburgh a couple of years ago before the “consultation” took place that did not prevent the Offensive Behaviour Bill and is not an endorsement or support for what eventually emerged. Quite the reverse.

My main point is the role of our smsm in supporting sectarianism for profit but there’s lots of other points on measures much more effective than the OB bill for tackling the problem.

Observations made after attending Sectarianism in Scotland Myth or Reality event at Edinburgh University .

    New Legislation

It looks as if a lot of faith is being pinned on new anti sectarian legislation to curb the worst excesses of the manifestations of “attitudinal ethno religious” (AER) behaviour and it was encouraging to hear some focus being put on the definition of sectarianism, but I also have concerns that come from an exchange I had with the First Ministers Office in October 2008 that I think Prof Devine might find interesting..

My email to them and their reply appears below (above here* nor posted but can be if anyone wants to read it) and what is striking is how the responsibility for tackling the issue has been placed with authorities (police and the SFA) that history has shown since have not acted in accordance with the policy such as it is. Any new legislation has to have an overseeing element to it, some body “who guards the guards” to make sure AER is not at play.

If this means the SG running up against UEFA/FIFA for interfering in football then their reply should be robust in that football is such an integral part of the fabric of Scottish society that it is a duty of government to protect the wellbeing of that society way more important than football. Making any Government funding (or sponsorship funding) of the SFA dependent on the SFA acting in accordance with performance indicators that can be measured would be one way to do this. After what has happened I think even UEFA/FIFA would be glad to help rather than hinder.

    The Role of The Media

It was a pity that the role of the media in what has happened was not given more time because their desire to sell papers is causing an uncivil society and I believe steps have to be taken to bring their behaviour into the debate. The BBC also need looking into for “attitudinal ethno religious” behaviour because it is so much part of the way of things at BBC Scotland Sports they cannot recognise it themselves. I have a revealing exchange with them (now online) about the referee’s strike as evidence.

    http://celticunderground.net/still-nothing-to-see-here-timmy/

Change The Language in order to Change the Debate

In my experience the schools issue is akin to the “paranoia” cul de sac Celtic supporters were driven into to avoid recognising a problem existed in Scottish football. It was only when transparency and accountability entered the lexicon of debate last spring at an Open Meeting of Celtic supporters that put the words into a resolution to the SFA via Celtic that the lid began to be lifted.

The relevance here is the point that I think you made on changing the language. I forget the exact term you used to replace sectarianism, “ethno religious ?” but from experience this is a must. Your colleague Prof Tom Devine also spoke of attitudinal sectarianism and I think the term “attitudinal” too has to become part of the lexicon.

Creating the Future by Acknowledging the Past

Legislation is obviously required to tackle the symptoms of AER but it does not tackle the cause. You kindly agreed to copy a booklet from The World of Forgiveness that touches on Community Reconciliation and I think this approach using Truth and Reconciliation (T&R) principles has to be at least investigated further as a way forward. The author of the main article in the booklet has worked in Northern Ireland schools on a forgiveness project and I think it would be worthwhile Edinburgh University entering a dialogue with him. There is more on that subject at:

    http://celticunderground.net/nothing-to-see-here-timmy-move-on/

    Strategy

If I were forming a strategy for the SG I would be looking at four areas.

    1. Legislation in the short term ( with AER guards on the police and SFA put in place)

    2. Dialogue on the application of T&R and hopefully applying its principles of acknowledging wrong and then forgiving what has been acknowledged in order to change attitudes over the long term

    3. A challenge to the Scottish media to recognise AER is part of their DNA and unless they become more aware of it, they risk creating a very uncivil society in the pursuit of profit.

    4. Breaking the cycle of AER in the home by stopping the sins of the fathers being passed on. Prof Devine made a reference to this element in terms of the role the Orange Order and Freemasonry play. (I have an interesting anecdote on that one about a lad from Bridgeton and a job at SCIAF). This could be done using TV to go into the home to spread the idea of unconditionality in the same way wife battering has been is highlighted.

    Auldheid @ 16.42,

Oh that we had players with that level of technique. Then the ole pass and move would be second nature. Too too often we labour to make not just the forward pass properly but the pass that allows a fellow player to move forward without breaking his stride.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@

Unfortunately all too true . It puzzles me when other managers mention the quality in our side , yes at one time not that long ago , we did have quality in our side , but that label can be pinned to only a few in the present team . Celtic a couple of seasons ago would have hammered Astra . IMHO we could do with adding that much missing quality to our midfield , along with some steel .
