Ivorian link at work again, this time in Athens

774

With three deals done, the pace of transfer activity at Celtic appears to be approaching relentless.  The Ivorian link will have been at work again, as news that we are interested in Olympiakos full back, Omar Elabdellaoui, testifies.  Celtic coach, Kolo Toure’s brother Yaya, spent half a season at the Greek club before leaving last month.

Signing players is always a risk, so getting a first-hand insight into how a player performs from someone who has worked with him daily for the last six months is a huge advantage.  Bear in mind, Elabdellaoui is just one of the right backs Celtic are considering.  This one could run a while.

Reports from the US that we have agreed a deal to sign 22-year-old left back Andrew Gutman are amusing, mostly as he was being trailed as a signing elsewhere in the city.  Great to see that as well as using our Ivorian links, we have plenty of connections at Scotland’s smaller clubs.  If he arrives, hopefully Callum McGregor will not see more action in that position.

  2. CHAIRBHOY,

Just in case you aremaking reference to me,about some people blaming Brendan for our recruitment debacle,I did no such thing.I stated the names of the players brought in,Commper,Hayes,Morgan,Mulumbu,Hendry,Gamboa blaming the scouting dept.Bearing in mind, these guys were hired by Brendan, then he has to take the flak for their signings.Just like they get praise forthe odd good one they dig out.

I enjoy, as I’m sure a lot of readers do, your exchanges with SFTB. I’m sure that the solution is somewhere in between (I’m a fencesitter:-)) and open and honest discussion is the way to hopefully arrive at a clearer way to take the team forward in these financially challenging, in respect to doping, times.

We all know, being Celtic supporters, the systematic influences we face in our daily life’s and again, the same type of dialogue will one day, bring about the change needed to bring about that ole level playing field.

I’d like to thank you both for your contributions of late and to let you know that my arse nearly slipped off the fence today when I read your comment about us just staying ‘one step ahead” of the new club – a view I have held for years.

Thanks guys and more power to your fingers.

  4. If, God forbid we don’t win the league, be prepared for deep cuts to almost every department of the football club.

    Budgeting.

No CL in two consecutive seasons will be catastrophic.

The PLC board won’t survive, regardless of how bullet proof they believe they are – that includes the arrogant majority shareholder.

They need to insure that we win the league, for their own futures at Celtic depend on it.

  5. TURKEYBHOY @ 8:51 PM,

No TB, was not thinking specifically of you nor that post… but now you come to mention it;)

Why would you think Brendan is responsible for ALL recruitment?

Do you think that getting in John McGinn, early doors was a smoke screen and getting Mulumbu in the last knockings of CF2018 was always his plan?

Do you think selling Dembele on the last day of CF2018 without a replacement was all part of BR’s plan?

Do you think that bringing Arzani over from Man City’s Australian counter-part and taking him on loan was part of BR’s plan?

Do you think that pretending to sell Boyata only to put a veto on the transfer at the last minute was part of BR’s plan?

Do you think… we’ll leave it there for now…

Suffice to say, you have been more than willing to call the PLC Board to account when you’ve deemed it necessary. So, no, I don’t see you as a Board Apologist…

THE EXILED TIM @ 8:54 PM,

    Yes, fantasist who…

Well, to my joined up thinking it kinda is…

    Keep~on~keeping~on with the clarity:)

  6. What is the Stars on

    So

Pre season meeting in the Celtic boardroom

Q..What are oyr objectives this season, what do we hope to achieve

    A…multiple choice

    (1) Do everything we can to help the team and manager win the league and qualify for champions league.

    (2) Couldn’t care less really, we are all well paid fat capitalist bar stewards.

  7. 16 ROADS. on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:24 PM

    Deep cuts – unlikely

Catastrophic – no in the short term, if the Huns got in the UCL then yes

Celtic supporters are not capable of uniting to force change in the Boardroom because we lost a League. Desmond wont go anywhere unless someone weighs him in for his shares and even then he might not sell. In addition i wouldn’t bet against Lawwell remaining in position should we fail to win the League. At this point i estimate our chances of winning the League at 70/30. I haven’t seen any significant investments or policy change to improve those odds. The only person certain to leave if we throw away the League is Brendan Rodgers.

  8. AD @ 7.34

    Based on what …

Based on a desire to see the club grow and develop where better performance brings in more revenue from outside the club’s hard pressed supporters.

My base point is that we should be a “buying” club.

Not a selling club or a trading club but a buying club.

If we agree that is the way forward then we need to set a target regarding our annual investment — my view is that we should put in 10% of our turnover into squad improvement.

Happy with the buy young / cheap player recruitment strategy.

So if players want to leave and we sell for a profit that gives us more money to invest in the squad, including buying experienced players to fill gaps in the squad and support the younger players.

We should not be running the club where we need to sell players to keep the lights on and pay the bills — we should run the club to produce a surplus so that we can invest in the squad.

That should be the plan whether the T/O target is £40mill / £70mill / £100mill.

  9. WHAT IS THE STARS on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:30 PM

They failed miserably with option 1 and option 2 in unacceptable so not looking good is it?

  10. DAVID17 on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:31 PM

    ——————————————————-

    No.

The fans have the real power, ultimately.

If we don’t win the league, Desmond and Lawwell will not survive.

    It will be unforgivable.

  11. mulambu ..whats happened here.. seen 1 game he played for us away in europe , against leipzig maybe and he did look off the pace but extremley comfortable on the ball.

Strange hes barely kicked a ball since.. 2 year deal we gave him too after he had no club for couple months.

Get morgan out on loan , was actually not happy when we signed hayes, good player but knew he wouldnt improve us , all we did was make aberdeen weaker which helps the huns. bad move.

Couldn’t have put it better masel if I tried for a month of sundays, well done ;-)

  13. WHAT IS THE STARS on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:39 PM

To date i would say the Board have failed with option 1 as we are out of the CL and PL has openly admitted that the summer business was disappointing. BR has already said this month that policy remains unchanged and there will be no significant investments. So it doesn’t look like the Board will redeem themselves this month.

Titles are won on the pitch by the players, if you miss out on McGinn and deliver Mulumbu and don’t invest in a right back at the Managers request, then that is how titles are lost. It’s that simple I’m afraid.

  14. 16 ROADS. on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:38 PM

“The fans have the real power, ultimately.” – so what did the fans do about the Huns cheating and 100+ trophies being conferred to a Newco?

I agree losing the League would be unforgivable for sure, but the Board would survive. Celtic supporters only power is to walk away. Some will but not enough to force change.

  15. Is this what our great club has now become?

Gamble on signing relatively unknown and unproven footballers, in the hope that we can develop them and sell them on at a profit?

If that is supposed to be the limit of our expectations, it’s totally unacceptable.

  16. DAVID17 on 12TH JANUARY 2019 9:49 PM

    ——————————————

There will be a revolution if we don’t win the 10.

The PLC board are living in cloud cuckoo land if they think otherwise.

    HH. ?

  17. Breaking my self imposed posting ban to say two things.

    1) SFTB well said in all your attempts to talk sense. Madmitch your response was to play the man with a made up accusation because you could not rebut the argument.

    2) If Peter Lawell and the Celtic board are deliberately holding back Celtic to aid “rangers” they are doing a pretty crap job. Seven trophy’s from seven competitions seems like domination to me.

There are too many on here who seems to hate Celtic’s board more than they love Celtic.

  18. If we were 10 points clear in the league, and we should be that far ahead – most people wouldn’t be mentioning the PLC board – I certainly wouldn’t be discussing them.

It’s just that we are all aware of the incompetence that they are capable of.

  19. What is it with CFC transfer inflation?

First we had EK who seemed to cost £1.8mill when he signed 2 years ago.

Then the figure moved up to £2.8mill and then some more.

Now we have JH moving up from around £1mill to £1.3mill and probably more in the future.

Do we just make up figures as we go along?

  20. TH @ 10.22

I should have added — from memory.

That would be grey, very grey memory.

Or I just took the MV figure and ran with that.

If £2.8mill is the figure then we have some explaining to do.

  22. Proudbhoy I was at our defeat at Rugby Park.

Thought Mulumbu was running the midfield till he was taken off. Expected him to kick on in his Celtic career after that. He has not been given a chance. Strange wan!

Brendan has a strange way of dealing with some players, seems to bring them in from the cold then dumps them never to be seen again, Izzy being the latest example.

I don’t really get the thinking behind it.

  24. declan rice looks great player ..still hoping he declares for the republic.

Hope he pulls up outside the GPO with statement padraig pearse style and tells england to ram it

  25. The chat i had with Back to Basics earlier has got me thinking……..when Ntcham scored v the huns this season, Rogic won the ball outside our box, Beaton was 4th official, he was shouting ‘foul, foul, foul..’ as confirmed by Gerrard, the ref was Collum. Was this part of the complaint the huns put in about him, after the St Mirren game?

  26. Superb stuff by John James and his eloquent prose ‘Corrupt then, Corrupt now, Corrupt forever. Hh

  27. Bada…..I don’t think they mentioned that particular incident but you can’t help thinking sg must be cosy with Beaton and a hatred of Collum.
