Jenz parallels with Jota

279

At 23, German central defender Moritz Jenz emerged from the Fulham youth setup two years ago.  A season in Switzerland with Lausanne, then one in France with Lorient, 45 games in total, is apparently enough to convince Celtic to move for the player.

Interestingly, before leaving London, he was in the same Fulham youth team as Matt O’Riley.  It seems likely that much of our scouting of the player took place before he left England.

Last season was a start-stop period for Moritz.  He kept his place in the team until injury kept him out for six weeks until December.  Thereafter he was as often on the bench as the starting line-up, as Lorient struggled to avoid relegation.

The parallels with Jota are also interesting.  Moritz is one month younger than the Portuguese, who also drifted between starting line-up and bench before arriving at Celtic, as his previous club struggled near the bottom of the league.

    Slagging?

I believe consistent criticism of a variety of aspects of out team is counter productive. I don`t think that is `slagging`.

My counter argument? Be more positive about our team. The MSSM will offer all the negativity required.

    —————————————

Not looking for an argument here, but to me, calling someone a negatron is slagging.

I don’t see how consistent criticism of an aspect of our team is counter productive if it is factual and nothing appears to be being done to address it. We have lost 12 goals to PSG, lost 34 goals in 2 Europa Group stages, were one goal away from the worst defensive record ever of ANY European team in 576 attempts, lost 5 goals to an above the Arctic Circle team in pre-season in the third tier Conference League, and lost 8 goals to Bayer while the Orcs were taking 6 off Dortmund. Is there any wonder that there is some angst at the paltry evidence of anything being done to mitigate slaughter in the first tier Champions League?

Now these facts may make uncomfortable reading for some, but saying “ Be more positive” is not going to alter them. Placing your head in the sand is never an effective strategy. Stebhoy was very positive about our attacking play and our prospects in Scotland. He was being realistic in calling for changes, either in tactics or personnel, to at least reduce our chances of being embarrassingly and repeatedly humped.

  3. My point is why be negative now?.We have no idea what team, system,Ange will play in Europe. Is it not possible to just wait and see?.

On Mc Carthy.I don’t think we should have signed him,but we did.Nothing I can do about it,so don’t get caught up in it.Ange has him in every Match day, that’s it.

Sorry, but anyone thinking one player in defence would make a real difference in Euro, nah.

    Maybe Ange will surprise us,

What will help us is a fortunate draw for a change. You know, like the scum get their fair share of.

One man`s slagging and all that. For me, it was meant as a play on words ie the opposite of the positive electron ie the positron.

I might be critical of CONASTANTLY negative posting but I wouldn`t intentionally`slag` anyone.

  5. Regards defending and conceding goals in Europe

19 year old Adam Montgomery made 4 starts for us in the Europa League. Fourth choice left back now and on loan at St Johnstone so unlikely to feature much

Stephen Welsh – 3 starts in the Europa League and one against Bodo in the playoffs. Moved down the pecking order to fourth choice, unlikely to get a game, very unlikely to start

Anthony Ralston – 5 starts in the EL, one against B/G. Second choice, unlikely to start as many games if everyone is fit

Nir Biton – 5 appearances in the EL, 3 starts, 2 as DM, one a CB, one start against B/G as defensive mid

Even Soro got a start, in a game we conceded 4

We had Biton or Soro as our DM in 4 out of the 8 games from the EL onwards

In the away leg against B/G our back 5 was Biton, Scales, Starfelt, Welsh, Ralston.

It’s unlikely we’ll see Scales, Soro, Biton, or Montgomery, in a Celtic shirt again never mind in Europe. They have all been improved on.

Our defence was a work in progress for much of last season – at the end of September we were 6th in the SPL and had shipped 8 goals in two games in the EL. Our central defensive partnership had played 3 games together by the end of the month. We improved to be by far the best defense in Scotland.

Mooy plays in the same position as Calmac, he might not be as high quality as some would like but his an improvement on what we had last season

Our team will have better defensive players than last season who have worked together for longer than when we played in Europe last season. We will be better.

  6. Changes:

Allow trainer to come on and treat an injured player while play continues – as per Rugby Union. If a player knows that the game won’t be stopped (other than a serious incident of course), they will be less likely to feign injury.

Also agree with ball in play time, external timekeeper as per RU.

  7. Celtics left back apperances in the EL and against B/G

    Scales 2

    Juranovic 3

    Montgomery 2

    Taylor 1

  8. Liam Scales started twice for Celtic in European group and knockout competition and people don’t think we’ll be better this season?

  9. Hi. Its been a long time since my last post.

Tomorrow is the day when Artur Boruc will play his last game.

My friends from Legia asked me to say few words about Boruc time at Celtic. I will be the guest of the live panel . If any of you like to leave a message for Artur I can pass it tonight. I’m pretty sure he will he listening TT Legia room

Let him know how much he is in the hearts of us all. Then, now and forever. Even though I had the Packy Bonner strip as a kid nobody between the sticks ha come close to our holy goalie.

  11. Zbyszek – nice to see you posting.

Message for Artur – thanks for the great memories of his time at Celtic. Great player first and foremost but also a man who faced down the bigots and haters and never backed down. Good luck in the future!

  12. The only evidence we have that our defence has or hasn’t improved is very unreliable evidence.

We are playing bounce games for fitness on the back of double training sessions with a team being wholly substituted at some point with 11 new players.

We have no reliable evidence of how our defence will cope at present- to confirm how pessimistic or confident we should be. The players you are adjudging to be defensively weak have just arrived. And it does not matter that our new left back and CB come from strong nations, Argentina and Germany- we only have to remember a £5m Brazilian defender signed by John Barnes to disprove that reasoning.

No!- the only way we can judge how our team is coping is to watch these players perform in competitive matches. Yours and mine’s opinion of them counts for nothing and proves nothing. We have all been completely wrong about players at some point in the past (I thought Jim Plumrose would be better than Brian McClain).

And the first domestic game will not be final judgement time either. Nor will the first CL Group game- regardless of whether we conceded nil or concede six.We will be facing CL teams who take 6 and 7 off better and more expensively assembled teams that us.

Why can’t we give a dozen games or so to see how a team is shaping up?

I see many posters keen to claim that they foresaw the McCarthy signing as a disaster.

I see fewer willing to admit that Kyogo, Hatate and Maeda were seen as punts and projects from a lower standard J-league. Fewer still remind us of how they dismissed Ange as a failed coach who had never been allowed to reign at anywhere half decent club. Fewer yet are willing to post what they predicted about inevitable Hun triumph last year because they saw us abjectly beaten in our 10iar season and could not foresee any prospect of a turnaround. Even those who had said, time and time again, that our winning leagues 6iar, 7iar, 8iar and 9iar, was no predictor of an inevitable 10th, suddenly forgot their own message and were adamant that Secco’s 1iar would inevitably lead to their getting 2iar , if not more. One poster even doubted our ability to remain 2nd in the SPFL and predicted a struggle to gain Top 6.

So forgive me if I am not convinced by the pre-season prophecies, based on limited knowledge and a limited record of prognostication, forecast and augury.

I think that neither pessimism nor undue optimism is indicated. I think Ange has earned the right to expect some patience and trust in his judgement and approach. It will be time enough to hound him when we start failing. And yes, I know our European excursion last season cannot be presented as an overall success. But given the disappointment and abject failure of the previous season, he did remarkably well to engineer 2 home wins and an away win plus two narrow one goal defeats in high scoring matches in Germany and Spain. Yes – we were hammered in Matchday 2 at home but every other game was competitive. We have had many poorer Euro campaigns.

We can bump gums, heads and opinions on here but they alter our prospects not one bit. In the end you support or you carp and protest. I prefer to be supportive until I have reason not to be.

Is anyone really sure that we are beyond hope for an SPFL title and a decent CL showing?

Without any evidence as yet, I think we are a good bet to win the SPFL and I also believe (not know) that we can win a couple of home CL ties and, maybe get one good away result. But I am also pretty sure that we will get one hammering along the way- such is the quality of the teams we will face who spend more in one season than we do in 10- teams that could field a 3rd 11 that would give us a game.

  14. Reality is if we spent 40 Million on a defensive mid and a CH , we would still be paupers in Group Stage Champions League & likely to be out of European Football after 6 games, our net goals conceded likely to be reduced OK but that’s about it.

Look for value spend our money wisely & build up a strong squad,

Go into Europe & give it our best shot , if we make 3rd place in the Group , I’ll be more than Happy.

Number one objective win the League & get back onto Group Stages Champions League, more dosh for us and just as importantly keep the Huns skint,

This time next year we continue to build from a stronger base,

Artur was a truly great Celtic keeper and a tremendous character who had the strength to stand up to sectarian hatred.

A fine representative of his country and our club.

    Many thanks Artur.

    Hi Guys

I will be setting up my Superbru Predictor account again this season. All of last year’s participants have been notified and some have re-joined already. Everyone is welcome. There will be a participation fee for those involved in the fundraising competition and I will announce costs and prizes very soon. I am thinking of using a July- December set of prizes and a January to May competition following on from this. I am suggesting a £15 entry for each of the two halves of the competition, making £30 in total. People can enter for one, both or neither halves of the competition but only those who have paid in will be eligible for the prize pay outs. You can pay the £30 up front or pay £15 now and pay £15 again in January or opt out then.

We will pay out, determined by how much we take in, with the following prizes

Aug-Dec Prize money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the tableAug-May (inclusive) money for 1st, 2nd and 3rd plus a prize for the highest weekly score obtained. We even offer a wooden spoon for whoever finished last (someone will need to remind me who I owe this to for last year).

Around 60% + of the money we raise will be paid directly to charitable causes, we used a local Glasgow charity helping people in financial difficulty last year). We will use the WalkwithShay account again for donations or entry fees. This will be administered by Marc (Celticrollercoaster) to provide independent scrutiny. I will submit details of this soon, when Marc returns from a well earned holiday.

You can enter if you register with Superbru and elect to join the CQN Sentinels pool. The pool code is paysgoon

I look forward to old and new joining in again. If you have any suggestions as to how to improve the competition, please let me know. I will communicate more details shortly. Thanks for your continued support.

Great couple of new Bhoys in, Looking forward to seeing both, Aaron should take a bit off Mac in the middle of the park and help him off the park, get CJ gone now with Jenz now in, he looks keen and if Ange likes him, I like him,

See talk of being champions league ready etc…….

There to make up the numbers Bhoys, we take a water pistol into a machine gun fight.

Just being realistic, when your (any opponent) can out spend you the way most team in the elite tourney can, you can’t be realistically expecting much.

This season is going to be a blast.
