Jenz parallels with Jota

279

At 23, German central defender Moritz Jenz emerged from the Fulham youth setup two years ago.  A season in Switzerland with Lausanne, then one in France with Lorient, 45 games in total, is apparently enough to convince Celtic to move for the player.

Interestingly, before leaving London, he was in the same Fulham youth team as Matt O’Riley.  It seems likely that much of our scouting of the player took place before he left England.

Last season was a start-stop period for Moritz.  He kept his place in the team until injury kept him out for six weeks until December.  Thereafter he was as often on the bench as the starting line-up, as Lorient struggled to avoid relegation.

The parallels with Jota are also interesting.  Moritz is one month younger than the Portuguese, who also drifted between starting line-up and bench before arriving at Celtic, as his previous club struggled near the bottom of the league.

  1. Mooy will be decent in the Scottish league – but we have done absolutely nothing , nothing ! to improve our defensive capability in the midfield for European games – Mooy does not have the speed for that role to recover when we attack.

disappointing window for me thus far and might be Ange Achilles heel baed on his comments.

BTW I refer ONLY to our fit for European football where our good forward play has been shredded by defensive frailties that have not been resolved!

  2. Stebhoy and St Tams neck and neck in the Negatrons Table.

PS St Tams was ahead but posted positive at 2:25pm today.

    Must try harder ,St Tams.

What was factually wrong with STEBHOY’S 3:01 post? Maybe instead of slagging him, you could respond with a counter argument, no?

He basically stated we will do fine in the domestic competitions, but have done nothing defensively to fill yawning gaps that will become painfully obvious in the Champions League.

Maybe we have and I missed it?

  6. Welcome to Celtic bhoys, may your stay be fruitful.

This manager thing isny all it’s cracked up to be, it must be a nightmare trying to keep everyone happy and still manage to be successful, I keep saying it, it’s all about fitting the pieces of the puzzle together and it aint easy, delighted with what Ange has managed so far and I hope and pray we go forward from here.

Thing about the DM for the CL……MM stuff there, whoever we get if we do indeed get anyone and it’s not looking like we will, we would still get pumped by the top teams, we would need to buy a whole new defence and we are not at that level yet, a couple more years in the CL and the money it brings we might, but first and foremost we win the league and qualify then see what that brings, I pray for a good draw, but it’s Celtic so there is no chance of that, but I can dream.

    Man it’s seriously hot here.

  7. Stebhoy and St Tams have valid concerns about our capability to defend when it comes to Europe. Goals conceded statistics would seem to support that concern.

Whether our new signings and just as important the development of our current players and overall play leads to an improvement time will tell.

I sometimes wonder re Celtic news now …there is a “story “ today about Billy the fish Gilmour signing for us on loan …really !?….is this fantasy tale designed to facilitate the Stalkers “ gazumping “ us again ….everyone knows there is only one side in Glasgow that he would sign for …the one that he and his father support and that ain’t us ?

  9. One year tomorrow we started the Ange competative game era.

A 1-1 draw with the midgies.

And we were still under restrictions.

Curiously enough I heard rumours not long after their ironic penalty shoot out comedy sketch …that it was a done deal and that Gilmour was on his way to Ipox on loan

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. Air conditioning working a treat in here.

  12. There was a very good interview with a celtic player last week, i think it might have been taylor.

The jist of it was that he implied that we wont be so open in europe defensively. Sure the manager has a way we are to play, but its on us not to give the ball away so cheaply, and to work hared to recover it should we lose it,

dont know why but i kind of think they are going to go onto a new level.

aye we lost goals in europe, lots of them really daft.

a decent draw and who knows what happens next.

  13. SS

You hit the nail on the head with giving the ball away cheaply, it’s like when we play teams from Europe something seems to come over us at times and we just keep giving them the ball, as you say it’s down to us not to, it’s that simple and I agree, with a decent prevailing wind we could do some damage.

  14. Yesterday morning, Talksport was talking game innovations being proposed and tested, some of them from the great Arsene.

A recent game had players miked up, with body cams on, allowed kick ins not throw in, and full dressing room access, testing the cross over into an immersive experience with AR/VR for the future “users”.

Another thing muted was games with no headers, not being allowed to head the ball in the future.

In my weird meadering way, watching Joe wander around half way up the serengeti, I began to think can you play another outfield player instead of a goalkeeper (bear with me, i know its made up shite),

if you cant head a ball, the goalie doesnt need to jump higher than the players, everything will be about on the ground ……….

    visionary so it is.

  15. When I’ve watched Billy Gilmore play alongside Cal Mac for Scotland it has always confirmed fore just how good Cal is. He is far and away the moat gifted Scottish midfielder plying his trade at present.

  16. RT,

also on CalMac, I kinda wonder why people say he cant defend or tackle, an implication he is the lightweight (he aint broony i know) he aint that bad at all.

  17. Saint Stivs – I’ve long been an advocate for ‘kick ins’ as opposed to throws/ shys. I’ve also seem a compelling argument for a different shaped ‘penalty area’ which is more in line with where high value shots come from.

No headers? Not so much but I get the safety concerns.

    Slagging?

I believe consistent criticism of a variety of aspects of out team is counter productive. I don`t think that is `slagging`.

My counter argument? Be more positive about our team. The MSSM will offer all the negativity required.

  19. HOT SMOKED – Hey Presto as a defensive midfielder, LOL

Thanks for clarifying my post – I’m absolutely delighted with Celtic , Ange and the playing culture he is/has implemented. Probably the best in my 50 years supporting the club in terms of attacking play. loving it

BUT this style needs speed and recovery – Scottish teams have opened us up but not punishing, europa teams always cut us up and mostly capitalize , champs league teams ……you know the script.

The links to the Brazilian and the Argentinian were promising but it doesn’t look like its what Ange is looking for.

Maybe 1-2 more to come in if others leave.

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

As they say we see things not as they are but how we see them. Its always newer players that’s their answer to fit our own idea of how it should be played, with no consideration of coaching and training being able to make a difference, we’re going to give up chances due to the nature of our play, keeping the ball and winning it back quickly is the key to our success.

As others have stated it’s always troubling that we give the ball away too easily when they only difference is that we’re playing a non Scottish team, as Rodger’s stated it’s very much a mindset.

  22. Carpe Diem 63 re your point about Gilmour…I seem to remember that his dad is a Celtic fan but his mother is one of those pathetic Old Firm FC types who hate anything Celtic. When he signed for Norwich, she even refused to hold the green part of the Norwich scart/strip, and this was on camera…
