Key decision of the year for Neil Lennon

1418

If you thumb through the pages of the Celtic Quick News comments section you’ll find a couple of overlapping areas of indifferent form being reported.  One for Beram Kayal and one for the team as a whole.  You’ll also note several contributors commenting that Beram’s form improved after his new contract was signed, settling speculation surrounding the player.

It may be coincidental that Beram’s form seemed to pick up after his future was settled but the fact that this happened a few days after the pivotal 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock suggests a whole lot of what has been going right at Celtic was linked to the Israeli’s form in this crucial central midfield area.

Neil Lennon has a huge tactical decision to make.  Get it wrong and he will not be able to replicate the impressive run of 10 consecutive wins.  Before making a decision, a good place to research would be videos of Celtic’s run up to and including that Kilmarnock game.  Knowing some of the things to avoid is a good start.

CELTIC will step up their interest in Jordan Rhodes if Southampton come back with a £6million offer for Gary Hooper.

Saints told Hoops chiefs they were willing to pay £4m-plus for Hooper earlier this week and were sent packing.

Manager Neil Lennon wants a “No Sale” sign slapped on the 23-year-old, but admits the board will have to listen should a massive deal be put on the table.

Championship leaders Southampton are managed by Nigel Adkins, who was Hooper’s boss at Scunthorpe, and are expected to have another crack at making a deal happen.

It’s understood Celts would be tempted should something closer to the £6m mark be put forward – with Huddersfield goal machine Rhodes, who has been personally scouted by Lennon, the man they’d go for with a hefty chunk of the cash.

Rhodes has hit a remarkable 25 goals in 21 League One appearances, including five in the demolition of Wycombe last wee

Several Premier League clubs have shown interest in Rhodes but only West Ham have a made a firm offer for the new Scotland cap.

Lennon said: “There was an enquiry for Hooper this week, but their valuation and our valuation are a long way off. I’ve no idea if they will come back, but they will get the same answer – that he’s not for sale.”

Asked if he feels the club should knock back any bid for a top player because of the importance of winning the title this term, Lennon replied: “Yes, I agree with that. I don’t think we need to sell.

“If a huge offer came in, I would expect the board to consider it and do what they feel is best for the club.

“But I think that, in January especially, it’s difficult to find a replacement if a huge bid came in and any player was to go.

“It would have to be a hell of an offer before we would even consider it.”

Celtic have had former PSV Eindhoven midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim and Icelandic Under-19 winger Ingolfur Sigurdsson on trial over the past week.

Lennon said: “They played in a bounce game and showed up quite well, so we are hoping to speak to their advisors next week.”

Celtic are also in talks with Lukasz Zaluska over a new deal and also want to keep on-loan Newcastle keeper Fraser Forster permanently.

Lennon said: “Lukasz is in negotiations at the minute and his agent is coming into the club next week, so I hope we get that over the line.

“I had a chat with Fraser this morning and we would be keen to keep him on if we can do a deal.”

  14. Lovely quotes from Steve Lomas re goings on at Cash Converters FC….

“If Rangers really want Fran, why don’t they make us an offer and get him in January?

“I’m not sure what their agenda is here.” Rangers are struggling to find any cash and the £300,000 asking price of Saints chairman Steve Brown may be too rich for the Ibrox club unless they sell first.

  15. Morning Celts and G’day Aussietims,

  16. Tom McLaughlin on

    maccargo –

I have to say, Steve Lomas is well out of order with his comments about Rangers and their pursuit of Sandaza. The player is in the final 6 months of his current contract. McCoist, or any other manager, is perfectly entitled to speak to him and even offer a pre-contract.

What right does Lomas have to tell any manager, “If you want Sandaza, why don’t you pay the money and take him now, rather than for free in the summer?”

Obviously he would prefer to get money for his player, but that is surely for Rangers to decide. The rules are clear, and even Rangers are entitled to play them to their advantage.

  17. Morning Tom,

It was more the suggestion that they could not afford 300,000 I found amusing as I agree they have done nothing wrong by the rule book…..this time.

When the Snp sort out how scotland will function rather than just shouting ‘freeeeedom’, then they will be close to winning independence.

Reading the Lomas comments this morning, not a happy bunny and this always happens when they are threatened by a player. they are gonna sign him and sally talks about talking about a player that belongs to another club but has no idea what is happening to his own players, see edu. sally must be into double figures in terms of player dissys already and this is only his second window, i know they are making up smoke and mirror stories to detract from the little story behind the scenes, but do they realise that it makes sally look silly, well sillier.

Family in desperate race to raise £500,000 daughter suffering rare form of cancer

Jan 14 2012 by Maria Croce

Vanessa Riddle and her mother and father

A MUM and dad have told of their heartache after their daughter’s cancer returned – and their shock that she can’t get the treatment she needs in the UK.

But Chris and Connie Riddle are determined to battle through their nightmare and give 11-year-old Vanessa the best chance of survival.

And they have launched a campaign to raise £500,000 to pay for potentially life-saving treatment for Vanessa in America.

Vanessa was first diagnosed with a severe form of cancer called neuroblastoma almost three years ago. After extensive treatment, she was given the all-clear in August 2010.

But the family, of Loans, Ayrshire, were devastated to discover the cancer was back just before Christmas and doctors told them Vanessa had little chance of survival.

Chris and Connie refused to give up hope and they are now pinning their hopes on the US treatment. It is likely to include specialist antibody therapy, which isn’t available in the UK.

But the treatment needs to start soon and it comes at a huge price.

Sales manager Chris, 41, said: “There aren’t any treatment options in the UK, so doctors told us there was very little chance of survival – less than 10 per cent.

“At first, I felt angry that there wasn’t anything that could be done to save her in the UK. But now I’m putting my energy into finding that help somewhere else.

“I think it’s wrong that, in this country, no money is invested in looking for relapse treatments for this disease. They’re letting children die.

“But it’s a very different story in the United States, where there are treatments available that will dramatically increase her chances of long-term survival.

“We have to take Vanessa there for relapse therapy treatment – which the NHS will not fund – within the next three to six months.”

Chris, Connie, Vanessa and her elder sister Olivia, 15, launched a Just Giving appeal on Tuesday and by last night, they had already raised more than £40,000.

Olivia helped spread the word via Facebook and Twitter – sometimes running two laptops at once.

She says stars including Katy Perry, Lord Sugar, Peter Andre and Dannii Minogue have retweeted the appeal for help to their Twitter followers.

The family have been touched by the numbers of people who have taken the appeal to heart. Chris said: “We’ve had so many messages of support and people wanting to get involved.”

Vanessa added: “I’m really pleased people are trying to help me get better. It’s quite exciting in some ways as I never knew how much people cared.

“I was surprised that a lot of strangers have donated on the website.

“I just want to get back to normal. I want to get back to school and see all my friends and have normal days.I miss not being able to do my usual activities like gymnastics. I feel tired some days but I’m always on my feet. People always say I’m smiling and never look sad. That’s how I feel.

“I haven’t let being ill get me down but I just want to get it sorted.

“My family and friends help keep me positive. People send me messages about how brave I am – but I don’t feel brave.”

Office administrator Connie, 41, said: “You hear of other children with cancer but you never think it will happen to you. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. But you can’t dwell on that. You just have to get on with finding a solution.”

Pretty Vanessa has a wide smile and loves horse-riding, gymnastics, playing the keyboard and going to the local youth club with friends. She dreams of becoming a nurse.

Connie says: “She’s such a caring wee girl and wants to become a nurse so she can care for others. All we want for the future is for her to be happy and healthy.

“It’s such a rollercoaster. You go from the depths of despair to up again at the chance of a treatment and then down again when you realise how much it costs. But I’ve been built back up again by the amazing response we’ve had to the appeal. We’ve got to keep up the momentum as we’ve still got so much to raise.”

Vanessa first discovered she had the aggressive childhood cancer neuroblastoma when she was eight.

Chris and Connie were told her chances were less than 40 per cent. Chris said: “It was difficult to take in and we were devastated. But we were determined to stay positive.”

Vanessa underwent chemotherapy, two seven-hour operations, had a kidney removed, a stem cell transplant, radiotherapy and other treatments at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Yorkhill, Glasgow.

Chris added: “It was the best day of our lives when we were told she was in remission.”

But they were devastated when scans in December revealed she had relapsed. “She has many hotspots on the skull, neck, spine, legs and knees,” explained Chris.

“We’ve stayed positive for Vanessa but we’ve had dark days. We were given the option of treatments in the UK just to try to keep it at bay, or do nothing – which wasn’t really an option. So we researched what was available in the States and found treatments – but they’re very expensive.”

The family are being supported by the Neuroblastoma Alliance UK. The charity’s Marta Hofstrom said: “We hope that people will donate or fundraise for her appeal so Vanessa can get the treatment she needs in the US.”

Then it is back to see some Heineken Cup action and the 6pm game at Twickenham followed by a resume of the other 5th round games,

then the NFL play offs with the Broncos on late in the night at the Patriots after the 49ers Saints match up……

Oh and the cricket Test match in Perth along the way too… Carlsberg Saturdays ….especially if the scores go the right way…..Not sure Mrs Burnley will be wholly supportive of the plan !!

    A great spoting day
