Ladbrokes SPFL-PR warning media to stop title stripping talk

1623

I’m told by a broadcast journalist friend that Jim Traynor, of PR company Level5, started Newco Rangers broadcast media conference yesterday with a warning to journalists that discussion about title stripping was off limits.

The law was that if manager Mark Warburton was asked about the proposed sanction for Oldco Rangers financial doping the conference would be stopped.

Say what you like about journalists, but they regard being told what to ask, or not to ask, as a line in the sand issue. Traynor, a journalist for decades, should have known better than to make such a rookie mistake.

He was told that attempts to subvert discussion about Oldco being stripped of titles is not something that would be accommodated. By the broadcast media, anyway.

Warburton was subsequently asked about title stripping and although he was happy to answer, I’m told, this angered the would-be news-denier, whereupon he “lost his temper”.

Post-conference there was a bit of chat about how they would be able to appropriately report on less-partisan issues, like the Level5 PR-controlled Ladbrokes SPFL, although there was a consensus that “He’ll fall out with everyone soon enough. He always does”.

Sftb. Neil Lennon played at a high level in Europe , understood Europe Still not a massive success. But our club have gone for someone who hardy played in Europe

O.K.- a wee change of emphasis here. How many European games did Jock Stein play in? How about Jose Mourinho? Arsene Wenger? Jurgen Klopp? Bob Paisley? Brian Clough? Alex Ferguson? What relationship is there between Euro experience as a player and Euro success as a manager? In fact, what correlation is there between success as a player and success as a manager? Think of all those multi-capped players like Bobby Charlton, Peter Shilton, Pat Jennings? Lothar Mattheus? Our own Denis Law?

Ronny had 14 Norwegian under age International Caps and a Lengthy playing career in Norway- he has a record of management and experience as a player that places him as capable of managing Celtic- I will re-post my list of Celtic managers with their prior experience again and you will see that Ronny was not inexperienced when compared with most and that prior experiemce did not correlate with successful stint at Celtic. We are just setting a bar too high- a bar that our previous managers did not have to pass. RD is neither inexperienced or a dud- whether he is a good match for Celtic is up for debate but the man himself is a good coach and manager.

Attack great at home against spfl teams who are playing 5 at back at 4 in front of back 5

In Europe teams are looking to counter attack. We leave massive gaps Add that to peter lawell dud Center half a is a disaster

I need to rein in your enthusiasm here. I do not think our attacking is great in the SPFL as much as the defenders there are poorer. Certainly the Molde and Qarabag defence were much better organised than either Aberdeen or Hearts, our two nearest rivals. However, it is definately true that many Scottish teams are seeking to counter attack too. Aberdeen with McGinn and Hayes and Pawlett, when he plays, are actually quite good at it. Hamilton play counter attack quite well and other teams atempt it with various degrees of success from time to time. The difference between our Scottish opponents and our Euro oppositions is not in their intentions but in their ability to implement their intentions.

    Questions

    1. Norwegian league. Answer who cares

    2. Was appointed by lawell as no one else of experience would come for money offered and be forced to run with JP/PL projects

    3. You are serious here. The treble is one horse race for the last two years. And we lost

    4. Nice if you can get it. But he won’t be in Bussines for long

    1. I believe Norwegians care and they have no great respect for the Scottish League which they see, with much justification ( their National team does better and their clubs, note the plural, last longer in Europe than ours do). We are no longer in the 1966 to 1974 era- we cannot afford to sneer at Norwegian teams, Azerbajani teams, Kazakhstan teams, Belarussian teams or any of the improving nations like Slovenia, Albania etc: It is us who are living in the past and failing to see the changing landscape.

    2. All our managers were appointed by CEO’s and Board members. We have never voted in a manager- otherwise populists and badge-kissers like Ally McLeod would get the gig.

Yes, RD was appointed ahead of schedule and there were others considered (Roy Keane again?) but were they considered to shake us up as a fright or were they seriously considered once the financial terms were explored in preliminary discussions. We cannot become a Big CLub merely by splashing the cash and behaving like one. That just makes you a pretendy millionaire- A Craig White character of a club going up against genuine multi-millionaire type clubs.

RD was considered good enough to be head hunted as an assistant coach with a remit to become our Premier Coach within a short period of time. He had to be promoted ahead of time because the alternatives were not as interesting as he was. He fits our circumstances- a coach committed to player development and lower budget interesting buys, rather than someone used to headier transfer markets. We could not attract coaches with similar playing and coaching approaches. Jurgen Klopp was not going to come here. Roger Schmidt was not going to come here. Even Eddie Howe, at a similar level to Tony Mowbray (albeit without the similarities in coaching style) was not going to come here as he was on the brink of making Bournemouth a richer club than ours.

We could have got Alex Neil or John Hughes but they would have seen fan revolts too as we have expectations to attract managers beyond our means and for them to spend beyond our means. That is just fantasy.

    3. I am serious. The Treble is a rare event in our history- it is always hard to win and RD came close (it took blatant cheating to stop him). This is just another example of setting the bar high and being Old Firm minded in believing a League tiitle or a Treble is only an achievement if we have a Rangers to play. There are a lot of Govan Zombie-ites who join in with you in that narrative.

    4. That is a non-answer. How many of the experts on here applied? How many genuinely competent football managers applied, willing to work within our wage and transfer limitations, and how many better ones were overlooked?

I don’t fancy us for a win today. A draw maybe. I wouldn’t see that as a disaster but I’m sure the away support, having traipsed to Dingwall, will disagree.

I watched U2 last night at the Hydro. Jim Kerr was there watching. He sat for most of the show until Bono adjusted the words of a song to acknowledge their presence. At that point Kerr was dancing but, I wondered what might have been for Jim and Charlie.

U2 put on the most spectacular show they have probably ever seen. There will be a lot of folk who read and post here who will have been. At times the futuristic arena and the futuristic show really did leave my jaw hanging open.

U2 kicked on and did their thing while Simple Minds didn’t. For a while there was an even footing. Simple Minds could fill the Hydro for a couple of nights but they couldn’t present 30 years of songs and stories intertwined with unbelievable history, art and passion. The presentation of Sunday Bloody Sunday was a modern update. Justice for the forgotten.

There were other messages too. The refugee crisis, war, family.

What struck me was the togerthness of the crowd, at times lost in the ecstasy not paying attention to the band but to the art unfolding in front of them. Some watched the football pitch sized screen some watched others watching. You may think of Bono as a phoney sell out but a lot of good comes from that togetherness.

Celtic have lost that. We are not a club like no other while we float along waiting for intercession or the return of a fixed game. Celtic were meant for the people and only a return to the people will see us achieve our potential and return to our art,

  15. Any team news for today? A lot of players were struggling with knocks towards the end of Thursday’s game, Bitton, Rogic, Griffiths, Lustig as well as Simunovic and Commons who were taken off injured. Could be a lot of changes. Hopefully Allan gets a run out and maybe young Nesbitt.

  16. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

Catching up on the blog and reading lots of great posts, the thing that really gets to me with the media’s defence of the titles is that it boils down to grown men who support Rangers being able to say the team they support have won x amount of titles.

It is downright childishness, unprofessional and goes against any notion that we have a mainstream media that is supposed to be neutral however,it’s the sheer immaturity of the reason behind the argument that makes not just football but Scotland itself ridiculous.

The competition was being taken advantage of,competitors were cheated and in no scheme of life let alone sport would the cheats be allowed to prosper hence why the titles should be stripped.

I feel embarrassed by the defence of it and hope to God the adults in Scotland will see to it that justice is done!

  17. Auldheid

Thank you yes I did read it, I won’t say it surprised me, but it was a kinda jaw dropper if you know what I mean, only four clubs want answers, if true, that’s a very sad thing indeed, and frightening.

    But it’s a start.

You are one of a number of guys I would love to have met when I was “over there.”

I regret that I did not note your visit more carefully. But I am sure the visit was too short to catch up with everyone you would have liked to meet.

    Mate.

    Lies,damned lies and statistics.

It’s a well used cliche but it does not bear up. Numbers do not lie- numbers are innocent. It is the people who use them falsely- the people that torture statistics, to disguise their true state, that attempt to lie. If you are familiar enough with those processes it is easy enough to spot a lying statistics manipulator. However, Statistics is an honourable profession with a set of rules to prevent lying. Scientific researchers use and scrutinise statistics- they have a jury of their peers who call them out on any false use.

In our limited sphere of football, it is an undoubted truth to say that the team with the most number of goals is the match winner, the team with the largest amount of points is the league winner and the guy with the most goals is Top Goal Scorer- no lying there.

Now perceptions- they must come close to lying- unless you are a moral relativist believing that everyone has the right to believe their own opinions as truth, and, somehow, I do not see that standpoint in your regular “reds under the bed” political posts.

His record with Celtic is deplorable.

Are you using his Euro stats to back up that point, ya oul’ hypocrite? :-)

RD won two out of three domestic trophies in his first year here. There is no planet and no world where that qualifies as “deplorable”. If you set a high bar- “disappointing”- maybe, but then you would have to accord that the one failure to triumph where you expected success, was due to a fair bit of refereeing cheating or gross incompetence- our sympathies should lie with the manager and players who were cheated rather than blaming the victims. It is possible to lose leagues and cups with massive financial advantage over your competitors. Man City do not win everything in England and they lose to Euro temas with a fraction of their wealth. Ally McCoist lost the Championship to a Hearts team with a fraction of his budget, the play -offs to an impoverished Motherwell, and several Petrofac Cups to part-timers. The wealthiest club in the world does not win every title- they just remain competitive and win a fair few, usually.

Now, the Euro record is unarguable. It IS poor and “deplorable” becomes a legitimate word there. I cannot see our fans affording him the patience he got to build teams and systems as he did at Stromgodset. He has had 2 seasons of CL qualifying failure but he has had one year of Europa qualifying success and an outside chance of making it two years. If that happened, I hope “deplorable” would be downgraded to “under acheiving”

Unless you care about “diddy cups.” And honouring our S.F.P.L. masters by pretending that their pathetic wee trophies actually matter.

I am on record in saying that I personally do not care much for the LC but some of my fellow fans do and who am I to say their wishes should not be taken into account. Even if a majority of fans voted to sacrifice the LC, and I doubt they would, we still have to take account of player wishes- they want to win as many as they can, and managerial aspirations- RD cannot afford to let slip winnable trophies when he is trying to establish himself- a crowd which gave him permission to downgrade LC aspirations would quickly turn once they lost a LC tie to an unexpected (and aren’t they all?) team. I am surprised at you dismissing the LC as a “diddy cup”- were you not part of the generation that revered and took long solace from the 7:1 game- what competition was that in, remind me?

As for honouring the SFA sponsored comps? That is a cheap shot. We can only win the leagues and cups we are entitled to enter. Winning the CL is an impossibility and winning the Europa is highly unlikely as the bigger league and richer clubs are taking it more seriously in recent years. So, if we want to experience success, the domestic competitions are our best shot. The league is as much a Scoddish-tainted competition as the SFA sponsored one. I don’t remember too many grumpy Celts when we win one of them.

The world has moved on.It doesn`t give a monkeys about the Clachnacuddin Cup or the Scottish Cup.

Newsflash. The World, in the terms you just used, has not cared much about Celtic except between 1966 and 1974, and a wee bit of admiration for our pluck rather than our mastery between 2001 and 2013. We have been seen as a European irrelevance for around two thirds of my adult life

Why haven`t we moved on ?

Bosman ruling, TV sponsored Big Leagues. CL hegemony. Overall a glass ceiling that limits our ability to compete. The real accusation should be leveled at Celtic during the 1975 to 2000 period when these restrictions were not in place- that was the period of Celtic’s greater failure.

    <Ronny hasn`t got it.He`s proved that.

    Over and over again.

Or at least for two years with Celtic?

We MUST accept that with regret , and move on.
