Ladbrokes SPFL-PR warning media to stop title stripping talk

1623

I’m told by a broadcast journalist friend that Jim Traynor, of PR company Level5, started Newco Rangers broadcast media conference yesterday with a warning to journalists that discussion about title stripping was off limits.

The law was that if manager Mark Warburton was asked about the proposed sanction for Oldco Rangers financial doping the conference would be stopped.

Say what you like about journalists, but they regard being told what to ask, or not to ask, as a line in the sand issue. Traynor, a journalist for decades, should have known better than to make such a rookie mistake.

He was told that attempts to subvert discussion about Oldco being stripped of titles is not something that would be accommodated. By the broadcast media, anyway.

Warburton was subsequently asked about title stripping and although he was happy to answer, I’m told, this angered the would-be news-denier, whereupon he “lost his temper”.

Post-conference there was a bit of chat about how they would be able to appropriately report on less-partisan issues, like the Level5 PR-controlled Ladbrokes SPFL, although there was a consensus that “He’ll fall out with everyone soon enough. He always does”.

I take it you have actually watched our European campaign this year?

Let’s not kid ourselves here -if their was any real sustainable challenge in Scotland Ronnie would not have lasted this long.

Study after study shows that teams with most money win most games and hence most leagues.

Even Fat Salery one of the worst managers in world football let alone Scottish football won two league titles.

Winning in Scotland -with all our financial advantages is a given rather than an achievement

Or do we really have to wait until we lose to teams that cannot even get in to Europe before we start asking hard questions!

PS like always I hope we wipe the decks with RC today!

“Guys like Hughes, McNamara and Hartley would not have done any worse but didn’t have that “European” gloss that RD seemed to possess!”

Forgive my scepticism but i am never impressed by the line of reasoning that states “It could not get any worse, could it?”

There are always 3 ways for any change to go- better, worse, or much the same- too many change protagonists ignore 2 of the possibilities.

RD did not get the gig because he was European. He got it for his prior achievement and his bold vision (yet to be realised, if it ever will). Your 3 candidates include a guy who was sacked from Hibs and Hartlepool, another who was sacked from Dundee United, and a third who won two lower titles than Ronny won and who has managed one top 6 spot for Dundee (finished the season in 8th place on points) and is odds against to do so again. The only advantage they have over RD in record is that they all once played for Celtic- they all have had less managerial success and less experience managing in Europe.

We tried to break a mould and go in a new direction with RD- It has worked domestically, it has failed so far in Europe. It is purely a judgement call whether it will improve or get worse. I am inclined to give more time but I recognise the reality that few have the patience I have. Many believe that another change would lead to improvement. It is a hypothesis proved wrong by every lower league diddy club that sacrifices a manager every 6 months or so and still remains where they are fixed by circumstance (size, population, national playing strength, finance, location, and attractiveness). We are Celtic fans – we, rightly, see our club as the biggest and best thing there is. No objective neutral observer shares our delusion.

Anyway, time to talk of the RC game and to rail against those in our support who would welcome a defeat (like the children’s comedian, Richard Hearne, above)

  5. So we drop our inform player, the one who actually looked like he gave a feck on Thursday? We have a bombscare central defensive partnership so we bring in a left back who continually gets caught out of position to ‘cover’ for them!

Meanwhile the totally out of form Johansen remains an automatic pick.

  7. Relieved to See Allan on the bench, surely Ronny has to give him some game time soon. On the pedantic side I note that almost everyone here spells his name as Allen, it should be Allan,

  8. Gary67, No way was Tierney dropped, He is 18 put in a huge shift Thursday. Push a young developing lad too hard and he is likely to pick up an injury. Tierney is being managed, I totally agree with decision to start Izzy,

  9. It was always going to be a tough game up there. I thought they were on a par with Aberdeen as the best domestic visitors to CP this season.

Loss of confidence and injuries leaves this team exposed and we will need to see leadership and guts in abundance. Time for some unlikely hereos.

P.S. In defence of Blackett, who was truly abject on Thursday, he has looked poor at LB for Celtic but in his previous two outings as a CB for us he looked reasonable. He has had one bad, make that terrible, game out of three. He may not be the answer but he is not as poor a player as he looked like he was on Thursday

  10. In Inverness, but if the weather in Dingwall, is the same as here and it will be, it’s blowing a gale and horsing down. Grimm up north today.

    I hope you’re right.

It’s amazing how many within the SMSM are spinning a nothing to see here narrative. Surely the penny has to drop for them at some point.

Well pardon my scepticism but Ronnie got the job not for his bold vision whatever that is and whatever it is he has kept to himself cos we certainly ain’t seeing anything remotely visionary

on the park, Ronnie got the job because first and foremost he was a cheap option.

Secondly he was and is happy to work under the constraints laid down by PL

  13. The air of gloom after the depressing result last Thursday night has finally lifted and I look forward to plonking myself on front of the TV for the Ross County game on a stormy rain-sodden day here in Dublin. In retrospect I think Molde, a team who sit in seventh place in their domestic league, deserve great credit for the outstanding results it has achieved in this Europa and must be an inspiration for Celtic and others who compete in smaller Leagues. Undoubtedly the fans of all the other teams in our group are scratching their collective heads and asking themselves how these upstarts remain unbeaten after four matches. Moldes 4-3-3 tactics have obviously not been so successful in the Norwegian League nonetheless. Young Blackett who was signed by Man Utd showed an astonishing lack of pace in one on one situations last Thursday night and I like others on here are wondering whatever happened to Mr. Janko.

He’s only played in two successive games, it’s not like he’s been playing every game for the last month. There’s also a two week international break coming up after today. Nonesense decision, particularly given our defensive frailties.

I was watching the Man U v CSKA game mid week, and the commentator said that Phil Jones was rested for the game as he had reached the red zone, and was now more likely to pick up an injury. Possibly all sports science mumbo jumbo but it’s certainly a thing that lots of clubs buy into now.

A useful piece of inspiration we might take from Molde on Thursday would be to hire their manager.

  17. Can’t agree with you Gary, I’n not saying he is worn out or anything like that. You have to ease a kid into a high level of football. Personally I would like the slot shared between Izzy & Tierney on alternate weeks.

Certainly on a bad day in a venue like Dingwall, I want Tierney wrapped in cotton wool,

Visions are, by their nature, unobservable to others. However RD has articulated his vision so we do have a picture of what he wants. He has not achieved his vision and he was always unlikely to reach that point within 18 months of his appointment. How long did it take Swalex at Man U?

Ronny was a cheap option only because we can only afford to be a cheap club. Which comparable sized club are paying more? (I can only think of Sevco and McCoist). It’s not as if he got the job through some under-bidding process. Roy Keane was always unlikely to agree once he heard what the wage and transfer paramaters were- he would have wanted to be more of a cheque book manager. The financial climate has changed and is still changing. The only alternative I see to the Moneyballs (and that term has been traduced and distorted beyond any common shared understanding of its meaning) approach is to attempt the Donetsk/Porto approach and buy Brazilian (obviously, we do not use John Barnes scout, though)

  21. Citeh huffing and puffing for 87 minutes and still haven’t breached bottom of the table Villa’s defence. A defence that has leaked 20 goals in first eleven games.

That is the nature of football.
