Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

Frank Ryans Whiskey. I see where you are coming from but I meant Fletchers wages would break our wage ceiling and big Peter does not want that. H.H.

The first time we are called upon to play against the latest incarnation of the forces of darkness will decide for many Celtic fans how they feel about Peter.

I would like to think we would acknowledge that rangers died and that Sevco are a tribute act but I have my doubts. Peter has gone from declaring that we don’t need them to now claiming it has cost us £10m. Sorry but you can’t have it both ways.

Did anyone watch yesterday’s performance and think if we get a striker in we’ll be ok, we need a lot more than that. I hope Peter’s going to be busy today. I think he finishes at 6pm.

  3. All we need now is ole Harry Redknapp leaning out of his land rover window on Sky Sports News talking about our Virgil “He’s a good player, great player, would improve our defence, who wouldn’t want a player like that, he’d do well down here…..But he’s someone else’s player, I never talk about another team’s player”.

Anyone on the M1, keep an eye out for Virgil in the Little Chef.

Not sure he’d be able to look at himself in the mirror (morally or physically)!!

  5. Seeing as I am the only one who listens to it , 5live just said Celtic are still hoping to do some transfer business and that Virgil is going nowhere.

You may not be panicking but plenty at Lennoxtown are. Chaos and disorganised are the phrases I am hearing.

  7. Yes, a marquee signing would be just fine and we could all have a big party in it to cheer ourselves up.

  8. With Henrik being ‘available’ in November has PL got a masterplan in play? Is a recent philosophy put to me.

I don’t think PL could be that devious.

  9. leftclicktic – I got the impression with Ronnie’s pre match interview yesterday that he had drawn a line in the sand over VVD. If VVD does go then Ronny will look stupid(er)

  13. Hearing that the plan b that we’re looking at could be Nemanja Nikolic of Videoton.

He has a great scoring record and has started this season on fire scoring 7 goals in six games.

There was a time when I didn’t miss games mate. Some things happened that meant I couldn’t go as often as I liked, and so it became more sporadic. In roughly the middle of the Strachan tenure, that changed again because I had some financial difficulties and I had to prioritise my spending.

During the Wilo Flood window Peter Lawwell made that an easy decision.

When I got back on my feet there were issues with work shifts etc, cause I was doing nights on a rotating pattern which left me no time to do much more than sleep. I’ve got to be honest however and say that I had grave doubts about going back anyway whilst certain people were in the building.

The last three years, I’ve had the money to pretty much go out and do it on the day the season tickets went on sale and I’ve kept it in my pocket. I

know this won’t ring true with many people, but I think to pay my money to support a strategy that I know is failing would be an act of hypocrisy. It’s just a personal view mate, and I am not accusing anyone else of anything.

There’s a part of me that’s considering doing what a mate of mine does … going to away games. I miss the football, and I think it would be good to get back to going.

I don’t see me being back inside Celtic Park until some people have cleared their desks though. That makes me a fan, not a supporter. I used to be uncomfortable with the distinction, but I actually think it’s a fair cop.

I have huge admiration for the guys who go every week, especially the ones who have to grit their teeth. I just can’t stomach it.

How much did the wages of Robbie Keane cost for his loan spell? Didnt DD pay for the wages himself? Can imagine Stephen Fletcher would be on less than Keane but still a considerable amount, he would be a brilliant signing for us, can score all sorts of goals.

  16. A left back, a holding midfielder, a creative midfielder, and an ox of a centre forward who can score and hold the ball up. Oh, and a manager–as well as a replacement for the sharp-suited man.

  19. James:

The people I’ve been talking to are no fools, some of them have budgets and targets that are ten-fold that of Peter Lawwells, if they were to perform as he has they’d be long gone.

As a PLC we have forgotten what our core business is all about and that is entertainment on the field, a football field. It really is that simple. Money has replaced passion, spin has replaced responsibility, promises have been broken and a lot of people who think with their brains and not their hearts have decided they been hurt and let down one time too many.

They know their emotions are being manipulated and they can’t equate that with their club, its history, and her ethos.

The last resort is D.I.V.O.R.C.E. it’s hard to reconcile a divorce.

  20. I’m hearing the transfer target list was actually Champ Manager from the PS3 in Lawwells’ bunker. Sumbdy stood on the controller and knackered it.

The last my source heard was ‘Try n think of a player beginning with L’

HH mate. My old man is one of those guys who goes every week, who hasn’t missed a home game in about 20 years.

He is not buying Europa League tickets, the first time in his life he’s made a conscious decision not to spend money on the club.

That will be soul-wracking for him, but he’s made up his mind about it.

The Serb’s a prick if he took Cletic down the line as far as you claim, then changed his mind. His loss.

Amateurish and naive sums up your argument. The Huns launched into deals and wage structures they could not support or sustain.

All to appease Minty’s ego and a bunch of slavering, supremast Orcs.

They BLEW it ALL through behaviour you think Celtic should aspire to.

Shambles. Genuinely feel for Ronny Deila. Could the club have done any more to set this poor guy up to fail? The Celtic job is incredibly hard even in the good times, but the hand he’s been dealt is diabolical. I know he’s made some blunders and might prove to be no good, I just don’t know enough about the guy yet to make that judgement. I hope he gets enough time to be fairly judged and isn’t hung out to dry by PL as a convenient scapegoat for the colossal failure in strategy we’re seeing played out here. On the striker issue, I expected this turn of events given this guy’s press statements over recent days. He’s a full on mercenary – and given how unattractive a proposition we’ve made ourselves, we’re not going to attract that type. We can no longer attract let alone retain anyone with talent. I’d rather we bought no-one than panic buy another Bangura, Rasmussen, Pukki etc. Better to go with and develop what we’ve got than do that. I’ll say this for Lawwell, his strategy of levelling down to the standards of others in the SPFL will make for an exciting, if rubbish quality league this season. No guarantees we’ll win it with the players we’ve got.

Does anyone think we have a policy about not signing players now from other Scottish teams so we do not weaken them?

    ————————————————————-

Yes. Me. I also wonder if this hasn’t been discusse/communicated off the record with other clubs. Although the notion that our scouting team think the Scottish players under discussion are no better than what we have is also believable.

    Seems to be working! ;-))
