Lille, Kille and Club 12

215

Thoroughly delighted for Lille on winning Ligue 1 against one of the world’s most prominent petro-dollar clubs.  Lille have a structural commercial income less than Celtic’s, but have traded like a barrow boy for a barren decade since 2011, when they won their first trophies in over half a century.

In 2018, they escaped relegation by a single point; it wasn’t that they did not have talent, but the resources they had were not spread evenly enough to fill a squad.  In 2019, the For Sale signs went up; Lille sold their four most valuable assets for a combined total in excess of €150m.  They rebuilt and a year later finished second behind PSG.

Again, their best assets were sold, two players bringing in €100m; again, they improved.  The margin of victory in this season’s title was the same as the margin they remained in Ligue 1 three years ago, but what a victory.

Celtic’s draw in Lille and win at Celtic Park in this season’s Europa League give an unsatisfactory insight into what might have been for us.  Talent like David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro were vegetating in the stands until being released in the 3-2 win over Lille in Glasgow.  Others could raise their game, for occasions.

Farewell, Kilmarnock, 9 years after their abstention when the SPL voted to invite Sevco Scotland into the Premier League.  10 clubs voted against the proposal, only Killie, and Rangers – who voted to admit Sevco, broke ranks.  Welcome back to the top flight, ‘Club 12’.

The BBC show a Mark Walter documentary on racism tonight.  Walters joined Rangers in the 80s and shamefully had a banana thrown at him at Celtic Park.  ‘The most famous banana in history’ has that status because of its rarity.  It happened, the support self-policed and the incident is still remembered because it was the last incident of note.  Without self-policing, nothing ever changes.

    Sadly, I suspect you’re correct.

Another day of retro posts, birthday wishes and weather reports I suppose.

All while ignoring the conspicuous absence of our next management team.

I guess there’s plenty of time for that.

Good morning from a bright and sunny North Staffs

Best wishes to anyone with a birthday or anniversary etc

I’m sure there would have been a few hangovers this time in 67.

    All points covered 🤭

    And where’s the bloody manager

Off for a 10 mile walk

I was at the “Mark Walters” game and still find it a source of embarrassment to our club…I recall my mate and I talking 2 guys about 20 years old around to putting their bananas on the ground of the terrracing of the jungle ,which they did whilst looking suitably remorseful .I also remember Celtic playing Man Utd in a friendly in 1986 and some arsehole making monkey noises everytime Paul McGrath touched the ball,I pointed out to this neanderthal that McGrath was Irish and with his racist actions he would be better off at Ibrox which resulted in a pushing and shoving match. Thankfully after the Walters incident the overwhelming bulk of Celtic fans were appalled by the actions of the banana throwers. The Rangers fans taking the moral high ground was laughable considering their behaviour before and since. Its great now to see the Green Brigade’s anti racist banners and all we need now is to ensure that the cringeworthy “cheer up” song is never sung again so that “whataboutery” has no legitimacy.

  4. It’s all fair and well calling out racist behaviour and talking about your experiences but without reflecting on your own racism it all becomes a little hollow.

Perhaps when he was singing he was up to his knees in fenian blood it was just a bit of banter. The guys in the stands would perhaps argue the same. Both were driven by intolerance and hate but only one was highlighted, why?

Is anti irish, catholic sentiment is still ok and acceptable? All stats would say that group remains marginalised by in large I.e. profession, employment, poverty, criminal activity etc

Its hypocritical to call out racism toward your own group only to then racially abuse another minority group. Walter’s should never have been racially abuse and I cringe when I see supporters do shite like that, by the same token he should never have indulged in racial abuse towards others either. Two wrongs do not make a right.

I don’t spend much time on the blog these days but I did read back this morning and apart from the school teacher and the sectarian hatred specialist it was a great read with many great memories being shared. Shows we have more in common than divides us.

Anyway busy morning, a bit of work and then off on the bike, no moor this morning going for a longer easier ride into town and down the canal to Bowling and maybe even Balloch if time allows.

Have a good day CQN don’t let the usual suspects drag the site down.

    Good post. I agree.

The constant division and sectarian hatred that a very small minority on here push every day is so very disappointing and IMO not the Celtic way. Bigotry and hypocrisy in equal measure. We should rise above it.

Highlighting the bigotry and sectarianism and anti Irish Catholic racism that occurs in Scotland is not pushing division and sectarian hatred.

Just in the same way that the BLM movement is not pushing racism.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we are nowhere near the record for the number of days a top team has gone without a manager .

It just feels like a record.

    I’ll post the interview later.

  21. Mention of the bananas being thrown at Mark Walters reminded me of the debut of Milhiljenko (sp) and his compatriot at Celtic Park. I was in my usual place in the Hayshed and this young guy next to me started chanting “get tae f… you orange commie bastards”. I said to him he would be better chanting “get tae f… you commie catholic bastards”, as they were from the Ukraine. To say he was a bit confused is putting it mildly.

A long list of critical mistakes by the Unionist buffoon,in No.10.Mistakes that cost thousands of lives. His latest, not stopping the Indian flights for 17 days, has led to the current crisis. The problem is,do people care.Tory ministers were confident about that during the refurbishing scandal, and were proved right by election results.Boris and Hancock, idiots beyond belief.
