Little surprise in Ledley moving on

287

I remember the early days of Joe Ledley’s time at Celtic, in particular for defending him with pleas to ‘give him time to settle’.  He did settle into an accomplished midfield player but there should be no surprise he is moving on now.

Joe has managed his career well.  He allowed his Cardiff City contract to expire, making himself available without a transfer fee.  Celtic snapped him up but the leverage the player had, without a contract, was compensated by a top contract.

Is he worth a top contract?  Is he worth pushing the boat out, beyond the current top contract level?  Yes to the first question, perhaps, but no to the second, he sat on the bench when Wanyama and Brown occupied central mid in last season’s Champions League.  Celtic put a contract to him but would have known there was a high possibility it would be rejected, as the player would be able to negotiate a contract in the ever-inflating English Premier League.

If his deal goes through at Crystal Palace he’ll leave with my best wishes, both parties probably made the best decision for their own futures.

    On Res12 its rolling along nicely thank you.

    I’ve always liked Malaga.

    Woo woooooo, wasent me that asked big boy, better track back or it it just my posts you look for, looks like it, or maybe you just got it wrong, the post I mean, not res.12

  2. I liked to see Joe Ledley’s name on the team sheet for the work he did in midfield.

    When he did not play as in on the field I noticed the difference in terms of players being closed down.

    If he was not playing but not well I found myself asking where is Ledley.

    A good honest hardworking pro who earned the wages we the supporters paid for.

    Good luck at the other CP.

  3. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

    Personally I’m sad to see ledley go, always liked him in the team. Solid reliable midfielder, chipped in with some goals too.

    But if I’m understanding p67’s piece correctly he was wanting more dosh, so you can’t blame him for heading to the premiership. Not as sore to lose a player we paid no fee for. But C.Palace?? There’s a fair chance Joe will be a championship player in a few months. His replacement, Johanssen, comes highly rated so hopefully he won’t be missed.

    Griffiths… I’m not entirely convinced he’s the man we need. His record shows he’s a goal scorer however. I see him as a Scott McDonald type player, who did a job for us. I’m just a bit dubious about any striker we sign these days, we always seem to have too many and they just seem to stagnate on the bench rather than develop. I just wonder where this leaves Pukki & Balde.

  4. Well, tell me this Tony, how much did Celtic pay out in bonuses to salaried staff (who are not on less than a living wage) as opposed charitable donations?

    Now don’t be fooled by the amount Celtic PLC might claim to have donated to Charity, because maybe the PLC are not giving the SUPPORTERS full credit for their efforts.

    Bottom line mate, honesty and transparency, it seems to be lacking.

  5. Can’t say I’m surprised. I think the players will be disappointed as he seemed to get on with a lot of the lads, it’s the way his career has went and maybe we should have thought earlier to extend or sell as I’m sure we could have got a few million for him at the start of the season.

    He’s not a player that would usually set the heather on fire but I do think he’s the type that allow others to play around him. And he did chip in with a decent amount of goals.

    He was never really an impact player for us so it’s hard to visualise us missing him as we do have a plethora of midfielders who are ready to break through. Might be best for the club overall as it will free up space for those, perhaps with more potential ability, to break through and improve in the team.

    LG if he comes could be a Riordan or could be something special. Here’s hoping for the latter.

    Ledley’s no great loss in my opinion. He could be very good, but only sporadically. Too often he was posted missing and didn’t contribute enough. However, I thank him for his service to the club and wish him well in his future career. His thumping header against the troglodytes in December 2011 will live long in the memory.

    I hope for a more dynamic midfield now that we have Stefan Johansen.

    Leigh Griffiths, you are being given a golden opportunity. Please don’t blow it. Best of luck, son and welcome to Celtic.

    Have seen many a post demanding that Dermot Desmond should plough more of his supposed personal fortune into Celtic to fund all sorts of things. Question is, if you are one of those demanding that, how much would you plough in if you won 100 million pounds on the euro lotto and had multi millions to spare? Would you be willing to risk a few mill on Celtic. If so, how much and what amount you think would improve things to your satisfaction? Personally, I would not waste my money like that on a football team, not even my beloved Celtic.

    ~~~~~~~~~~**~~~~~~~~~~
    Well,for starters,I doubt anyone has demanded that DD throw some money in our direction. I certainly cannot recall such a suggestion.
    Also,it will invalidate our FFP position.
    No,all we are asking is that profits are re-invested in the team. As has been frequently promised by no less than PL.
    AND ON RECORD,TOO.
    Until such times,we will continue to downsize to the extent that we no longer feast on the riches of THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
    Then,we will be told there is no money for players.
    I despair of some of the posters on this site,I really do.
  20. Celtic Football Club was formed to significantly change the lives and wellbeing of local people in Glasgow’s East End who lived in severe poverty and lacked opportunity and education.
    While the world has moved on in many regards, for some in society not a great deal has changed. Charity and creating opportunity remains a core competence of Celtic and its charitable arm, Celtic FC Foundation. Our charitable ethos and social conscious will always remain part of our identity alongside footballing excellence.
    The welfare and development of children and families are uppermost in our thoughts. We believe that the family unit is our number one priority and that children within those families are supported, encouraged and developed fully.
    While we are far from an ideal world we believe that the vehicle of sport, football in particular, can deliver good for society.
    Our priority is to provide assistance to those who face daily challenges within our key priority areas; Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. In addition we offer support in the form of delivery and/or partnership to external charities and other organisations who offer value in the community and whose principles fit within these key priority areas.
    We aim to:
    1. Improve Health
    2. Promote Equality
    3. Encourage Learning
    4. Tackle Poverty
    Hoping Joe concludes that 5k or so more a week at Palace isn’t worth moving for & decided to sign our deal instead. May not put in spectacular performance but for me he’s our most reliable midfielder. Good professional and plenty of experience at CPL level!
    Griffiths will be a Bhoy it seems, can’t remember being so underwhelmed by a new recruit. Kind of feels like WGS’s signing of Willo Flood all over again. Hope he does the business but just can’t see him adding the extra quality we need for European football.
    With Sammy also looking likely for the off come the summer. Unless we sign a couple of exciting names before the window shuts tonight? Then IMO we will have come out if this Jan window all the weaker for our qualifiers in the summer!
    I think Joe has been an important player for us over the last 3 seasons.
    He was a hun skelper at a time when it was important, scored important goals and even took the captain’s armband for a while.
    I was always happy enough to see his name on the team sheet.
    However, nothing is forever – especially in today’s football.
    Hopefully we are building a team with a more dynamic midfield.
    I wish him well wherever he goes next.
  25. I liked Joe,a good pro,but I dont think he will be missed that much.Johanson will play left side,and as I said earlier,hopefully this will give young Henderson more game time.This boy will be a star.Time to get him in.Delighted with this window.We have got our passing midfielder,our striker,kept everyone we could,or really wanted to keep.So from me a big well done to all.
