Longmuir and the Newco job

742

Scottish Football League chief executive, David Longmuir, emerged from the shambles that the game’s administrators got themselves into last year with a remarkably solid relationship with the SFL’s member clubs, indeed, he has been singled out for high praise from the Newco-club.

The flow of sentiment reversed after he wrote to member clubs suggesting Celtic and Newco-Rangers enter ‘colt’ clubs in the Third Division.  This bizarre suggestion was justified on the basis that if Celtic and Rangers join another league, while leaving the rest of the leading clubs behind, their colt teams would continue to bring interest and revenue to the game.

Mr Longmuir seems to have missed the fact that in the event any of the above comes to pass, the departure of Celtic and Newco-Rangers would then create an opportunity for colt clubs to be considered.  Their inclusion now is unnecessary, especially when Newco could potentially enter administration next season, lose players, suffer the mandatory 25 point penalty and be relegated into the bottom division with their colt players, who presumably would also suffer administration-related penalties.

Speculation that Mr Longmuir is taking care of current business until he is ready to move to Newco is becoming hard to ignore.  Newco need to get themselves out of the bottom league first, though.  The colts team idea is certain to be rejected, the question will not even reach the SPL or Celtic.  The 12-12-10-10 idea favoured by Newco is looking an increasingly hard sell, with 12-12-18 more likely.  Mr Longmuir better look after the interests of all his member clubs if he wants to hang on long enough to move straight to Newco. If he loses his ability to be a dealmaker I’m not sure what he can offer an aspiring £100m company.

Football is seldom played on a higher plane than we witnessed from the Camp Nou last night.  Barcelona, until recently undisputedly regarded as the best team in the world, were up against it.  With a league win assured their form stuttered and they had to become the first team in Champions League history to overcome a 2-0 first leg defeat.

They delivered, as did their most precocious talent, but there was a hugely important lesson to be learned from the game.

Milan are out of Europe because they made preventable mistakes which Celtic didn’t make, home or away, against Barcelona.  Even at this level, the team which makes fewest preventable mistakes progresses.

Milan and, after Juventus, Celtic, can spend the remainder of the season pondering the value of putting laces through the ball.  Barcelona, of course, are fabulous, but the question remains, can they do it at home against Annan Athletic?  I’m not so sure.

Aye its not hot enough to melt a Sevconian brassneck only a solar landing would do that job but its hot enough to sort out Mc Cullochs elbows !

  2. I’ll be brief. Barcelona are without doubt a most talented team with the very best of players in that team. However what I noticed and notice each and every time I watch them is the phenomenal workrate by ALL their players. If they lose the ball, the amount of work expended to retrieve it is incredible, something from which all teams could learn. It’s no good being a great or talented player (EPL ) take note, if the workrate is not there. With Barca’s talent and work ethic there in nothing to touch them.

    Hail Hail

This colt team idea was reported last night as having been agreed by Celtic….thank goodness it hasn’t been, since I was raging about it last night and, thankfully, I decided to ‘keep my powder dry’ for a couple of day on the ‘celtic agreement aspect’ ……… What a silly idea Mr Longmuir …. I am also able to retain my HAPPY CLAPPER status ……….LOL

  6. As regards the UEFA coefficient , by the time Sevco ever find themslves in Europe there co-efficient will be negiligible . As such they will never be seeded and therefore have not a hope in hells chance of getting thru the qualifiers.

If they dont get thru the qualifiers they can’t accumualte points to one day become a seeded team. Also Europe is the only arena available to accumulate the wealth to afford the players to get them thru the qualifiers. A perfect storm !!

    Spot-on mate.

Don’t tend to see too much of Barca, other than the CL games this season, but certainly last night I noted that every time the Milan keeper rolled the ball out to say the right-back, 2 players would be on him like a shot. With another player pressing the likeliest recipient, this more often than not resulted in a stray pass, or the pass being intercepted simply due to the pressure being exerted on the ball carrier.

I’ve always believed a large amount of emphasis should be placed on off-the-ball work, both when the team is in possession and out of possession. Let the ball do the vast majority of the work, but as Barca have shown if you make short sharp movements and quick passes the defence can do very little to combat it.

Would be good if the Uni could celebrate St Patrick’s Day with all of its staff of Irish ancestry by floodlighting the tower Green with the easy us of a green filter on Sunday 17th. This celebration is recognised all over the world in areas which have smaller Irish communities.

Seems that a certain individual, who is unemployable and also known in Glasgow as a hopeless alcoholic, had to pull his blog last night.

Something about ‘Celtic and the Barcelona myth’ … in which the blogger wrote stuff like ‘Barcelona failed to reach the quarter-final of the Champions League, so much for them being the best team in the world, ect, ect … ‘they only went as far as Celtic’ yada, yada … haven’t won anything in two years, ho, hum … never got out of third gear, yawn … Sevco are worth hunners ah millions…’

I find it amazing that Longmuir could float such an idea without asking Celtic’s opinion.

So Liam the Fox wants to stop the heating allowance and bus passes for pensioners to help fund more tax cuts for stinking rich Torys. Lets refresh our memories about Fox. He made Adam Werritty his adviser then ferried him around the world at the tax payers expense. He then increased his mortgage by 180k to renovate his flat then increased his expense account to cover the cost. He then gave the flat to Werritty rent free but at our expense.

Sometimes I think you could not embarrass or shame this lot even if you slapped them across the face with it.

I was hearing that there was a meeting with the players yesterday about how to conduct yourself when asked questions by the MSM and others

The players were also told about what is acceptable and what is not, on social network sites

From what I have heard CM got a lot of stick of fellow players

I was also told that before a press conference Celtic players are briefed on what they should be saying and are told the questions likely to be asked

Don’t remember the names of the press officers that do the briefing but it is a male and a female

David Longmuir has conceded league reconstruction might not be pushed through in time for next season.

The Scottish Football League chief executive says it is important the country’s 42 senior clubs “get this right”, as talks continue over changing the format of the league.

SPL and SFL clubs are moving towards an April vote on amalgamating and forming a 12-12-18 league structure, with a draft rulebook sent to all teams this week.

“It may well be the case that league reconstruction won’t happen before next season,” Longmuir told STV. “But it is clear we have to get this right.

“Everyone has their own agenda. I am looking at this objectively and now is the time to put ideas forward.”

So was the Longmuir plan just designed to spread a bit of fud so that the whole topic gets killed for a season?

“Colts” is an inappropriate term for a Sevco youth team.

    How about “donkeys”? (thumbsup)

Think “Dolts” has a bit of a ring to it.

  25. So the plan is to scrub reconstruction, if Longmuir’s plan doesn’t get adopted, so that the Associates can move up a league and fleece more cash from their zombies.

I wonder what his league members will think of that.

He is clearly working to the Green Agenda.

Bada Bing – I know. It makes it worse. She only had to stand up.

Donald believes it is already too late to consider changing the structure for 2013/14.
