Lord Advocate, when the Scottish state bent over football

134

You will not recall an earlier time when the Lord Advocate made an unreserved apology to parliament and the Scottish taxpayer for a wrongful prosecution because it has never happened before.  Yesterday, the incumbent of that position since 2016, James Wolffe QC, did just that over the persecution of Rangers’ administrators, David Whitehouse and Paul Clark.  Each man received £10.5m compensation, an astonishing 20% of the annual Crown Office budget.  The total cost of the fiasco is likely to exceed double this amount, possibly as high as £50m.

That’s not all.  Last year Whitehouse and Clark settled an action for wrongful arrest against Police Scotland for a figure that those in power have decided you and I should never find out.

The case stood on the selective use of evidence.  Police and prosecutors were in possession of the legendary Charlotte Fakes files, some of which proved Whitehouse and Clark were innocent of the charges, but those documents were not made available to the defence.  It is the same modus operandi used to lock up the Guilford Four, who police had evidence of their innocence, but who spent 15 years in prison.

Roddy Dunlop, QC for Whitehouse, demanded answers as to why the arrests and subsequent prosecutions took place.  He is not alone, although I suspect Mr Dunlop, you and I have a fair idea. The Crown acknowledged the prosecutions, which started in 2014, were “malicious” – a huge word for the Lord Advocate to use about his prosecution services.

What’s it to you?  The criminal and prosecution service acted maliciously in the matter of who controlled the assets of a football club, in Scotland, between 2014 – 2018.  The two administrators, their employer Duff & Phelps and those they associated with over the sale of Rangers assets, faced grassroots opposition to their actions.

You may wonder if the might of the Scottish state bent (which it did) in tandem with this opposition (which has yet to be determined).  Opposition MSPs have called for a public inquiry, the Scottish Government do not want you to know what happened, so are opposed to this request.  A status that will hold at least until May’s elections.

…..and they still ask why I’m not a member of the cult?

  1. This Feckin Lock Down and Pubs being shut are driving me even more Crazy…Methinks.

My ” Highlight” of the week so far was having a 20 Second chat with my Tesco delivery Guy yesterday.

I am hopeful that Celtic will provide better ” Highlights” Tonight ? Make no mistake, St Mirren will be ” Up” for this game Tonight and will fancy their chances….there you go, Ive said it…..After I had promised myself NOT to state the bleeding obvious !

Talking of ” PIES”…I was in a Pub in Stockwell St, Glasgow back in 1974 with my Boss/Tradesman…I was around 18/19…and that particular Day we had Six Pints each.

I also had a ” PIE” with EVERY Pint of Lager….My tradesman was laughing like feck…and the wee Wummin behind the bar couldnt believe it !

Six Pints and Six McGees Pies.

In more recent years when Ive been in Celtic Park…Ive had at least 2 Steak Pies….sometimes Ive had Three.

Your pie story is good but wait for this. Remember when the fashion was to wear a suit jacket with your jeans. Well my brother and our mate went to the game one Saturday just the two of them, I don’t know why only the two of them because there was seven of us went together every week. Anyway the mate and my brother sat in the main stand that day, At halftime my brother says do you want a pie aye says the mate so my brother heads down for the pies. He comes back holding 2 bovrils with 2 pies balanced on top of each one. He hands over one handul to our mate and proceeds to make short work of his.

He then goes into one of his jacket pockets pulls out number 3 eats it into the opposite pocket number 4 scoffed into the left inside pocket number 5 devoured next it’s the inside right pocket number 6 gone.

Our mate starts calling him a big greedy so and so you’ve just ate 6 pies and the teams aren’t even back out. My brother says I know and I ate 2 while I was doon there coz I had naewhere to put them.

    TROOOO STORY

That will be King Kenny the Celtic Leg-end that took Murray’s coin and was lining up the signing of Batistuta and Ronaldo 5 mins before he came to Celtic and lumbered us wi J Barnes???

  4. Corkcelt, if you’re on,

with the lockdown, I’ve been looking into the Widow Scallans attack more and got more on the family’s account.

Me grandad, tarmac/macker drank in the Magnet all his life and, of course, then drank in the Widow Scallans! He was famous for stepping out into Pearse Street traffic, holding his walking stick up and parting the traffic, I saw this meself.

    And bhoy did he drink.

Tarmac, me cousin K, his friend and pregnant wife were downstairs.

The gunment arrive, the family say the bomb was chucked in and Martin Doherty kicked it out , it came back in again and was kicked out again. K (a boxer) picked up tarmac and his mate’s wife and got them outside. Martin was on the floor having been shot. K tried his best with him.

I’ve looked on the web and can’t find this specific account and , if the family of Martin Doherty, don’t know this, could you let them know if you can.

My reading of it is, Martin Doherty disabled the bomb; the detonator went off but not the bomb. His actions, imho damaged the bomb. Not only did he physically stand up to the gunmen and paid the price but also saved tens of lives.

I don’t have a way of telling them- if you do, could you let them know and tell them I had me grandad for more years than I might have had.

  5. we’ll find out a lot about the team tonight – after St Mirren beat us, followed by the gloating by their goalkeeper, we should go out there tonight and blow them away!!

Play 2 up front and Ajer in the middle . Brown looked sharp for 60mins in previous but I’d also be happy with Soro starting if he is available.

Rogic has looked better but I worry about his lack of mobility in closing down – st.mirren will need to be bullied and pressed, so I’d go with Christie or Moi (better work rate and hoping they find their touch)

  6. Re Roofe’s ban…I thought if you appealed and it got kicked out the ban got increased by an additional game?

  7. Paul, grow up, you’re just embarrassing yourself now! It’ll be interesting to see how your blogs read once the wage thieves have left the club in the summer. Thinking for yourself could work wonders…stranger things have happened!

  8. Had my vaccine last week. To my knowledge, I haven’t grown webbed hands or been chipped by Bill Gates.

The people who refuse the vaccines will enjoy the opening up of society only made possible by those of us willing to take the jab.
