Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

Exactly… Mr Ashley is about the 4th or 5th picking over the bones of Rangers/Sevco … easy money for millionaires

  2. Picture the scene, a typical Sevconian hostelry… the conversation:

… where the feck is perpetuity? Hey Sammy, can you look it up on google maps?

  3. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL @ 9:44 PM,

Actually he isn’t a grade one referee, he was due to be promoted to grade one, he then could take charge of Glasgow Derbies. So Maxwell blocked it. Thus, ending his promising career (what he was promising and who too, who knows;).

When the incident first occurred, he resigned but his local referee association refused to accept it. Since then he’s been travelling through the ranks. Obviously Mr Fleming was prepared to endorse his Level one status but the SFA hierarchy wasn’t (So of course huge questions over the local associations culture and Mr Fleming’s judgement).

Whether this was due to the fact that with Dallas, Madden and Beaton under the microscope every Rangers game, an out and outed bigot like Brown taking charge would be incendiary.

It’s either due to the SFA finding their moral compass and their misplaced Equality, Diversity and Inclusion file… or it was incessant pressure from the internet bampots:))

    GFTB @ 10:01 PM,

Of course with all these financial shenanigans it’s difficult to know what anyone’s worth but I’d think DD was well on his way to his second Billion.

If DD as a billionaire can find it worthwhile investing time and money in Celtic, is it beyond reason to think MA might think likewise? Yet I’d agree, Football was so much better when we could ignore these characters.

As far as Turnbull is concerned, for me it highlights again the worth of a Director of Football to a Football Club. We need to pay the guy what he’s worth and get him in training next week.

If his agent has filled his head with delusions of grandeur, they need to get real or move on.

In general though, my expectations have been well and truly managed:) but if we get four first team starters in the key positions to enhance our existing squad I’d be happy.

    Hail Hail

  4. Good evening CQN from a very merry Garngad

I have set myself a goal to not get upset this transfer windy…. And I am more relaxed (maybe the 10 pints and 5 hawfs talking).? what will be will be.

I was being a tad facetious with Dermot being “skint” even I realise him selling ground to some London airport was more than DCK probably ever imagined … it’s the internet we are allowed to exaggerate :-)

But real billionaires only make money when looking after every £1000… a bit like us looking after the pennies ?

  6. AULDHEID @ 10:23 PM,

“The debt for equity swap. The most likely driver was UEFA FFP Break Even rules.

I haven’t done any sums or checking but for those accepting shares as debt payment to keep the horse in the UEFA race I reckon its a bit like backing a donkey to win the Grand National after turning into Pegasus.

Well the point is well made:))) So it makes them FFP compliant!? Some selfless humans… far be it for me to judge:) Got to say though if it was cash or shares you get the feeling DCK would gave to turn into an octopus, such would be the ripping of, of arms…

Did you see the earlier discussion on Referee Stephen Brown? It’s interesting, ten years later hs falls foul of the SFA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Plan.

His local referees associationseem to have no such plan, the head of referee development doesn’t seem to understand his employers policy.

Surely it’s time every employee, club and affiliate associations sign up and adopt the SFA’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Plan. Then you wouldn’t have someone chasing a ten year ambition he was in no way fit to perform.

    Hail Hail

  11. GFTB- thanks, she is a wee Darling.???

Honestly her big brother is Celtic daft, and football crazy, goes with the green brigade with his dad, but his love of Celtic and football in general is amazing. My bhoy was winding him up today, saying that What if Leyla supports Sevco, the wee man as quick as a flash ” no worries, when she opens her eyes and sees our room she will be a Tim” his room is decked in Celtic flags, pendants and strips.???

  20. GFTB- hope so, I am a bit apprehensive as to the heat, me being an ex ginger, (now a blonde Adonis) ? but I will enjoy none the less, I can chat for the UK.????

Yet again I booked a caravan holiday for the September weekend, and I bet it’s the Huns away, which I normally hit the pub with my mates. A few years ago it was me and wee Riley at Seaton Sands in the big club and the wee man was up on tables giving it GIRUY, I was stunned…my wife came up later and Riley was conducting the choir by this point.???

  21. GFTB @ 12:13 AM,

Yes quite the Maroom Born Billionaires seem to have more about them than their Motherwell counterparts;)

My point though, as I’m sure you know, was if DD thinks investing in a Glasgow Football Club isn’t total bonkers, maybe his fellow billionaires might take a similar view.

Rangers might be a basket case but that means it can be bought cheap, it means some expertise and structure will produce dividends.

Now we know that in 2015 MASH wanted to increase it’s share holding in Rangers (with the ultimate aim of owningvthe Ibox Club). Mike Ashley’s men were already in prime positions.

He asked the SFA if he could increase his shareholding. As buying more shares would have put him over the influence in two Clubs rule that the SFA had.

In fact, MASH were already over this freshhold, the SFA had allowed it to happen as MASH were investing crucial Club saving funds into Rangers, with the promise of more.

Of course in the interim, real Rangers men had come on the scene, in the heroically named Blue Knights. Rather than give Ashley the permission to increase his shareholding, the SFA, not only refused MASH’s bid for greater shareholding, they censured and fined MASH for taking their current position in Rangers – a position the SFA knew all about and earlier agreed.

In fact the SFA insisted MASH reduce their influence while backing the unlawful, hostile bid from the not fit and proper – Blue Knights.

From that point, it was Ashley that refused to put further money in to Rangers to assist necessary cash flow, it was Ashley that had them reported to ToP, it was Ashley that stymied their merchandising and other revenue streams and although I can’t tell for a fact, I suspect Ashley had a lot to do with RIFC PLC being considered persona non grata in the square mile.

Did he do all that, and the subsequent court cases, so the crippled, vulnerable and in hock to MASH, Rangers, were at his mercy for a good aul GIRUY or did he do it to realize his original aim?

    A more professional SFA

He sells Newcastle United so no conflict of interest

My (sevconian) Mrs loves Santa Ponsa for the 2hr flight … she hit the the big 50 last August so her daughters & pals arranged a wee party in Tenerife (sevconians) she moaned to me why not Santa Ponsa as it was half the flight time … I said it had nothing to do with me … (apart from paying for it :-)

PR67 … I can assure you I will be in the Market Inn… I have actually made it look like it’s their choice :-) although my 10yr old daughter is harder to shake off than Columbo

Do you think Mr Ashley wants to venture down the road of a club from Govan being successful ?

  25. GFTB @ 1:12 AM,

    Ciders still cheap in England!;)

Though I tend to be wary, since an old Gladtonbury experience with cripplecock…

For me, the facts as stated are clear.

Why he’s gone to so much time, money and effort?

    Three possibilities

    – Revenge, pure and simple

    – To realize his original aim of owning Rangers

    – Revenge and to realize his aim of owning Rangers

You pays yer money, you take your choice…

A very good poster JohnBay made a wee joke about cheap cider and the “trolls” jumped on it without realising it was a compliment from a fellow Celtic fan … I use the the “troll” word for only one reason and the reason being I wouldn’t use it and plenty have jumped on the bandwagon … even to my family’s email address but it’s just a wee joke … until the its the perpetrators who want to be victims … am pretty content in what you see, hear or even meet is what you get :-)
