Managerial appointments

725

Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack.  Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.

Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager.  Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock.  They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.

The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate.  Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America.  While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.

Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?

Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible.  But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.  All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

“Sftb-I can only take your word for that, because I’ve never seen anything deleted from you.”

I never saw what you had deleted today but I take your word for it too.

Similarly, I don’t know what Mahe had deleted but, quite frankly, we both got the chance to express ourselves quite fully.

A deletion, especially if it is unjust, can be annoying but it’s rarely a big deal.

The one, I most regret was when Sandman took himself off because one of his swears led to a whole post going missing. That was a genuine loss.

My deleted posts won’t be missed

Sftb-I thought your post regarding cqn and sentinel just before your holiday was a very heartfelt and plea to everyone on both blogs to play nice, and you certainly gave mahe and bmcuwp there place at that time.well played you

  3. Turnbull if we sign would be a good bit of business for a SPFL punt. £3mill buys a project ‘punt’ these days. However should he or his agent believe they can do better

  4. Anyway, any news on the Sevco / Ashley ruling due to be announced today?

Good day to bury bad news

‘My deleted posts won’t be missed ‘

Obviously you won’t,that was my argument, this blog unless mahe had said something would only have had a sanitised version of a very good debate. Not good.

    SFTB

Sandman’s unabridged player ratings on here were the highlight of that day’s blog for me. Sometimes a bit on the ‘naughty’ side but very entertaining .

Re Turnbull; I don’t place all the blame at the agent’s door . He employs the agent to do his bidding , not vice versa.

  7. I think the more Celtic Blogs the better. The only downside I see is that birds of a feather flock together and you could get the situation whereby Posters of the same persuasion would join the blog that best represents their point of view. For a short period all will be well but eventually it will get boring just agreeing with each other,

  8. Turnbull’s agent better hope better offers come in from England or his reputation will take a big beating.

  9. Fix the fecking blog PLEASE. Screen jumping whilst attempting to write. Ads dominating the majority of the screen. Multiple security issues when access site – PC/ Apple all the same. It is not as if others haven’t mentioned it before. LESS FECKING ADDS PLEASE – its your site and your obviously trying to make / recoup money but ffs try and control the amount of shite ad.

PS no interest in changing my PC / iPad settings to suit one blog. I don’t have the same issues with other Celtic blog / sites. This site is riven with multiple issues when attempting to post – sort it please

  10. Football is riddled with players whose career nose-dived when they pursued the lucre.

An agent should always act in the best interest of his client. That isn’t simply to find the highest offer, it also includes finding a club at which the player’s career will flourish. Presumably, finding a club which is likely to win trophies and play at the highest level (ECL) should also factor into the advice given to his/her client.

So, do you want to play at a club where young talent has been shown to flourish?

Do you want to play at a club which has won trophies, in fact, every domestic trophy on offer for the past 3 years?

Do you want to play against top level European clubs?

Or do you simply want to get the biggest wad of cash you can lay your hands on?

Another interesting factor in it all…. location.

Clearly, signing for Celtic does not require Turnbull to up sticks and move south.

Signing for an English club most likely would require relocating to somewhere in the vicinity of that club. How does he feel about relocating?

Maybe he prefers to get out of Scotland. Gee, I can’t think why, what will all the rampant corruption in Scottish football.

But, signing for a lower league English club…. disappearing into nowhere land.

Signing for a bigger English club…. sounds more promising but you will struggle to get a game.

    Hmmm….

    Personally, I’d take Celtic’s offer.

  11. Turnbull’s agent are looking after their client. So they must think they can get something much better from another club than what’s been offered by Celtic. Fair play to them.

    Celtic have other options.

  12. Majority of players are morons, have any of them ever thought why do they have agents?

And why haven’t clubs banded together and insisted all agent fees are paid by the player?

I know Roy Keane and Paul Scholes never had agents, must be of others.

  13. Site is infuriating when using my iPhone, most of the time I stay away unless something develops.

Anyway, my final word on Turnbull is that we agreed a transfer fee that was probably too high for a player whose had one good season. So did Marco Negri back in the day.

I’ll not lose any sleep over Turnbull. Now get a RB and CB in please Celtic.

  14. Given that Turnbull Is a ‘Punt’ – a decent one but still a punt. Shirley his agent knows this as well 12k a week at Celtic for 2 years – no guarantees as to playing or 25K a week at Barnsley (for example) 2 years on the same deal. What would you take?

I’ve never seen an ad on this site, I don’t see ads on any sites. They are simple to turn off, and doesn’t mean you have to have different settings for sites. Though I’m surprised that you aint getting battered by ads on all sites if you aren’t running various ad blockers

  16. Noticed a 19 year old Ryan Christie, when playing for Inverness against Celtic

Noticed a 19 year old John McGinn, when playing for St Mirren against Celtic

I suggested both worth a punt after witnessing them play against us,

Couldn’t tell you who David Turnbull was in his games against us last season ???

Would also point out Johnie Hayes, also stood out for Aberdeen when playing against us.

    Just my view

Oglach…It would be 12k with Celtic for me…moving to Barnsley would be hard…I’d miss my grandweans too much!

Would agree with that – not a player I noticed particularly.

    That said – I’m not a scout.

I trust Celtic to make bids for players and offer whatever wages we consider appropriate.

If it doesn’t suit the player then no big deal.

  21. Ads on CQN – usually related to whether Javascript is turned on or off?

I use the site much less because of this – I can see stuff at all on my phone so have given up.

Javascript on because it’s required for other sites and I’m not turning it on an off just to visit CQN LOL!

I’ve no experience of ipads but pc/laptops zero ads on any sites.

I’ve been on laptops that don’t have ad blockers installed and every site is ad crazy.

Then install the usual ublock or adblock plus addons then all ads go.

I’d also install NoScript and disable javascript for extra hassle free surfing but some feel that’s to extreme

You could install a separate browser app, fire up CQN, disable javascript and only use the app for CQN.

Though I don’t know how you get by with javascript running on all other sites

  24. Adblocker Plus………………..never an ad or an interruption ( of the digital kind, anyway)

    easy peasy user experience…………..
