Moment of clarity from Newco assistant

313

A moment of clarity from Newco assistant manager, Davie Weir on how far behind Celtic they are, “unless you’re spending £100 million or whatever the figure may be and even that doesn’t guarantee [success].”

This season Celtic will earn circa £50m more than Newco, £100m would address two years of deficit. Whereas Celtic are motoring with a worldwide recruitment strategy that’s delivering players ready for the challenge of Champions League football, Newco don’t have the experience or infrastructure to achieve value from a windfall (not that there’s one coming).

All of this talk of cash, on the back of some recently nuanced reporting, suggests Dave King’s election promises to spend whatever it takes are now seen for what they were.

A PR campaign convinced them to take their club from the hands of one of Europe’s richest men and give it to the directors of took so much care of Oldco.

Basically he is telling everyone that it was “a big boy who made me do it and then he ran away”

He maintains that most sports journalists were either too afraid of Rangers or their editors to try and give their readers the truth and those who were not afraid were too stupid to understand the subject.

Obviously fearless investigative is not taught on any Scottish journalism course. Neither is asking an expert to explain a subject you are not familiar with.

Agree 100%, Owen. These are the same journalists who are up in arms over the Section 40 legislation change, telling us that it will “muzzle” them, it’s anti-democratic, will remove freedom of the press, making them unable to speak truth to power. Yet according to Hannon, they were scared to simply state the fact that a football club was liquidated? Gimme break…. EPIC FAIL.

  11. Agreed that the National piece is ‘Puff’.

So there is nothing in any newspaper to-day that is not based on hearsay!

It also shows how journalists are basing everything on what clubs tell them – press releases and recorded interviews ‘don’t misquote us’ – no investigation, no other sources. It’s like the Polis asking ‘Big Shug’ if he did it – ‘Naw’ saw Shug – ‘that’s all right then’ says Sarge! No investigation, no initiative – these folk are not journalists.

  12. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

I think what the National piece shows is that you just cannot believe what a newspaper prints.

Basically, Hannan is saying (for whatever reason) that:

1 Sports Journos know bugger all about finances, balance sheets, profits and losses and all that sort of stuff — which is precisely what Roddy Forsyth came round to saying once his predictions re a quick 4 week administration were shown to be bunkum.

    2. Murray had many sports Journos and others by the balls and they simply printed whatever they were told to print irrespective of truth or consequences.

    3. If you can’t excuse or tolerate 1 and 2 above, even when journo’s knew there was a story to be told, at Editorial level no one wanted to take on Murray and so they just didn’t bother with any investigative journalism for fear of upsetting Minty.

Now, that is all very well except for a couple of things:

    1. When it comes to Celtic, there are those at the club who will tell you quietly that it is their professional and considered opinion that at times there is a concerted attempt by certain sections of the press to undermine Celtic Football Club, to destabilise it, cause friction between club and fans and to generally cause trouble.

Paul67 has written this in the past, and I have been told this personally from within the club.

Now if this is so, then does the behaviour complained of stem from No 1, 2 or 3 of Hannan’s scenarios?

There is a difference between not printing stories because you don’t know the field or understand a story, are afraid of someone, or don’t want a legal fight and printing stories which seek to undermine or cause trouble with little care about whether the stories are true or not.

    2. I was recently told the tale of a well known and pretty well respected sports journalist who:

    (a) Opined that a former Sports Editor and Journo, who is now retired from that profession and is pursuing a career in another area, was undoubtedly in the pay of Sir Minty while working as a sports editor and Journo. Basically, according to the chap concerned, he was at SDM’s beck and call in return for many pennies.

    (b) The journo concerned, after a period of estrangement from Ibrox, was called up and fed a wholly untrue business story by those who were working at Ibrox. The Journo took the story to the editor but added that he did not trust it and would be checking it out through independent business sources and channels.

When those checks revealed that the story was completely untrue, the journo concerned reported this to the editorial team but was aghast to find that it was their intention to run the story even though they knew it was false.

The journo concerned kicked up a stink and insisted that if the story ran his name was to be nowhere near it, and made it plain he would publicly state that the story was rubbish.

The story was pulled at the end of the day but within 24 hours was reported by the BBC — after which the journo was totally carpeted by the editor for not co-operating in what would have been an exclusive — albeit a wholly false exclusive.

Hannan’s piece is of interest because it highlights that there is editorial interference and that very few journalists have the balls to stand up and speak the truth. It also highlights that investigative journalism is filtered, doctored and edited to suit an agenda.

However, he nails his sails to the mast re the BTC decision and the revision of LNS and few have openly said that before.

That will not go down well in some quarters.

  20. BROGAN ROGAN TREVINO AND HOGAN @ 8:15 AM,

The wind is a blowing methinks.

Here is some really stark honesty aimed at editors and revisionists.

Interesting piece by Mr Hannan, indeed, what could have changed his mindset?

The current incarnation of Rangers say they will fight any title-stripping, though presumably not David Murray’s. Their stance is illogical and hypocritical: you can’t claim to inherit the history of a club if you do not accept all the consequences of that history.

Dave King and co are only in charge of Rangers because Murray sold the club to Craig Whyte for £1 before Charles Green arrived on the scene. And wasn’t King involved in the Murray era? That will be the same Dave King who promised tens of millions to get Rangers competitive against Celtic again. Mmmm… To believe some people who opine, usually anonymously on social media and the blogosphere, the Scottish sportswriting mob ignored all this ‘Rangers in trouble’ stuff right through the Murray era and into Green’s bonkers time at Ibrox.

I can assure you, they did not. I was part of that ‘mob’ at the time, and can roughly say that we divided into three parts – those who hadn’t a clue what was going on as they came from a pure sports background and couldn’t tell the difference between a balance sheet and a team sheet; those who were intimidated and bullied by a Rangers that did everything it could to put a lid on scandals; and those whose editors did not want to know, because they feared the loss of Rangers-supporting readers and court action – I’d say the vast majority of us were in that category, as The National wasn’t around to work for back then.

Well The National was around when Martin Hannan did this piece…

    http://www.thenational.scot/sport/14850089.Martin_Hannan__Give_King_a_chance_to_help_end_Celtic___s_rule/

Then… Martin Hannan was not too concerned about being “On the Ball for Sporting Justice” he was much more concerned that NewCo Rangers and Dave King were given Carte Blanche to ride over any rules, including the fit and proper ones.

I didn’t think much of Martin Hannan’s piece then… Suffice to say I think even less of it now. Here was my response…

    CHAIRBHOY on 4TH MAY 2015 8:27 PM,

….Apologies for the long post but having read the article penned by Martin Hannan and some of the comments thereafter I have to say, this is a very poor, ill-considered piece, if, as seems to be the case the chap was once a Celtic supporter.

The reason I say this is not due to the fact that the chap has a pop at Celtic, little new there by the SMSM, it is how scathing and belittling it is to each, footballer, coach, manager, supporter of every Club and the Scotland National teams.

It is a complete disgrace, it says to them, you are no hopers and to ensure competitive Football in Scotland you ought to do everything in your power to ensure a strong Rangers (sic) as without a strong Rangers (sic) you are incapable of producing good coaches, good managers good football teams and ultimately a quality international squad.

It’s as if some sort of bent “Old Firm” duopoly was the best Scottish Football can get. What absolute nonsense. This chap obviously doesn’t know or totally ignores the short term, medium term and long term history of Scottish Football, whichever one it is, it makes him an ignoramus. I’m not being judgemental here, I’m talking literally.

Looking back at the pre-sixties history of Scottish Football Queen’s Park had a golden age, Hibs had a Golden age, Rangers had a golden age and several teams became good enough to win many trophies.

Yet when Celtic were on route to their unique (for the time) 9-in-a-row could you say Celtic dominated Scottish Football? Well to a certain extent yes, but you must put that into context, Celtic won more domestic trophies than any other Club but we had other Clubs winning European trophies, the International team beating the World Champions in ’67, and qualifying for World Cup Finals, Scottish Footballers, Coaches and Managers were the best in Britain and the equal of those around Europe and for a nation of 5million, Scotland was a hotbed of Football talent and Celtic rather than dominate were the vanguard.

So even after Celtic’s “dominance” waned Scottish teams still competed and won European trophies, the International side still qualified for major tournaments, Scotland’s best Footballers, Coaches and Managers were still amongst the best in Europe.

This only changed in the late eighties when Rangers decided that their Club had the right to be preeminent among the Scottish Clubs despite being an also ran in the last 30 years. They would secure backing and funding that meant their financial doping would totally distort Scottish Football. They bought the best Scottish players depriving other Clubs of their talent, but often they resided on the bench or in the reserves not developing their talent, instead opting for highly paid foreign talent to crush the Scottish Clubs.

Their 9-in-a-row would come at the expense of a nurturing Scottish Football environment totally not conducive to developing talent, this continued unabated until Rangers went bust. The defining moment for me was when with one game to go to Qualify for a major tournament the Scotland International team lost their Manager and Coach who deserted Scotland at a crucial time to go to Rangers. Scotland failed to qualify for that tournament.

Since Rangers went bust we have seen a renaissance in Scottish Football, more teams winning trophies, more teams financially secure and a National team we can be proud of at all levels.

Mr Hannan does not cite a single fact or give a coherent argument to suggest how the new Ibrox Club will be any better for Scottish Football than it’s dead predecessor – In fact the reverse is true.

Mr Hannan reminisces about the eighties and the new firm – he forgets to mention their decline was nothing to do with Celtic who were arguably more or less on a par with those Clubs. No it was Rangers financially doping induced dominance that shattered the ambitions of the “new firm”, saw Hearts fall by the way side and Celtic were a hair’s breath from going bust – what did Rangers or their supporters care for Scottish Football then. In fact many a St Georges flag was waved at Ibrox.

It is a clear and undisputable fact that any success Celtic have had in the last 30 years is despite Rangers. What Celtic have done since they recovered from the body blow in the late eighties every other Club in Scotland was entitled to do. Hearts operate out of one of the most successful Capital Cities in Europe, Aberdeen operate out of the most prosperous Cities in Europe, with a proud Football heritage these Clubs could have done something, Celtic have no God given right to succeed, and still today we are their for the taking.

Mr Hannan is also very disingenuous to suggest the new Ibrox Club is comparable in size and has the similar resources to Celtic, in this Season of all Seasons that statement is so inaccurate it must be seen as a coecered, manipulative lie. The Ibrox Club is no match for Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts or Hibs ALL of whom are in a better financial and footballing situation. So without going back to financial doping which is now outlawed as a result of UEFA FFP rules New Rangers have no chance.

His support of Dave King is very worrisome. The New Rangers had a Billionarie at the helm before he was ousted by King, a man certainly capable of ensuring the Ibrox Club had the resources to continue and in the long term compete in Europe.

For me Martin Hannan’s article says, you don’t want the Tim’s winning everything, so allow The New Rangers to cheat their way back to the top. I do hope he’s a bigot, that I can understand, if not what motivated such a wrong minded piece – spite, envy, vengeance or plain greed thatever – you’ve got to feel for the man’s soul.
