Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

  1. EKBhoy, agree on Moyes. Not sure he would be tempted (however in may ways Celtic could be a good (short-term) job for him.

Wholeheartedly agree. But my view is that he is a cross between Stalin & Hitler (“Putler”).

McGarvey more to be pitied these days.

An embarrassment? A bit strong but a reliable souptaker who can’t afford to be choosy

I bet he gets booked again for the telly before M McGlone does.

    Henrik & Lubo odds slashed!!!

Night all. Night wee Oscar my hero. God bless x x

  6. I think we should take a chance on Larsson, with a trusted coach by his side. He knows the club and the support and all it stands for. Sure, he’s a rookie, but people told us on CQN that appointing a rookie in Lennon would be a disaster. They got that spectacularly wrong, so why should we listen to them now?

Yes, it could backfire, but he may also turn out to be a fabulous appointment. Nobody can be sure either way.

I say take a punt and bring in the King of Kings. We won’t know if we never try. We might even end up with Lubo by his side.

It is a fine line in politics between support for a country and nationalism.

I don’t like nationalism personally because it isn’t a political ideal.

    Be honest i say.

People are on here which is healthy(a few cyber punch ups never hurt nobody!)

The hootenanny in McChuills was great as you saw people holding back and having a good debate. Too easy to retort on line. The general opionion that day was that we are all worthwhile across the blog. Was a great day

Yeah, I heard that. Bugger lugs should stick to talking to plants.

Comparing him to Hitler or Stalin is daft. His home city was devastated by fascists and his brother died because of fascists. Russia suffered the most from WW2.

I think Di Matteo is still paid monthly by Chelsea, and this will stop when he takes another job.Same when Mowbray was bagged by Celtic.

I don’t dispute his own personal suffering, and I think what Charles said would have hurt.

But let’s not pretend that Putin is anything other than a regressive, authoritarian bully, with little or no respect for his neighbouring countries – or anyone else that disagrees with him.

I’ve no time for the royals, but Charles’s comment was fair enough IMHO.

  15. Coneybhoy –

But maybe he won’t be. Maybe he will be a sensation. We might as well give him the chance.

“So fare thee well Neil Lennon, you brought back the thunder and left some golden memories. My personal highlight was cheering Celtic on to victory against Barca @ 4am on Mount Everest with a huddle of Sherpas & monks glued to a projector at Namche Bazaar. Hopefully Celtic will appoint a head coach with an ideology and philosophy similar to Roberto Martinez …perhaps Michael Laudrup or at least anyone who is not Tim Sherwood! “

I suggest you read the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, whereupon Stalin and Hitler jumped into bed with each other and tried to carve up Eastern Europe between them. Didn’t work then, but million of Russians (and also Ukrainians) died trying to rectify that betrayal a few years later when Hitler betrayed Stalin. The current Russian fascists junta in Moscow (no opposition in government, and all dissent quashed) will be tamed by that invisible army called “the Markets”. From communists to fascists, who would have thought.

  18. The new boss has to work with little cash so rules out a an experienced manager unless he is Celtic minded

There would have been a confidentiality clause in Neil’s contract so he won’t say about budget restraints, but he has said privately that he was very frustrated with vic being sold under him and none of the money coming his way

Anybody thinking that Celtic plc have everything planned must think back to when BTM left Pl said an extensive search was underway with many candidates only to let slip a few years ago that Neil was the only candidate

Caught out lying again peter eh

Yeah think he’s still getting £100k a month from Chelsea for the next few years, as long as he doesn’t get a job he stays PAID :o) Plus I’d imagine he’d get dogs abuse up here

  22. Scotland’s Roll of Dishonour:

A total of 12 people have now been convicted of offences against Neil Lennon since he moved to Scotland in 2000.

University students Gregg Miller and Neil MacLeod were fined a total of £900 after Mr Lennon was attacked in September 2003 in Glasgow’s west end.

Both admitted breach of the peace and MacLeod also pled guilty to assault.

Car salesman Thomas Ferrie was then fined £500 in April 2004 for road rage after chasing Mr Lennon along the M8 and yelling abuse.

In January 2009, Rangers fans Jeffrey Carrigan and David Whitelaw were jailed for two years each after Mr Lennon was assaulted in city’s Ashton Lane.

The emergence of social networking sites lead to more invective being directed towards the Northern Irishman.

Stephen Birrell was locked up for eight months in October 2011 for posting comments on a Facebook page called “Neil Lennon should be banned”.

Robert Rollie was spared jail the same month after he wrote threatening messages about the Celtic boss on another Facebook site.

David Craig was sentenced to 14 months in March 2012 after he posted a picture online of Lennon covered in bullet wounds.

Hearts fan John Wilson was cleared in September 2011 of assaulting Lennon during a clash between the clubs at Tynecastle.

He was instead convicted of a breach of the peace for running onto the pitch and jailed for eight months.

Christopher Hay was charged in March 2012 with threatening Lennon on a social networking site. He made no plea when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court. No date was set for a further hearing.

Finally, on Friday, April 27 Trevor Muirhead and Neil McKenzie were each sentenced to five years in prison for a bomb plot against the Celtic manger.

    Cheeky debate.

Was Neil Lennon more of an impact for Celtic as player of manager?

I say manager- overhauled the team and won the fans. As a player he was Marmite

    ??

  26. Does Henke have more, or less managerial experience than Neil when he took over at Celtic?

No saying Henke should get the job, but basically, It’s the same people doing the recruiting.
