Newco goes into full regressive mode

782

Football clubs find it difficult to maintain a positive brand image that not only helps its commercial imperative, but binds fans ever-closer and attracts new supporters.  There is always some idiot doing something idiotic that neither the club, nor the support as a whole, would even remotely tolerate.

As a consequence, fans across the country sigh at news reports when someone punches a horse, throws a bottle or generally behaves in a manner that defies the struggles their genetic make-up went through to be here today.  Darwin suggested it should not be this way, but here we are.

When a club’s name is associated with some random act of idiocy, a well-known script is followed.  Suspend the culprit and hope it is glossed-over by many, if not, publicly state disapproval while giving the obligatory “tiny minority” sop to the rest of the support, to let them know you have their back, whether it is a tiny minority or not, or even a minority.

Employee-transgressors are almost universally and immediately sacked.  The chef who got drunk and wrote someone on social media that would never be said sober, has supreme-d his last chicken at the club restaurant.

This is harsh, but them’s the rules.  Clubs want to attract everyone in the family, hospitality business and commercial partner spheres.  Negative publicity, however tenuous, has to be curated through the ‘What would Walt (Disney) Do?’ prism.

So when a club diverges from this path, you’re left wondering why?  Why would a club appoint a DUP councillor and Orangeman, inevitably with all of the baggage that world brings, as their public relations manager?

Today’s revelation in the Daily Record, that Newco’s new PR man, David Graham, referring to Celtic Park as “the piggery”, a few days after his “No surrender” video emerged, will surprise no one.  Do not blame a duck for quaking, material like this is inevitably going to seep out.

But why do Newco want to be represented like this?  Why challenge the modern sports business orthodoxy of appealing to families, high-value corporate spend and big ticket commercial deals?  There is a constituency that will always stay loyal to those with values they share, irrespective of football success or general competency in any other area.

They are circling the wagons ahead of a ‘business interruption event’, either that, or they are the stupidest of stupid people who ever made it through 250k years of largely progressive genetic selection.  No one sailing home on HMS Beagle could predict such a regressive wonder as this lot.

Wash your hands, isolate the vulnerable. If you are vulnerable and need food, shop at quiet times and do not touch your face until you wash your hands at home.  Most of us will get through this, but all of us need to act for those who might not.

  5. Melbourne Mick – just to confirm, it was just a wee idea that I had and floated on here but I haven’t yet ‘officially’ launched it. To be honest I’m not sure I’ll follow it through. 4 or 5 days ago it felt like a good idea. But feels a wee bit flippant now. However, I’ll see how the mood is over the coming days/weeks…..

Yup,the welfare state for the private sector is alive and kicking.we bailed out Banks in 2007/8,public money bailing out the (rotten) core of the capitalist economic system we are using.we are now in the process of certain debt ridden and mismanaged companies getting our funding. As a poster earlier said share buy backs are already being made in the states.

Well I hope to see your smiley big face soon Ger,the last time we were at oldtim67s 21st!! Ha.that was a good night with bigluggy in the foreground of the pictures taken.

    An Tearmann,

Did you know (most likely did) that share buy back was previous to Regan/Thatcher considered fraudulent activity because it artificially sustained share prices and used to inflate share prices to provide bonus and dividends, without adding value to the organisation. Just one of the many ways they introduced immunity for criminal behavior for the financial sector, through changing laws decriminalizing financial fraud for the top end. Thatcher was well aware of the likely outcome, the bitch was implementing a strategy to return us to feudalism. Her death was not slow or painful enough.

  13. Canamalar,

The liberalization of the markets under her from 79 budget onwards is total, everything she done was to transfer public spend to private wealth.the policies of the market Hayek/freidman/chicago school/pinochet type) decides.you don’t hear much bout deregulation now eh,leave it to the market.the public are paying while the market gives out profit.

In the finance sector which you refer to in your post.was rampant in its free marketry.the law behind each line of a companies balance sheet was called into question by whichever company structure owned it( the share, company, intercompany, group)?meant infinite ways for ownership to be defined across the globe, which meant public money went elsewhere.

Big bang from 85 onwards, the bloating of mergers and acquisitions accounting, deregulation deregulation, was all I recall.the cross polination of ownership(means we do not get a true and fair view, more paid opinion biased in favour a fellow group company policy etc

Accounting and finance law also incorporated technological change which overseen further confusion inflicted on those at the bottom.

If you think back, endowment policies, insurance and company failure, right up to current PPI it’s the public purse bailing out error after error in the market

Anyway I left finance in 1992.content 1993 onwards 😊 .excuse me haver :-)

My last 2 yrs with a us multinational.even then multi layered ownership to maximise profit and put the cost onto the public,(grants rents subsidies, free plant, risk) where ever they could.

Those accounting models are deep rooted/layered,the lack of scrutiny inbuilt and

lead to transnational groups intricacies like Google are being found out now.all that evading tax, never hear of it now ??

Bit like the other forgotten word austerity!!

With regret we have to announce that we will be closing from tomorrow until further notice. With STILL no government announcement to order the closure of bars and restaurants, we have taken it on ourselves to make what we feel is the right decision for the safety of our staff and customers.

We have no idea as yet how long we will be closed for but we’re hoping it will be short term or until such time as this terrible virus has passed. Stay safe everyone and we will see you all soon.

As a temporary cheerio gesture it’s £2 a pint all day today.’

    …………………

I live about 100/150 yards from the Tolbooth Pub and Gracies. I didnt go out to see if they were open, especially when I am being told to Self Isolate.

IF I assume that the owners of both Pubs are also Self Isolating in their homes, then they have plenty of time on their hands to update their Web sites to being CLOSED, instead of advising folk that they are OPEN ?

As for selling Beer at £2 a Pint ?…………whats that all about, as by doing so all the pub Owner is doing is ENTICING Folk to stay in their Pub longer, or for MORE Folk to leave their home etc, and still making Money… instead of being at home in Self Isolation….feckin RECKLESS imho.

If ANY Pub offered a pint of beer at 1 PENNY a Pint…I still wouldnt go near it.

What if every Pub decided to offer cheaper drink during this time….?

  16. The health minster “Hancock” on BBC News just now, telling Folk yet again NOT to make unneccesary journeys etc…..and yet on that very same News programme a couple days ago…The Queen ( and others I assume) MOVED from Buck Palace to Windsor ????

So its one law for her and her brood/staff …but for others .

  21. Relatively early days for Covid-19 in OZ, numbers growing as almost everywhere else.

    Australia’s case numbers

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Australia has passed 1,600.

Here is a state-by-state breakdown of the cases:

    NSW: 669 (six deaths)

    Victoria: 355

    Queensland: 319

    WA: 140 (one death)

    SA: 100

    Tasmania: 22

    ACT: 32

    NT: 5

While I see the point in berating pub owners, like all self employed businesses they will suffer significant losses, most likely without compensation unlike the bigger businesses who will be supported from the taxpayers pocket. I’d even go further and predict the businesses who implement zero hour contracts will get the most support as reward for helping destroy unions.

So I can’t blame landlords and shops who are trying to sell off their perishables before the lockdown is imposed, that some are doing it before a national lockdown is imposed in preparation for their own self imposed shutdowns is an initiative that should not be criticised too much, they are doing more than the govt.

  23. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I well understand that we are a long way away from resuming any kind of fitba – but I did have a slightly more radical thought on how the Scottish leagues could generate a bit more interest (money?) and spread it around.

For one season only – have two leagues. A top tier of 20 teams and a second tier of 24 teams (include Brora Rangers and the Southern League winners).

Teams only play each other home and away once – and everyone is playing for their places when the leagues revert to 12-10-10-10 the following season.

It would give some financially strapped teams a guaranteed home game against Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs – and would give every team something significant to play for.

A one season festival of fitba?
