Newco preaching financial risk blind to Celtic benchmark

510

You would be forgiven for believing you lived in a parallel universe if you read Newco Rangers director, Paul Murray, today, who told us, “the benchmark in Scotland is Celtic”.  “First and foremost, we don’t want to put the club into financial risk”, he told reporters.

Yes, I know, it’s supposed to be the company, or maybe the holding company, that’s put at financial risk, not the club, the club can sail on regardless of financial realities. With an impressive sense of entitlement, but we’ll not press Murray to square that circle.

Let’s instead remind him of the roles of a non-executive director.  PricewaterhouseCoopers define the roles of a non-exec as:

Constructively challenging and contributing to the development of strategy

Monitoring the performance of management

Satisfying themselves that financial information is accurate and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust

Succession planning and determining appropriate levels of remuneration for executive directors.

Paul Murray, you will remember, was a non-executive director of oldco Rangers, and that club was well and truly put into financial risk, costing hundreds of creditors money, ending in liquidation.

Businesses have non-executives to offer help but also to be the eyes and ears of ordinary shareholders, creditors, customers, staff and any other stakeholders.  It’s their job to sit at board meetings and ask the questions of the executive management, ensuring the company is able to meet all obligations.

They should be banging fists on the table demanding risks are brought under control.  If they are unable to impose control on management, they should resign.

It was Paul Murray’s role to ensure that financial controls and systems of risk management were robust at oldco.  He was paid to constructively challenge strategy, and to ensure management performed their duties.

In this respect, Murray was magnificent.

22 years ago we went through a rebirth.  The old board, unable to take the club forward, limped off the scene.  Imagine for a second that a few years later Fergus and his fellow directors were swept aside by the old board (who remember saw the writing on the wall and appropriate took steps).

It’s unthinkable.  The benchmark in Scotland is indeed Celtic, where those susceptible to vanity spending on football bling at the cost of financial security will never be the eyes and ears of the club’s fans and shareholders.

These people are perfect in every way.

Recruitment is always hit and miss. Man City have spent £70m on two CBs. Neither of them look anywhere near as good as Jason Denayer.

WTF. Brian Duffy resigned his position as a non-executive director at Celtic, effective from 30 June 2014. No replacement yet. Correct my error, if that sentence is inaccurate, Paul.

Junk, like this article, just lets down Celtic supporters. I’ll always be a Celtic supporter.

    Eurochamp and Jin Con,

Thanks for the replies. I am ambivalent on their use. If they have priority over judgement of contribution and role, then it is wrong in my view. However, if they are part of the mix and used to improve a player’s performance, I think they have merit.I know this will be unpopular but remember Jim Baxter? At his peak, he was a great player but he hardly broke a sweat. He entertained by beating players while walking, and let the ball do the work. If team selection was based largely on monitors he would not have made the team.

I have wondered if this is a major explanation of any unrest that exists, and for RD’s continual changing of the team?

If Ronny was really picking his team based on stats from GPS monitors why then do the likes of Brown, Lustig, Mulgrew and even Commons get games and keep their places??

Tontine Tim: Excellent post from you as per usual. Age has its compensations.

*when I was a young lad my da was delighted when it was announced we would be going with the Kelly Kids, similar to the Busby and Ancell Babes, he loved it that we would be rearing our own. “That’s the Celtic way son” he said to me.

Bit of disappointment as we entered intae the years in the wilderness which now with hindsight might have been as a result of letting Jock leave and allowing Bob complete control.

On his return he stated, and this can be seen in “100 Years of Celtic”, “there’s no use in saying you have control when you haven’t”, and Hugh McIlvanney also mentions that at the first board meeting after his arrival he was asked what Saturday’s team was, in reply he mentioned he couldn’t say due to a wee injury here and a wee cold there to which Bob replied that they were getting told to mind their business, at that the Big Mhan allegedly said “that’s about the size of it”.

8 of the Lisbon side were former Kelly Kids so all was not lost with his leaving just a painful 5 years. And then there were the Quality Street Gang, a joy to watch. That all seemed to end when he was pushed out the door by a chartered accountant FFS.

Now at last we seem to be on the way back with as my wee da said the “Celtic Way”.

  5. just catching up on earlier postings. get the feeling that THE GREEN MAN SAYS SACK THE BOARD thinks we’ve been cheated. he seems quite adamant.

  6. An incredibly tough read back.

One post I need to address is the one by TonyD where he mentioned his attendance at the Fans Forum meeting.

He claimed that’s it’s a closed shop and only those who are members of particular groups are invited.

That’s not true. Both FourGreenFields and I have attended two of these meetings and we did so as Celtic supporters, not as part of any group.

It was also claimed that Tony came onto CQN the following day and stated verbatim what had been said at the meeting and that consequently I’d said that he shouldn’t have said anything.

    That’s also not true.

JP Taylor asked that some of the comments made at the meeting should be kept quiet. Most of those comments were made by Peter Lawell.

Now I don’t particularly like or trust the man but the comments were made in confidence and in the company of Celtic supporters. For those reasons he deserved my discretion on this occasion.

After the first meeting, which I wasn’t at, I asked to meet with JP about a number of issues, one of which was the closed shop nature of the forum meetings. At this point he stated that they were being scrapped because of the negativity which had come about after the initial gathering. I was rather apoplectic at this stage and said that, in my opinion, that was the last thing that should happen. In fairness to him he offered an invitation to the next one on the spot.

That was how my invitation came about.

I could have come on after the meeting and posted comments made by PL which would have been used within days by the media. I chose not to because I thought that by doing so I’d harm Celtic. This was despite my opinion of Mr Lawell.

I should also point out that for several weeks, Tony had claimed that he would be at that meeting.

He was but not by invitation. Apparently, he sat in a corner though we weren’t aware of that. Paul67 can confirm this as he too was present.

I can assure anyone that if I attend any such meetings in the future, and believe that anything outside the Club minutes, needs to be put in a public forum, I will do so. However, I won’t reference anything that will be harmful to Celtic.

I hope, and expect, that most will trust my judgement.

  7. Ps can I point out that I could now attend these meetings as a member of the EC of The Celtic Trust. If I do, I will say so.

With a heavy heart I write today about Kevin.

My wife and I arrived in Sydney 30 odd years ago . Some 6 months after the beast had been slain when 10 men won the league. A game I was privileged to attend. By today`s standards ,communication was primitve Scottish football results could be found at the bottom of the sports pages in the Sydney Morning Herald in the very small print lurking beneath the footy and the cricket.

The Celtic View sent weekly from Scotland provided the main source of indepth information. Late in `81 I read a letter from Kevin to the View saying that he had heard about Celtic Supporters Clubs all around the world . Why wasn`t there one in Sydney ? There is now and there has been ever since then.

The introduction of video cassettes meant that the club was more than a talking shop although one of the earliest games we showed featured a loss to Dundee Utd. There were complaints ” Ah huvnae come here tae see the Sellic lose.”

Sometimes you just cant win. I suspect Paul knows that.

However, neither of us was interested in running our Club .We just wanted it to be there.

Kevin and I stayed in touch over those years and would meet occasionally and share exactly the kind of conversations you would expect from two people who have as much in common as a love of Celtic .

I recently found out that Kevin was educated at St. George`s Penillee , a school where my father had taught. We had a few laughs about that one.

From a standing start Kevin had risen rapidly through the ranks in his workplace to a position of great responsibility but was unchanged by his success. At the age of 55 , he still turned out for his football team and played at a very respectable standard.

Soon after the Dundee game this week I got a phone call telling me that Kevin had died and I knew that I couldn`t let this very sad event pass without telling my fellow Tims about our loss and paying a small tribute to a really great guy and a credit to our club and culture.

May God Bless you , Kevin Gaffney.

And a final Hail Hail .
