No deal for Celtic and Roberts as both look elsewhere

884

After edging ever-closer to a deal for weeks, it looks certain Patrick Roberts will not be playing for Celtic next season. You are well-aware Celtic have been desperate to secure his permanent signing from Manchester City, but I have it on good authority that the club and player are now looking elsewhere.

Brendan Rodgers has both budget and ambition for the season ahead and Patrick was a big part of those plans, but the manager has now moved attention elsewhere (and I don’t mean to Aberdeen).

Patrick blossomed here, in particular during the second half of last season. He is an entertainer in the great Celtic tradition, but I have confidence in the manager to deliver what is required for the challenges ahead.

We wish Patrick all the best and thank him for a great 18 months.

“By your own admission you voted away your nation’s independence into an English dominated Parliament. ”

I don’t remember being alive in either 1603 or 1707 and, if I was, I would not have had a vote.

In the 2014 referendum, I voted to prevent immediate economic chaos and an austerity beyond even that we suffered.

Whichever parliament I merge my vote within will have a majority of “others”. The english, as regards Scotland, are not so bad and you will struggle to make them out to be butchers here in the way that they (and we) were in Ireland. In an Independent Scotland, I would merge my vote with those untrustworthy Edinburgher people and the Doric and the Hebridean- they are as akin to me as the people I meet from Birmingham, Cornwall and Brighton- and as the peole I meet in Belfast and Dublin.

One man’s union is another man’s nation- they are all just dividing lines on a map. Countries have treated other countries badly- but no population or people has a monopoly or even a surfeit of right.

In the end, it is a choice you make to identify within your nation or between your “nation” and others. The Nation state was a 19th Century enthusiasm with Ireland being late to the party and Scotland not particularly interested in that form of partying.

The is not and never has been a straightforward link btwen Irish Nationalism/Republicanism and the Scottish version. Our great-grandparents, grandparents and parents from 1888 onwards never saw any connection as they supported Irish Independence and were lukewarm and uninterested in the concept within their lives in Scotland.

We are now being told, by the adherents of this Ploughman’s Lunch invented tradition, that you are not a proper Scot unless you share that view. That insult to all who have gone before us will not stand.

Even if the majority vote does produce Scottish Independence, I will still not become any form of McGlashan.

  6. My view re Paddy is maybe a bit simplistic or even idealistic but here goes. We all know he can earn mega bucks in the EPL, that’s a given. But, the money we would offer would certainly mean he will not be a customer of a foodbank.

So really, if he thinks he can do better elsewhere, then that’s his decision. If he does not want to play for the most famous team in the world, then thanks Paddy but goodbye and goodluck.

    End of

    Neither are separate sovereign states.

    Both are nations.

  12. Paddy’s too wee for the EPL…. but not for the Champions League. Skill? Or Atheletics? We shouldn’t bust the bank. Ever. No player is bigger than Celtic.

I originally read that as Hayes was paying for Aberdeen’s home kits for the coming season, then I thought strange why would he put his name and number on them :O)

  14. The DUP got most of the votes in the north. If a united ireland is what you want….. talk to them. See what happens….

  15. Johnny Hayes is leaving behind a lot of friends in Aberdeen. In comparison to the no-mark former Dons captain Ryan Jack, the way he has left Aberdeen oozes dignity and class. If he does as well for us as he did for The Dons, he won’t disappoint anyone. Except maybe the sheep, when we next play them :-)

    That’ll do for me.

Anyway, I was just watching re-run of 1-5 and the Simo tackle on Miller. Andy Walker says that you can’t come in to a tackle at that speed…so it is a foul.

Forgive me for the pedantry but I’m a tad confused. There are othe reason we shouldn’t sign Usain Bolt but is speed one of them?

Walker was pretty much bang on the button. Except that Miller fell over Jozo.

Jozo did not make contact with him.

They are a bunch of pedants here anyway! Some like me are peasants too and I gueds some may wear pendanta also.

As for Jozo’s tackle if he had not timed it perfectly Miller would have left the field on a stretcher and we would have played the rest of the match with 10 men. But guess what ? He timed the tackle perfectly- as skilful a moment as any I saw last season

I listened to this fella on the radio a few weeks ago. He stated that the UK had no chance of getting trade negotiators with experience at the wages offered.

    Not at London prices.

He also pointed out that the trade treaty between Canada and the EU took eight years. And that was despite goodwill on both sides trying to push it through. No chance of anything being done inside two years.

His denouement was that “you’re screwed, your fault,no way out.”

A recent rule change did say that you can’t tackle with uncontrolled force even if you win the ball, most commentators decipher this as being tackling with speed.

Jozo’z :O) tackle doesn’t fall foul of that rule but that’s what Walker is going on about
