Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

I am jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet to raise money to support those suffering from leukaemia. I have a VERY short time to raise the money. £550 minimum.

I really need you guys to support this by donating to my ‘Skydive for Stiliyan’.

I am trying to sort out a way to donate on-line but I am unable to create an ‘event’ for this. Perhaps as I recently did the Huddle on Ben Nevis. I am working on a resolution to this just now but in the meantime, please e-mail me at Morrisseythe23rd if you intend to sponsor and please tell me by how much.

I suffer from vertigo so this wont be easy. Pay to make me suffer or for the good cause.

I should be sectioned for agreeing to this. HH

    Or should that be:

Was the £2m offer for Hooper in January the only £?m offer for Hooper in January?

  3. Gordon, the complaint is about unelected people. The EU is a fine example of a huge body with many unelected people, hence my mentioning the EU. Hail hail.

  4. No more p**h about a certain Wolves player being better than Anto Stokes.

in 107 games for Celtic Anto has scored 47 goals – work out the maths. If someone started a rumour that we we looking to sign a striker with a similar goal to game ratio for 3 million we’d be be happy Bhoys.

Cheers – I’ll have a look into that – tell me this can you plan a successful trip months in advance or is it more a case of checking what the waters/forecast is the week before?

  6. You see, what I don’t get is – we expect to get the moon and the stars for any players we look to sell but, when it comes to recruiting players for us – miserly would be the best way to describe our efforts. imo

    ps Afternoon all.

  8. sipsini,

Wouldn’t know the answer to that. My only concern is Celtic and our future. And my real concern at the moment is we have weakened our team at a very important time, we are on a solid financial footing and I don’t see the need for, in my eye’s, an unnecessary gamble.

I really don’t like comparing us to them, past or present, however the dead hun’s lived on borrowed money that they could not pay back, that’s why they are dead. We are in a totally different situation, we have guy’s on board that will, above all else, look after the clubs financial health, we will simply not entertain going down any road that could lead to financial trouble, and quite rightly so.

I get really annoyed when some poster don’t appear to realise that there is a middle ground, it aint our way or the huns way, you can grow the club without placing it in danger. If the board can’t then are they fit for purpose?.

I am not saying the board (not just PL) are wrong in their management, I’m just asking why take the gamble of weakening the squad at an important time when we are in a very good financial footing, Two quality players will not liquidate Celtic.

Are Celtic weaker than at this point last year?.

Why are we weaker after a hugely successful year?.

Are the board happy to be a feeder club for bigger nations?.

Are the board exploring way’s to get the rope from our necks?.

These are a few of the questions I would like answered.

How quickly can we get Hooper up the road as it’s becoming tediously boring. We have to move quickly to replace now or it could turn nasty !

re. your earlier post re the difference in attendance of the MV games v us and Liverpool.

have to admit to being a bit suprised at the disparity in Oz. Had it been in say Malaysia or Indonesia, wouldnt have blinked at the difference. But in Oz i didnt think the EPL had as much sway as that attendance figure would suggest.

    Is that indeed the case?

  11. Kevin doyle is 10times player daryl murphy is. For a club who usually watches what it spends i couldnt believe it when murphy signed for a reported 1.5m

    Knew he wasnt good enough.

Doyle is a workhorse who will gie 100% in champions league and ross county away in a november night.. Will battle and hold ball up plus score few in spl.

I would like to see another striker brought in to partner him. Not sure who but stokes wont score the goals in europe.

Is doyle on a free or still under contract ?

    —————————–

    Well said.

We’ve already signed one striker (Balde) and we are losing one striker (Hooper).

Initial reports on Balde aren’t setting anyone alight, but he needs time. Hooper actually one of the rare Celtic signings that was able to settle in right away.

Between Stokes, Samaras, Watt, Commons, Balde we’ve got players who can do the job.

  13. I would be happy signing Doyle if we also signed a goalscorer as well. Any one of the 4 WGS mentioned and Doyle would form a prolific partnership.

  14. One thing I’ve yet to hear from any Cellic fan is – whit aboot awe thea chances that GH missed ?

I’ve yet to hear that. You see – how many chances did Balde get in the time that he has played ?

A number 10 within oor price range ?

Ah wid go gor the wee ghuy that the hun players were queueing up to boot aff the pitch ibrokes in a SC tie for Killie – Alexi Eremenko !!!

Bladnoch/Tarf is an early season river so heavy and persistent rain is,erm, not unusual in those parts at that time.

There are some really decent places to stay in Wigtown, and pretty cheap too.

  16. Doyle would be a decent buy. He is a different player and would give Balde competition. He’s more a centre forward than a striker and could partner a good goalscorer.

  17. Last season we had Hooper, Stokes, Watt, Samaras, Miku & Lassad. Probably overkill in the striking department.

If Hooper leaves we will have Stokes, Samaras, Watt & Balde. Probably one more required, we’d only need two if Stokes doesn’t sign new contract and we decide to sell, or Watt goes on a season long loan to get more game time.

    Jude,

Hooper is a better goalscorer…….and thats what I want if Hoops leaves.

A goalscorer, not a better player.

Now if that better player also happens to be as good or even better a goalscorer……….

    =====

Again, a lot of smoke and mirrors regarding Anto Stokes scoring in Europe- In total he has played 8 european games fro us and scored 2 goals – not really a bad average for European competitions. Given that he has only played 8 games in Europe it is somewhat unfair to say he wont score in Europe. Perhaps the question should be why NL decides not to play him in these games

Not the worst record but do you know who those goals where against ?

Cause as u say lenny doesnt start him too much in big games, i like stokes by the way but really he should have been looking at 2/3 goals between those cliftonville games.

I wish he would score and play in every game, he proudly shows the tri colour turn ups when wearing the black jersey. Thats enough for me.
