Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage. They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player. Cash wise, they did all right.
They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool. By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m. Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.
Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).
Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool. By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.
In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory. We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.
On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.
Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services. In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand. City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.
One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.
Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

The east coast rivers on a whole are mostly early rivers (that’s when they get the rain).
The west coast rivers run from june (not a lot of fish) through to october (rivers near the sea tend to be better around august).
The river Ifish most often is the Orchy which is best from august onwards (reasonably priced as well some beats are available from £20 per day)
Hope this helps
I have a wee prediction for you all – Celtic accounts must be due out soonish.
I betcha we have a small net debt (somehow)!

You mentioned in your post…transfer fee plus wages…if my mind serves me right that was a usual deadco ploy to feed to the msm, to make out it was the actual transfer deal.
The point being were they accounting ebt’s into the equation when realeasing their quotes?
With everyone quoting the 22M from UEFA plus ticket money and matchday merchandisising it was a great year financially for the club.
However no one has mentioned the size of the bonuses that players and staff receive for reaching such heights. I personnaly do not know how much that equates to, more than a few million I would imagine.
As for the transfer of VM and Hoops this money will be paid in stages and therefore should not be lumped on to the CL cash for last year.
Long may this financial state continue and in doing so will enable us to dominate for many amny years to come as long as PL does his bit and the legend that is NFL and his coaching team do theirs.
HH and loving it.

The Tay system opens in January with most other rivers starting their seasons in Feb. I’ve fished a few beats on the Tay and the most enjoyable for me was Dalguise.
The North Esk is well worth a go for springers whereas its wee cousin the South Esk is more of a back end river. The Nith and other Solway rivers used to be open until the end of November but I don’t know if that’s still the case. I’ve fished the town water in Dumfries and the Drumlanrig castle beat (3 miles double bank).
So December is really the only month where no salmon fishing can be had. Google salmon fishing in Scotland and you’ll find something there to suit your requirement. Good luck.
Mon ra salmon………………eh eh, I mean mon ra hoops.

Is it much better to try and organise things seperately – accomodation etc? as i imagine the “packages” twist the arm somewhat…
would I be right in saying that most of the best spots would be properly rural and away from friendly pubs/villages etc

Such is their desperation to see us potentially weakened that the Herald’s website sports headline currently reads “Gary Hoopers signs for Norwich”
Only later in the body of the piece do grey mention personal terms negotiations are ongoing.
A link on a previous QPR story tells us Harry Redknapps comments were made prior to Norwich stepping in and signing Hooper.
Hurting, hurting Huns!
Kayal,
Finboggasson great shout, Swansea just got Bony to add to Michu .
Reckon Guidetti would come to us before Swansea as i can see Laudrup leaving them end of this season i f he has another decent season down there.

PL must be looking at the monies we have made in the last year and thinking of replacing Gary with a BETTER player? We aren’t asking to be pumped into wild debts but I would like to see £7M spent on a player. We can be the Porto of 2004
……………………………………………………………………………………………
Sadly, because Celtic play in Scotland, any player valued at 7 million will not want to play there. Furthermore, if he is that standard of player, he will command wages far in excess of what Celtic can pay. It’s not Celtic’s fault, it’s not Neil’s fault, it’s not DD’s fault and it’s not even PL’s fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gordon J, I assume the author of that report is also upset with the unelected and corrupt members of the EU? I would rather have an unelected priest than a Mandelson type on such bodies.

Kayal,
Finnboggason is a great shout.
Am I the only one who thinks / hopes that Gary Hooper will stay ?
Get Izzie back to his best – better balance to the team – watch the
amount of chances created increase – watch GH become a £15 mill
player for January. imo

Guidetti is a good call. Last year of contract, loaned out last year to Feyenoord and scored a bundle, right age, just become an international, no place for him at Man City…. maybe on daft wages already though?
Matej Vydra also seems to be surplus to requirements at Udinese. Scored a bundle for Watford on loan – was apparently pursued by Norwich but presumably not any more. May have other EPL teams after him too though.
Hosiner, Toure, Rudnevs… etc.. competition for these guys.
Good to see ‘Arry getting it shoved up ‘im.
Scunnered me when he refused to pay more than £2Mill for Stan………Didny get him either ;-)

Darryl Murphy is nowhere near Doyle’s level. It is a simple comparison to make but not valid.

John O Neil,
I’m not sure what EU membership has got to do with it?
Anyone can be a member of a local council – all they have to do is be elected. In my view that should be the end of the matter – no body should have a place on a local authority committee by right.
£2m offer for Hooper in January?!
No wonder Lennon sounded so irrate at the time. What a derisory offer for a player who had been signed for the same fee but since then had scored in the Champions League and been called up for England (even though he pulled out de to injury).
Glad we are getting a decent price now though.
Scratching my head at any calls for £7m signings. Time and time again in the last few years our best signings have been guys I’ve never heard of signed for modest fees desperate to further their career. Let John Park do his work, it’s served us well so far.
Is Kenny Deuchar still available? 299 goals a season, we should move quickly for the good doctor.
Miku, Lassad, Hooper, Bangura that’s 4 strikers we lost.
W need at least another two especially if Watt is going on loan.
Add a replacemnt for Wanyama plus the left sided player. That’s 4 players the manager will want.
Can see Lustig moving to centre half to parner Van Dijk when Matthews returns.
On the subject of qualification to CL etc, anyone else of the opinion that the CL should revert to being exactly that, for Champions? I understand that Champions of certain “smaller” countries would need to play-off or something similar e.g San Marino, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Albania etc, but surely the Champions of countries such as Czech Rep, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Sweden, Norway, Bulgaria, Finland and of course Scotland (and many others) should be guaranteed a place at the top table for winning their national championships before teams finishing 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in their leagues? (currently England, Spain & Germany)
Yes, of course it’s “all about the mony, money, money” but come on Mr Platini, lets get a more level playing field here. Time for a re-think!
Why do some posters on here equate Kevin Doyle with Daryl Murphy.
How much football do you have to watch to think that these two players possess the same ability.
Simple excercise for you.
Check out their respective international careers.
You might win more arguments when you deal in facts.
@Belfastbhoy0
Not necessarily, yes remote places are best (the best river I fished is a 9 mile walk into the wilderness (after a 6 hour drive from Glasgow). The Leven can be good and it is in the middle of dumbarton/balloch (as well as the Endrick, a bit more rural but still near villages/pubs etc) The Orchy has beats that run through the village and you are never more than 3 or 4 miles from a pub when you are on the river
Is the £2m offer for Hooper in January the only £?m offer for Hooper in January?
