Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Is Kenny Deuchar still available? 299 goals a season, we should move quickly for the good doctor.

Frankiebhoy is still scoring regularly in ‘mature’ circles.

  7. To be fair it was Garry Parker that spotted Hooper as he was scouting for Viall for MON at the time and recommended him to Lenny.

  8. If Hooper goes to Norwich he’s going to have to up his all-round game for the EPL. Norwich have to fight like demons each point in every game to keep above the relegation zone.

Hoops is player and good finisher………when he’s interested. Sometimes, with us, he slipped into a comfort zone which will not be tolerated down there.

I expect he’ll soon get the message and will do ok.

    Good luck Hoops

The Big Difference in Celtic getting 20,000 against Melbourne Victory..and Liverpool getting 95,000..

Of the 20,000 say 18,000 would have been Scottish/Irish..

The 95,000 that watched Liverpool last night there was Probably 5,000 to 7,000 Scoucers/English..

    Why..EPL/SKY/FOXTEL

Probably 85,000 had Never seen Liverpool play before..

  11. Newcastle did the dirty on Chris Hughton and would’ve been more successful had they kept him at the club. I think Hooper will do well under Chris at Norwich.

Regarding the new away strip – I thought we were finished with the look-a-like Norwich City gear.

  12. I don’t like the new away strip. I don’t like the new home kit. What’s wrong with keeping things simple and tradtional ? I won’t by buying either, not even as presents for relatives.

    Marti Sandino,

whilst I agree re the Hoops strip, what is the traditional away kit?

We have had white, green, black, yellow (not to mention a couple of horror shows in the 90s) so i dont really see where the traditional part comes in for the away kit.

Have to admit I like this new one and will buy it. probably instead of the Hoops one!

But i do agree with you on the Hoops. The white mini-hoops have diluted the Green Hoops and that just doesnt sit well with me. Even though my son loves his new strip and tells me i am being stupid.

People can pledge donations to my ‘SKYDIVE FOR STILIYAN’ by emailing me at Morrisseythe23rd@aol.com We can arrange payment later.

It will be easier and probably suit most people best once BT MyDonate and I resolve the issue of setting up a link that people can donate to directly on-line. They are working on it right now.

BTW Those who did the Ben Nevis Huddle have been invited for a round-of-applause at half-time during the Petrov game. I’ll be wearing my KanoFoundation scarf.

Hope your happy with your move. Are you looking forward to playing in the Champions League when you turn on your Playstation?

  20. I seem to remember Tony Stokes scoring two(could be wrong) in one of the Europa league games a couple of seasons back Rennes maybe ????

I think we won 3-1 at home but no doubt I had sipped a few apple juices before the game.

  21. Stokes, Hooper and Commons. Within 10 yards of each other, playing quick first time passes. They were good. Not quite Barca, but good.

Don’t know where we got off on have Stokes go wide and then have him and Hooper trying to link up while 25 yards apart.

  22. Kevin Doyle Yes or No?.

I say yes and not just cos he is a Tim and hails from Wexford. However the fact that he knows the “Celtic Thing” will mean there should be little settling in problems and he will hit the ground running. Also if he does come I’d expect it to be a 1 yr loan so it would be low risk. Prior to Wolves move he had a flourishing Club & International career. We all know it went badly wrong for him at Wolves and if you were to judge him solely on his Wolves form then obviously you wouldn’t want him. I know he is a far better player then that, if he comes, he knows its last chance saloon, he will bust a gut for us, remember where you read it first. KevinDoyleforCelticcsc.

Yes, you are right about my statement as regards the away kit. I suppose as far as it is concerned, I suppose I should have substituted the word “simple” instead of “traditional”. A simple all green with white trim, or all white kit with green trim would be my preference. I also think that would be the preference of most fans if Celtic ever bothered to ask us.

Totally in agreement with you about the Hoops. The new home jersey just doesn’t look right. I actually really liked last years top where the Tennants logo was minimised. That will be my jersey of choice for the next season I think.

    Thanks, EC;

You gave me one of the best memories in years with your mention of legendary horse trainer, Peter Poston.

Peter was based at Newmarket but mostly ran his horses on the Scottish circuit.

You might think that that is a long way to travel with what were mostly selling class no-hopers.

    But Peter was not daft.

There was a travelling allowance based on mileage introduced in those days to encourage trainers to go further afield.

Wily old PJ Poston figured that loading 6 of his fine athletes onto a horse box, heading North & running them each 2 or 3 times in the course of a week, without returning home between races, could provide him with an income that he would not get running them for the prize money locally.

He bought only cheap horses, most of which had more problems than Sevco.

Anything around the £100-£150 mark was likely to end up with Peter.

When asked why he didn’t normally buy horses under £100, his answer was that he did not want to compromise his standards or ‘sacrifice quality’.

There are no Peter Postons in the modern racing world.

    Pity.
